Rev. North,
I have read many of the threads you have been on. You have not offended me at all. What christian denomination do you belong to?

I’m Catholic now Praise God!!! I was a 42 year member of the Church of God although throughout my young adult years I went back and forth from Chruch of God to AOG. I visited a Methodist Church for about 3 months…Then was lead to the Catholic Church.

Rev. North,

Rev. North, you have not been uncharitable or offensive to me. If you felt that you were, I accept your apology. Please stay here on the fora. I enjoy your posts. 🙂

It’s not that difficult. In most things, Protestants believe pretty much the same things. We also understand where we differ in our beliefs. In the end we are neither as divided as you think we are nor as united on the essentials as we profess.
If you say so: facts prove otherwise.

However, any number of sects raises fatal doubt in a rational mind: that’s the problem; either God invented this Protestant lottery of belief, with the odds against us, or He did not.

I especially doubt that you understand the differences between you: too many sects, too many differences.

Why you should care is another question, but without doubt Protestants have their briefs in a bunch about one and another and of course against the one true church they broke off from once and for all some 1500 years after Christ ascended into heaven.

God bless you to know the fullness of truth which subsists in His church, the RCC.

There might be a million and one sects…or there might not be. The vast majority of Protestants are grouped in less than 20-30 denominational families, however, so it’s not that hard to get a basic grip on things. If you want to say that even 20-30 is too much I’d agree with you, but that’s another question.

A while back, Singinbeauty made the comment “Why should she grow up? Christ said to come to Him as children.”

Yes, but I Corinthians 13, probably the most well-read of all the Scriptures except for Psalm 23, says that “When I became a man, I put away childish things.”

I think one of the reasons non-Catholic Christians are here is that many of the non-Catholic Christian sites ban either Catholics or discussion of Catholic topics. So in order to get a good discussion about their questions, non-Catholic Christians come here.

I was a member of the Campus Crusade for Christ forum for many years, since 2000 (before I became a Catholic). Last year, mainly because more and more Catholic threads were opening up (most of the Bible and Theology section was Catholic topics!), they established a “rule” that theology discussion is limited to the Bible only. No discussion of any denominational issues is allowed.

I no longer participate in the forum, but I still lurk. Last week, a member who apparently hadn’t read the rules started the topic, "Is the Catholic Church really the “True Church.” I reported it, and within an hour, the topic had been deleted.

If I hadn’t reported it, more and more non-Catholics would have posted vile untruths about the Catholic Church; only a few Catholic posters remain on that Board and I’m proud to say that they stuck by the rules last week and tried to avoid discussion of “denominational” issues, using only the Bible to defend our Church. But the non-Catholics were posting all kinds of lies about the Catholic Church, which is the main reason I asked the moderators to please stick to their own rules and delete the thread, OR to please allow Catholics to respond and defend themselves. Kind of like Esther pleading for her people, right?!

Anyway, CAF is a good place for dialogue! Things may get hot once in a while, but at least topics can be discussed.

Two is too many. To echo a great mind, God does not play dice with his Church. And the days–if there ever were such–of peaceful coexistence on the village green are gone. This is off topic, which is my fault. God bless.

Do you have any references to back this up or did you just pull the “20-30” number out of thin air?

I looked into this before, don’t have any sources on me this moment. I’ll have to go back and take a look at some of my old posts here…Take a look at where most of the Protestants are located…in the Baptist Churches, the Methodist Churches, the Lutheran Churches, Assembly of God Churches, etc. I’m not saying that there aren’t many sects with two or three people in each, I’m saying that the vast majority of Protestants worship within a small number of Church families.

Without a unified belief they can’t be called the same denomination. So if a group of Baptists differ on OSAS or the necessity of Baptism they all can’t fall under one denomination. They can call themsevles one denomination, but in reality they differ significantly on very important doctrinal issues making them seperate and distinct denominations. In protestantism the local Pastor is basically the Pope, the elders the Bishops, and the Church is typically its own denomination altogether.

Ok, I need to clear something up on this one… I can’t believe you took this seriously! I told him and one other person to get off their high horse, he told me to grow up. It was just a response. But I would like to add that even though it says in that verse that he ‘put away childish’ things does not say that he ‘grew up’. I bet we ALL know people who technically are adults because of age but they sure don’t act like them. By our human standards we grow up but I think that there is good reason that Christ told us to come to Him as children. It’s because of the innocent Faith factor. Children don’t pay attention to rules and regulations and such the way adults seem to argue over. We bring too much human’ness into it while children follow their hearts. 🤷

Anyways, didn’t mean to offend you Cat…

The Mormons believe in Christ would you consider your beliefs unified with thiers? Heck even Muslims accept Christ as a prophet and the Jewish Messiah and that Jesus will judge the world at the end of time. I certainly don’t consider my beleifs unified with thiers.

But Mormons AREN’T christians. Their beliefs system is out of whack with what the bible states. I also tire of being lumped in with them as ‘protestants’… I AM A CHRISTIAN and I am so tired of those in the catholic church saying I am anything but and lumping me in with those who aren’t…

Says who? They believe Jesus is God’s only begotten Son, they believe he’s their savior. mormon’s believe themselves Christians whether you do or not. They are really just another protestant sect. They started in the burnt over district of Western New York during the tide of nativism and anti-Catholic bigotry. Notice all these denominations of that time have one thing in common. They all attack the Catholic Church. Mormonism, SDA, Jehovah Witness etc…

Anyway obviously just believing in Christ is not enough to unify us, since pelenty of folks believe in Christ and despise Catholics. How could I be unified with those that hate me? I’ve read the Bible cover to cover and frankly without Apostolic tradition of the historical Catholic Church you guys wouldn’t even have a religion.

No way does a reader independently come up with the Trinity just by reading the Bible, absolutely no way. Give the Bible to 1,000 people with zero knowledge of Christianity, have them start at Genesis and end at Revelation. I would guarantee that not only would you not get anything resembling Christianity, but you would get 1,000 completely different religions. Some would be stoning sons for backsassing their Father. Some would be offering their daughters as a burnt offering like in Judges. It would be anarchy, kind of like what we see in modern day protestantism.

Mormons and JW’s are not Christians because they do not believe in the Trinity. If a Mormon or JW wishes to convert to Catholic, he must be baptized in the Catholic Church. Protestants use a Trinitarian baptism. If one is Baptist, Methodist, Lutheran, etc., he will not be rebaptized upon joining the Catholic Church.

…wot was the question…

aaaahhhhhhhhh so

de Rev North APOLOGISED

makes me think most highly of you sir
…now shall I pass you the holy hand grenade ( I grew up spewing great gouts of monty python)

I know all of that, but a Mormon or a Jehovah Witness will not agree with you, that’s the point. Who came up with the teaching of the Trinity? Why would that even be a pre-requisite amongsts Protestants? It isn’t explicitly taught in the Bible, so why would non belief in the Trinity revoke the Mormons right as a Christian? According to protestantism all you have to do is call on the name of Christ repent and be saved. I do believe Mormons do accept Jesus Christ as their savior. They only differ from other protestants on the belief in the Trinity and extra Biblical sources for belief.

You have a very narrow view of Protestantism. Not all Protestants believe in OSAS, not all have altar calls, etc. Accepting Christ as one’s saviour does not make one a Protestant.

I don’t think all protestants believe in OSAS (that’s my point), they are all so divided they really have no right to call a group "non-Christians based on differing beliefs. How can a Protestant discount Mormons as Christians over their belief (or lack thereof) in the Trinity? The Trinity is not explicitly taught in the Bible, so how could a protestant call a Mormon a non-Christian?
