When cash becomes king, all other values become secondary and eventually ridiculed. Being a good mother is harder than most of the jobs out there. I’ll bow out now before the usual arguments pop up regarding this topic.

I fail to understand why this war over words wages on.

Of course, I also think it’s ridiculous to say that being a mom (and yes, I am a mom of a wonderful 10 yr old and wish God would bless us with more) is a “job” or a “profession”. Being a mom is just another role in life - like being a daughter, a wife, a friend, a Christian. All of those require many of the same things being a mom does - compassion, understanding, being available to someone in times of need, etc. Nobody says that being a wife is their “job” (and there are some stay at home wives, no children, don’t work), that being a friend is their job, etc. Why does being a mom have to be labeled a job or profession?

As a wife, do you not take care of your spouse? Do you not help nurse your spouse when he is ill (which you also do when you are a mom for your child)? Do you not lend a shoulder to cry on when times are rough?

I am “just” a mother. I am also “just” a wife, a daughter, a friend, a Christian woman, an aunt, a daughter-in-law, etc. Not one of those roles do I consider to be a job. I consider them to be roles in life that God has blessed me with.

And because I know, inevitably, somehow the whole stay at home vs. working mom thing will come up, I am neither of those exclusively. I am both and have been both. I have stayed at home, and no, didn’t consider it a job/profession then. I work now, and the job I go to where I earn my paycheck is my job - being a mom - that’s a blessing.

Oh - and the end of that article, with the comment of “If you are a full-time mother…” - what the heck is that? How are you a part-time mother? When I am asleep, I’m still a mother. When I am at work, I am still a mother. When I am out with girlfriends, I’m still a mother. Every mother, regardless of where she is and where her child is, is a full-time mother.

“The most important person on earth is a mother. She cannot claim the honor of having built Notre Dame Cathedral. She need not. She has built something more magnificent than any cathedral–a dwelling for an immortal soul, the tiny perfection of her baby’s body . . . The angels have not been blessed with such a grace. They cannot share in God’s creative miracle to bring new saints to Heaven. Only a human mother can. Mothers are closer to God the Creator than any other creature; God joins forces with mothers in performing this act of creation . . . What on God’s good earth is more glorious than this; to be a mother?”

–Joszef Cardinal Mindszenty

Here is the job description.

Mother: Created in the image of God to generate new life and nurture it so that more souls will be with God in heaven. She is demanding of her young and obedient to her husband so that the child can learn from the mother what love is, or what God is. The husband will help them navigate the outside world by promoting discipline, hard work, and perseverance. The wife works with the husband to generate souls for Christ.

There is a lot more to write but I have to go.

OK, I am back. I have to add some more because this is a subject I am very interested in.

Job Description: Woman/Mother
A mother recognizes her role by the design of her body and that this design is from God. She is tempted to reject this design and use chemical and surgical means to subvert the design of God, especially in today’s world, but she holds fast. Each time she overcomes this temptation, a chorus of angels in heaven and saints with them, erupt in cheers and jubilation.

The mother is tempted in other ways. This was from the beginning as written in Genesis. Today’s woman will require strong help to persevere and not succumb to today’s temptations. She will need a strong man that is dedicated to her and growing in holiness. She will need a man that will shield her from the temptations. The man will be unpleasant and rather primitive at times but she will remain focused on his purpose in God’s plan. In the end, the woman will grow with the man to turn away from “my plan” and move toward “God’s plan.”

As the woman grows in holiness, she will recognize how her sisters in gender have rejected God’s plan and how this decision has made them increasingly miserable with time. She will attempt to help her sisters and some of these lost sisters will be saved. These lost sisters will see the inner joy of the good woman and be attracted to her.

There is more to offer but that is all I can write for now. I hope it helps.

Very true. One of the most unfortunate side effects of the women’s liberation movement was that many women began to tie their self-worth to their employment (much like many men do). I used to have a lot of trouble with this myself until I realized that my job is just whatever allows me to provide for my family.

I am employed as an electrician, but I could do something else to pay the bills. I am a husband and father and always will be. The term “job” really becomes unimportant.

Well for me- my career is also my vocation in a way. As a therapist I help folks improve their lives and I do find fullfilment in it. It’s far from just a way to provide, along with my wife, for my family.

My wife happens to make much more money than I do, but we both love what we do, and that’s what is important. Money is base- happiness is what is important.
