 Right after the story of Christmas, the birth of Christ, a time of life and rejoicing

for Christians, is a story of darkness and death in the Gospel. Herod, the king of Israel, learning the

Messiah, the king of the Jews, had just been born in Bethlehem, out of fear of a rival for power, ordered every

infant boy under 2 years old in Bethlehem and the immediate area killed.

 These infants are remembered by the Church as Holy Innocents, because they are

venerated as martyrs, and now rejoice with Jesus in heaven.
