Hi,It is a logical restatement of the ‘priesthood of all believers’ viewpoint.
Well, actually not really.
Priesthood of all believers means that we are all priests and that therefore no specific priest hood is required.
I think the main difference between evangelicalism and Catholicism is that we have an entirely different preception of to whom the speeches to Jesus are (like John 21:15-17, or Luke 10:16)
We, the evangelicals, believe that this refers to ALL believers. The Catholics i.e. believe that this refers ONLY to the apostles who were the first priests.
I think in this manner the “priesthood for all believers” came into being.
I don’t like speaking for the Catholics (as my knowledge about Catholic Doctrine is rather poor) but I think that the priesthood IS required there. - For all 7 sacraments. No sir. Either it is required, or it is not. This isn’t a grey area or a false dichotomy. If there is, at any time, a situation in which the priesthood is NOT required for something that is ordinarily reserved to the priesthood, then it’s—not required.
Seems simple enough to me, anyway.
The thing of the emergancy baptism is to be understood from the point of view that baptism is absolutely necessary for salvation.
By the way: we are JUST talking about real emergancy cases (which are thank god not that often!)
