An Icon of Hell?

Is this considered an Icon proper? The reference is to a Georgian Monastery and it refers to the work as an Icon. But in the picture not a single saint or holy entity is shown. This is neither a “Window into Heaven” or a depiction of transfigured life. The only scenes of hell I have seen are depicted with salvific contrasts in the Resurrection of the Divine Ladder.

What is this?

That is very interesting. I’ve never seen an icon that looks like that at all. I wonder if we’re missing some of the icon since the picture seems to cut off part of the top, so maybe there is something up there that helps draw it all together. What seems interesting to me is that the figures of the males in the picture seem to be in an iconographic style, but the figures of the demons don’t seem that way. However, if you look at the other icons you posted all the figures maintain the same styling.

I hope somebody else can add more to this.
