An idea for a chapel

I think that because of the decline in reverence and tradition we need more sacred space, we need to be around and in sacred space to nurture ourselves as Catholic people. The presence of God is stronger sometimes in a place it is used exclusively.
One day, I would like to build a chapel. My family built a shed a while ago for under 500$ and it was as sturdy as St Peter’s. It was a basic garden shed, about 13/13 feet or some more. it was a very solid and handsome shed (as far as sheds go).
I was thinking, maybe i could one day do something like this. A sturdy shed structure. modify it taking away the swing-open barn doors and add some stained glass windows. i would even build a fleche (wooden spire) for the top. the chapel would be built upon a foundation of the rich tradition of Holy Mother Church, as well as strong good old fashioned American concrete or stone :).
I would also cover the inside so that the frame beams wouldn’t be sticking out. i would use my god given gifts of artwork and my hopefully inherited gene for church restoration 😃 to good use in the edification of this noble shrine. I would dedicate it to our lady of Fatima or Guadalupe or Saint John Neumann.
Any other suggestions or thoughts?
 
Perhaps offer your services to the diocese to work on repairs or construction in local parishes. My parish renovated a storage room into a beautiful adoration chapel. There was important work done to create a ‘foyer’ so that sound and drafts would disturb the admirers when people came in and out. We also needed to make the entrance safe for our more elderly members who needed a handrail on the step etc. Not perhaps the artistic work you dream of, but necessary to give the parish a place for consistent adoration.
 
this is a good idea, and I will be sure to do this. but i want to build a place unique in it’s catholicism, and a house of prayer for the people in the neighborhood. I’d hope to use it to lead people back to the church and to increase everyone’s faith
 
I’ve seen similarly sized chapels built as shrines, attached to churches or other Catholic organizations. Why not reach out to a local Catholic corporation, woman’s shelter, or school to see if they would be interested? I’ve also see Adoration Chapels at about that size.
 
I think it’s a great idea. At some point you might even get a priest to come out and say a Mass there, invite the Catholic neighbors or people from church.
 
Kyrie1, I think that this is a wonderful idea. I think that you ought to speak to your priest about your plans to make certain that this would be able to be a chapel to celebrate Mass (not just a prayer shrine). I know that there are rules about this sort of thing and it would good to cross all your t’s. 🙂
 
Kind of like the Portiuncula. Its been surrounded by a much larger church now, but hey, you’ve gotta start somewhere.



In the mean time, please build confessionals and alter rails… so many parishes need them!

And no kneelers. Let them kneel on the stone floor! And issue hairshirts to all who visit. This is really beginning to gel! 😃

I love your ideas. Our Lord is speaking to you to use your gifts to help out in parishes and to honor Him?
 
A number of traditional minded Catholics have built home altars that are used in similar fashion as Eastern Christians use icon corners. Of course, if properly constructed and blessed, I suppose Mass could be said there as well, which would be a nice benefit if you have a priest handy. As for me, I don’t, I doubt it would ever happen. More than likely, I would do the icon corner, but that position may change at some point.
