I listen to college music stations a lot while I’m driving the thousands of miles I drive each month.

…Because I’m cool and hip-to-the-scene like that.

…And I probably just dated myself.

This song, “Rude” by MAGIC! is getting a lot of airplay on these stations.

I find it disturbing on many levels.

It seems to really show the culture divide in the United States clearly, and a perspective that splits families.

I’ve been mulling over the song, the situation in our country, and the divide between young people and traditional family values for a week.

The comments on this video are also interesting, including some heated debates.

I found the video ridiculous. It starts with the man waking up with the girl in his bed. Men who really respect their women do not ask for premarital sex. It is dumb to ask a man if you can marry his daughter after sleeping with her. This guy is pretending to be a nice guy when he is not.

I also find it ridiculous that a father would set his daughter up with a ‘nice guy’. My dad was always of the mentality ‘I will never tell my daughter who to marry, since she gets to choose who she shares a bed with’. What kind of father forces his daughter to a life of sex with someone she doesn’t want?’

I think the whole video was just designed with a marketing mentality to get a lot of attention and everyone behind it knows how pathetic it is. Not to mention the way the guy dances is so pathetic. Sad that people admire that

It is sad people would take that as a reflection of real life

I don’t get the point. I asked my father in law, but it was a formality, he didn’t really have any say in the matter.

I’m glad you haven’t had experiences that would allow you to relate to anything in this video.

There is more than marketing at work here.

I’d go into my musings but I’m really interested in what other people have to say.

I didn’t watch the video. I simply read the lyrics.

There wasn’t any mention of him in bed with her. Just that he jumped out of bed. And there was no setting up the daughter. All of that was just an add on to the video.

Yes, asking for permission to marry is old fashioned. My husband didn’t do it. My father didn’t do it.

It was something that was done back when the daughter moved out of her parent’s home into her husband’s. Most times, now, the daughter is out living on her own. Chances are, she is working or educated enough to work. So permission to marry seems superfluous.

It also seems to relate to the father or parents “giving the bride away.” That isn’t done in a Catholic ceremony. The bride must come of her own free will.

I do think that young people would be better off if they did consult their parents about a possible marriage. My cousins, who are Jehovah Witnesses, always had (name removed by moderator)ut from parents on both ends and where chaperoned. No premarital sex there, or babies born out of wed lock either.

I don’t meant to say marriages should be prearranged or anything like that. However, if I was a young girl today, (no so anymore) I would ask my father what he thought of a potential husband. Also, I would never go with someone without my family meeting them first. Just this simple rule could save a lot of young people a lot of trouble. Having to meet family can be just enough to ward off jerks. Not always, but it does help.

I am for a lot of old fashioned ways. But then I am old fashioned and old.

umm… I honestly just like it for the music. It makes me feel like Im on an island or something they would play in the movie 50 First Dates. >_<

(name removed by moderator)ut is one thing. Permission is another.

My parents loved my husband. They thought he was just a little bit better than wonderful. But he didn’t speak to them before he asked me. His thought? It was me that needed to say yes. Not them. (Oh, and no babies out of wedlock.)

Now, my mother’s family wasn’t too fond of my father. But they didn’t like anyone. And my parents eloped. But there were married for 47 years. So something worked out. (Oh, and no babies out of wedlock, there, either.)

So, like I said, it seems the video added much more to the song. The song, in itself isn’t terrible. It is the video that adds the premarital sex and the Dad setting up his daughter with a potential husband.

Can you please explain what else is at work in the video. I honestly don’t get it

That sounds good in theory but not in practice. Lots of young men know how to turn on the charm in front of their father in laws. Not to mention, who is to say a man really knows what is best for his daughter? He hasn’t walked in her shoes

I don’t really get why it is disturbing? It’s just a bit of silliness to a catchy tune from what I could see. If a long haired, whiney garage musician turned up to our house with a car load of grimey friends asking for our daughters hand, I wouldn’t be taking him too seriously. I’d certainly be discussing with my daughter whether she has thought through the long term prospects with him though.

All-right,

Maybe I’m over-thinking this rather silly song. I do that.

I’m looking at it this way:

First, there’s a conflict of ethical bases here.

Here are two young people in infatuation, or “puppy love,” or whatever.
Which is a God-given seed that leads to greater and greater love through matrimony.

Puppy love is not enough in today’s society to withstand money problems, problems with children, health, lusts, addictions, etc.
And then the marriage is no more.

The singer states “we’ll be a family” when he is splitting the extended family which instead of being a support through rough times will look at the couple as a disappointment. This is a redefinition of family. What is this, a family of two?

From Rerum Novarum, an encyclical by Pope Leo XIII - still relevant today or Pope John Paul would probably not have felt compelled to write Centesimus annus:
Paternal authority can be neither abolished nor absorbed by the State; for it has the same source as human life itself. “The child belongs to the father,” [quoting Saint Thomas Aquinas in *Summa
] and is, as it were, the continuation of the father’s personality; and speaking strictly, the child takes its place in civil society, not of its own right, but in its quality as member of the family in which it is born.

In today’s society permission is no longer required, I’m not sure it’s necessary (at least in our culture) - But I asked for permission before I married my wife of twenty-seven years and her father was not opposed to the marriage. - And if he had been I might have reacted in a similar manner to what this young man describes when I was young, stupid, and in puppy love - but I would have been wrong to do so and I doubt we would still be together today had I done this. At least without extraordinary special dispensation of mercy and grace because both our families supported us (more than just finances) through tough times.

There’s the “old school” idea a man should ask for permission - at least blessing or at a minimum approval - before marrying a daughter. There is reason for this. I am guessing the (maybe fictional) father in this song might have seen through this young man, and seen he would be someone who would “marry her anyway.” Blessing and permission are a hot topic in the comments.

In the “old way” of doing things, a Father might have placed conditions on the marriage, for example: “Put your music job second, get a real daytime job using that degree you just earned to help pay off the student loans you just incurred while you and my daughter were off at college falling in love with each other. Oh yeah, and go to RCIA. Then we’ll talk.”

So, with the deep puppy love this young man has, the most he is willing to do before giving up and doing what he wants anyway is get in a suit once and ask for permission (for which no is an answer he won’t take?)

And the young man takes the moral high ground here. It’s the father who’s rude here? Really?

…And this song is intended to be romantic for it’s young audience, who may not be able to see its true message.

…And the tune is really catchy. I mean, musically it’s a great song and I love the music.

To be honest I pretty much just listen to country music so this is the first time I have been exposed to this song and frankly I found it catchy. Is it the song you have a problem with or the video? I just went thru the video twice and then listened to the song a third time while going thru the lyrics.

I get where you say that there is a culture divide between old and young people but I honestly think you’re just looking into it way too much. All I saw in that video was a well to do family who expected her daughter to be a certain type of person but was dating a guy that he did not approve of and didn’t think was good for her. The young man decides that he will do what the traditional thing is to appease his hopeful future father-in-law and ask for his daughter’s hand in marriage and when when he said no, he was pretty much like tough love, I was only doing this to be traditional for your sake, I’m still gonna marry her. I think this is the attitude a lot of people have when they ask a man for his daughter’s hand in marriage.

The father tries to set his daughter up with a man that he feels would be better for her but she isn’t interested as you can see from her texting her boyfriend and she goes off and marries him without her father’s permission since he will never accept him as a son-in-law.

I know when I propose to my girlfriend I will first ask for her father’s permission for her hand in marriage and if he says yes then awesome, but if he says no I will still propose. The only thing in this video is a father disapproving of her boyfriend, that is it. I do not see how this poses a cultural divide, it is only one fictional situation, it’s not exactly like this is the norm in terms of what fathers in one generation all are and what all boys in the next generation are like. Besides, it’s pop music. Go listen to some country and watch their videos and you’ll see younger people working hard next to older people and men respecting women and trying to raise their kids right.

To answer your first question, I have problems with the lyrics. I just chose the “official video” to link to.

But when you say:
I know when I propose to my girlfriend I will first ask for her father’s permission for her hand in marriage and if he says yes then awesome, but if he says no I will still propose. .
Now I know I am not overthinking this. The quotes from Leo XIII and St Thomas Aquinas have no relevence? This is truly a new Catholic Church.

Pope Francis frequently states young people get bored with stuff like boring teachings of the Church Fathers and Popular Piety is important to keep the Church alive. And I see this is true in a way I have not before.

Yes, you are overthinking it. What makes a marriage last is trusting God. I find it sad that you are insinuating that people who don’t have their parents support can not make a marriage last.

What about all the people from divorced families whose own parents could make their marriage last? What about children of alcoholics and children of abusive families who lost custody? Are you saying that all these people are destined to divorce? Can God not help them make their marriage last?

And the Catholic church has always taught marriage is a free choice to give your life to your spouse. No where in the teachings does it state ‘Men shall choose their daughters husband’

Angie

This is a powerful statement.

Maybe I am wrong.

You are discussing CoCC 1625?

What does “Free to contract marriage” mean in the light of the teachings of Aquinas and Leo XIII mean then? “Free to contract marriage” because a couple wants want to get married, no matter what?

I mean, how do you interperet CoCC 1632?

Wow… I’m really getting scared.

…And to Jerbear … specifically …

When it comes the time, PM me or reply to this thread 24 or more hours prior.

I promise you I will pray for a “yes” response from Dad.
(Or a “yes” with reservations, which you MUST perform…)
I’d love to see another strong Christian marriage, and I am sure yours will be one.

Really, I said the truth when I admitted I might have done the same thing you are considering when I was asking for my wife’s hand.

“Dad” will know. Us older dudes are spooky like that. And I’m sure he wants his daughter to have a happy life. If she is not Catholic, it’s a must do.

I hope the best for you two… really I do… that’s why I have to promise the prayer. I’m always having to confess I don’t pray morning and evening. I mean, I get inspired and I do for a while and stuff gets in the way, and then I’m stuck confessing the same stuff (like not praying as regularly as I should) I do every confession.

If I promised you I’ll feel I have no choice.

I was just stating what I have learnt by being around Catholics. I don’t know the exact source nor can I answer what ‘Free to contract marriage means’.

But it is just a logical conclusion when one believes God is love, it equates God wants people happy in their marriage. No one can choose a spouse for someone else

Thank you. This conversation has been really enlightening.

BTW: “No one can choose a spouse for someone else” is actually what CoCC 1625 states. Or more specifically: “No one can force the choice of a spouse for someone else.”

Awesome. It means I am learning good stuff through my studies and work 🙂
