We’ve been practicing NFP for several regularly take my oral temp at 5 am every morning as it is when I have to take some thyroid medication. Yesterday morning though I took it at 6 instead because I am battling the flu and just overslept. Something I rarely (very rarely do). I cannot find our NFP book. What is the rule of thumb on temp. adjustment an hour after regular time? Thanks.

Normally, we teach to mark days where the temperature was taken late as disturbed temperatures, and thus they are ignored.

The theory discussed in our teaching materials is that the normal woman’s temp rises 1/10 of 1 degree every half-hour. So if you take it one hour late, it should be elevated around 2/10. However, since YMMV, I would recommend you ignore the temp if it is around the date of your ovulation.

Hope this helps,
Have a Great Day

Thank you! It was actually a couple days I goofed on this. And I have wierd cycles. They are not always the same length. I don’t knowhere that book is. I may have to break down and get another one. (sigh)

An hour probably won’t hurt much. It could be a tenth or two off, so don’t base a thermal shift on todays temp. But, the flu will affect your temperature’s accuracy. Even a low grade fever can cause the temperatures to be off too much. It might look like a shift, when it’s really just the illness. When sick, you must rely heavily on other signs, such as mucous and cervical position. A warning that even mucous sign can be off when sick. You might have more mucous days than normal, due to increase in mucous productivity when sick. Also, since you’ve been charting quite some time, I’d rely on them for cross reference, if you are at all regular. If you have a very serious reason to postpone children at this time, you may wish to consider complete abstinence for the remainder of this cycle, due to your illness. If you know of someone very well trained in NFP, they might be able to help you further, and shorten your abstinence period to its minimum considering the circumstances. Hope that helps.

Thank you. We did prety mch abstain for the rest of the cycle. But I was so uncertain of what to do if that should ever happen again. Unfortunately, my temp is he most reliable of the signs.
