An odd thing happened after Mass today

After Mass today I went to pray in front of the Blessed Sacrament. The tabernacle shows the last supper. As I entered the chapel I noticed an elderly (hispanic looking) man go up to the tabernacle and kiss Judas (I’m pretty sure it was Judas since he was a holding a small bag). Does anyone know the meaning of this? Is this something that happens in the hispanic community? :confused:

Are you sure he wasn’t just kissing the Tabernacle? I am still unfamiliar with this practice, but it makes more sense than kissing Judas.🤷
 
I was thinking the same thing, but it looked intentional since Judas isn’t near the centre.
 
yes kissing the tabernacle is a pious custom here especially among older Hispanics or those more recently from Mexico, I assume he was not looking at the art per se, just kissing the tabernacle
 
I guess you could always get vicarious revenge by betraying Judas with a kiss… Heh.

But yeah, the guy’s probably just kissing the tabernacle. He might be too shy or too short to kiss it in the middle.

i know i, for one, if i go to kiss a relic or etc am not thinking about which specific spot i am touching or kisssing. i espect if i kissed the tabernacle i would just kiss whatever part i hapened to be close to…
also you said elderly? i would also wonder how good his vision is
 
Chances are good he wasn’t specifically kissing Judas.

Or maybe he was thinking “now where is the least likely place on this scene to have not been touched by hundreds of other people’s lips? oh yeah, Judas!” 😃
 
Maybe he is praying for priests including those who have betrayed their vocation.

Maybe he has a family member or close friend that has died and he is praying for those who commit suicide or have died without returning to the church.

Who knows.
 
OK, so I suppose he was just kissing the tabernacle then :). I did like some of the answers though! 😃
 
I also would expect that he was just kissing the tabernacle, not necessarily noticing (or caring) what part of the image on it he was near. I know I don’t generally pay attention to what part I am by when I kiss the tabernacle.

I didn’t know about the Hispanic tradition of kissing the Tabernacle.
Generally, the Tabernacle is located in the sanctuary, which is not supposed to be accessible to the laity, except to those who are serving.
