An outstanding homily about tradition from Bishop Sample - Marquette, MI

This homily is from the solemn high pontifical Mass yesterday, at Assumption Grotto parish in Detroit. This was the closing Mass to the Call to Holiness Conference held over the weekend. The audio is not fantastic, but it was recorded by Fr. Z as he sat in choir, so you get what you can get sometimes.

(Please note - the activity you see behind the Bishop is mostly happening in the sacristry, and out of view of the people, though it appears there is a lot of traipsing around, that is not the case, and I hardly noticed any movement at all from where I sat in the pews.)

Homily

The entire weekend was fantastic - but this Mass, and the Bishop’s homily, were really the highlight.

I took the kids to that Mass.

It was simply INCREDIBLE!!

I know that Lizaanne knows this, but the pastor of that parish ( Fr. Perrone of Assumption Grotto) is a very skill classical musician and composer.

He composed his own orchestral Mass setting for the Tridentine Mass, and that was the Mass setting that was used at yesterday’s Mass.

Substantial elements from the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, along with members of the DSO choir, were on hand to perform the music.

Words cannot describe the beauty and majesty of it all.

I was also at the Call to Holiness conference, and Bishop Sample gave the keynote address. Again it was incredible.

Fr. Z gave the dinner address and, we he is just awesome 👍

Before Bishop Sample was made Bishop, I had the honor of having him as my confessor. I started with him when I was 8, and continued with him until I left Marquette Michigan at 23. He is a good, honest, and holy man. I have no doubt that he is called to so very much in our Lord’s name.

Thank you for the picture, if I lived closer and the weather was better, I would’ve loved to have attended the Mass. Looking forward to more pictures.

Bishop Samples homily was excellent.
 
I just listened to the homily… That was awesome! I wish we had more bishops like him
 
Wow…excellent homily. I wish I could have been there. The bishop mentioned that the the EF connects us with our past. I think that this is important, because we have a 2000 year old Church, and its good to be reminded of it through the EF.

Yes.

I related to the New Evangelization being associated as engaging in a battle. A struggle with fronts such as: Catechesis, Charity and the Sacred Liturgy. The front being waged through renewal and reform of the Sacred Liturgy is always ongoing in the Church.

I appreciated his sharing how he first discovered the extraordinary form of the Sacred Liturgy in College. How and why he was attracted to it. And how this discovery also saddened him – at what appeared to be lost. Though he balanced that with his optimism of renewal and how this can lead to a growing sense of reverence.

My family is blessed to be involved in a parish that has offered the Mass of the 1962 Missal (for a few years). Sadly, our pastor died suddenly yet our new pastor has promised to continue this. The EF is limited to certain Sundays and every Saturday morning yet I found it really has had a positive impact on some parishioners. I was impressed that he took some extra time and learned the rite of Baptism in the EF at the request of a family in the parish. We are fortunate!
