When the prayers were offered up today at Mass, I almost choked when the Priest read…

“For the narrow mindedness of the Catholic Church we pray to the Lord”

I Immediately thought of the scripture, “The path is narrow and the road is difficult, and few are those who find it!”

So I prayed for the Lord to protect and maintain the narrow way. I’m sure that’s not what the person who submitted the prayer intended, but it is also a Mass that I hear a number of voices say God instead of using the masculine…“His or Him”. Please lord keep the Catholic Church narrow minded.

Write a letter to the Bishop. Let him get clarification. I pray that the intent wasn’t as you may think and was about the narrow path the Church guides us through.

First, speak to your Pastor.

There is a good chance than these were typed up by someone else and he never saw them before Mass.

Yikes.

Our pastor, a few weeks after arriving at our parish made the following announcement prior to the prayers of the faithful:

“If you have prayer intentions which are not in line with Catholic teaching, please feel free to quietly mention them OUTSIDE.”

👍

I’m quite sure it was not the narrow path, but the narrow mindedness of the Church. I had the opportunity to pray against it and did.

There have been a few strange intentions - not as bad as slurs on the Church - that haven’t been caught by lay lectors before reading but so far I haven’t seen it happen to a priest. I have noticed some intentions being left out frequently, such as for the sick or those who have died. Those should be said even if there aren’t any parishioners being mentioned specifically. I used to be a lector and we were always required to read over the readings and intentions before Mass so we wouldn’t sound clumsy. If something inappropriate is inadvertently read, can the lector or priest apologize for it and correct it immediately or is that a no-no?

For the conversion of the priest who read the above intention:

Hail Mary,
Full of Grace,
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit
of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary,
Mother of God,
pray for us sinners now,
and at the hour of our death.
Amen
