In Argentina, as an archbishop, the Pope supported civil unions coming into law as a way of ensuring gay couples did not face discrimination in law and also as a way of lessening support for gay marriage. He referenced this in his interview. Not new, not outside standing Church policy. The Church tends to oppose civil unions because they are seen as a ‘step towards’ marriage for gays. When that battle is lost it retreats to supporting civil unions as a way of ‘protecting’ the institution of marriage.
If I as an unbelieving non-Catholic can understand this with a quick Google I’m completely befuddled as to why so many Catholics are confused.
The Catholic adoption agency referred to by the prior poster has one paragraph allowing for consideration of single mothers. It says nothing about single fathers or single men.
Glad to know that. My grandmother was a single parent after my grandfather died and left her with minor children to raise (including my father). For all practical matters, I am a single parent as well, my son hasn’t seen his mother for six months and she rarely even contacts him anymore.
