Ancient accusation: Jesus is the Devil?

A college man (who was once Christian) wearing a kippah, told my son that Jesus was the Devil. My son asked me how to approach such an accusation. We had a long discussion. I told him of similar accusations that Jesus responded to. We talked of Jesus life and sacrifice. We also talked about our all perfect God, who created and loves us and how we are imperfect … therefore we can not stand in God’s presence … without the only possible perfect sacrifice … Jesus (God) in payment for our sins and to purify our souls. Questions: Is the accusation of Jesus being the Devil common and if so, how would you approach it? Thank you.
 
Why would he tell your son that? The guy seems like a real donkey. I wouldn’t even try to argue against that accusation, it’s like arguing with someone telling the world is flat.
 
I agree. Its the same accusation that Jesus faced on earth. Jesus miracles must have dumbfounded some very proud people of his time. Could it be that such accusations have never died off? I’m curious how others would respond. (I’d like to sit in the background and listen to how my son handles it.)

I was just thinking … some of the most emotional oppositions that I’ve heard are from people that are asking questions … people that want to believe but don’t have answers. Perhaps that’s why he told my son that. (My son is extremely well grounded and highly respected for his beliefs. He’s also been an excellent Chief Editor for his college Newspaper. … so he’s a target.)
 
It makes more sense now that I know your child is college age, but still think it’s poor form to insult ones teligous beliefs, especially unprovoked. I too play devil’s advocate when trying to learn new things but I do not think that’s what this donkey is doing. I’m guessing though he isn’t atheist, because (I think) athesiasts don’t believe in the devil. Unless he is an atheist and just trying to belittle your son’s faith.
 
It’s the same old same old accusations. If anything, I’d challenge him to come up with something new. Surely, if this accuser is among the few enlightened ones, he’d be able to do that.

Yes accusations were made against Jesus when He spoke and performed miracles, there seemed to be a turn about when He was crucified and died on the cross.’ The veil of the sanctuary was torn in two, the earth quaked, rocks were split and tombs were open and the bodies of many Saints who had fallen asleep were raised’ The centurion and the men with him said ’ Truly this was the Son of God.’’ Jesus is not misunderstood in the hearts of thoe who know Him. Thank you. I love the entire chapter. I acquired a deeper understanding of verses 29-30. I’ve read it many times before … but this time I saw it differently. It came alive.
Jesus declared directly to and of those (scribes) who said that Jesus was possessed and that the miracles (of the Holy Spirit) were actually those of Beelzebul … could not be forgiven. Such accusations were blasphemies against the Holy Spirit. Wow. No forgiveness!?! That is scary.
I hope & pray and believe that Jesus was not speaking of those who “know not” of what they were saying or doing. Hell is a horrible existence.Again, thank you.

I don’t have time, but I would like to meet the man that talked with my son. Sometimes such people are hurt and looking for answers. But on rare occasions, I’ve looked into the eyes of some people and “felt” something wrong and evil … like pure hate. I can not describe it any other way. I want to know what type of person that man is. I can help wounded, but the kind of hatred I’m describing goes way beyond human healing. If you will, please pray.

Thank you. He did not claim to be atheist. My son said that he believe in one and only one God. With the Jewish headgear, I assume we was trying to claim some type of allegiance with the same Jews who had Jesus crucified. Interesting. I wonder how he went from Christianity to the position he is at now. How strange?
 
How funny! I love it. I’ve felt the same way several times. It’s like the passion of St. Peter and the Zeal of St. Paul. I can see those Saints riding mighty white steeds dressed in shining armor with weapons at the ready.

While gratifying … sometimes we reluctantly have to exchange the steel armor and weapons , for the greater armor of Christ and the weapons like the Holy Rosary … which demons fear and hate.

But I have to admit decking someone can feel soooo good. Now I’ve got to go to confession. 🙂
 
How to approach it?
Pray for this guy.
He has serious problems.

I remember this guy once told me - how he felt -
that Satan - was actually - the younger brother of Jesus.

I’m not sure he fully believed it -
But we kicked around the idea, without anger.

He was a Vietnam vet - a ‘sweeper’ type soldier.
I think he was a monk too, never ordained in. Black belt.
 
12:24. But the Pharisees hearing it, said: This man casteth not out devils but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils.

My response is Jesus’ response:

12:25. And Jesus knowing their thoughts, said to them: Every kingdom divided against itself shall be made desolate: and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand.

12:26. And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself: how then shall his kingdom stand?

12:27. And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out? Therefore they shall be your judges.

I am happy to pray for the misguided person who said this to your son. And for the protection of your son as well.
I would hope it is just a case of a person who is hurt or who perhaps has a mental illness that God will take into account.
People sometimes do not understand the impact of what they are saying and are just hurt like you said, or maybe just want to shock.
I would hope the person did not have the intention of spreading any evil, but as you observed, such people are out there.
I hope your son avoids them as they can do great harm.

I like your additional comments and believe prayer is needed for those souls who are lost.
 
Atheists don’t believe in any form of God, angel, demon or spirit, so believing the Devil exists would make him some form of theist. Even believing in a vaguely defined ‘supreme being’ would make him a deist and not an atheist.
