You are correct. Cardinal Ottaviani, as head of the Holy Office (Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith) wrote to the Pope warning him that the Novus Ordo would alienate eastern Christians. There is only a very superficial and artificial similiarity between the NO and the eastern liturgies. Patriarch Alexy II argued that a return of the TLM would actually help ecumenism, not hinder it, as the Orthodox have traditionally taken a very low view of the Novus Ordo. Their liturgy is immeasurably more beautiful than the Novus Ordo.

You can do an Ordinary Form and make it look almost exactly like the extraordinary form, nothing except the more “progressive” types prevents this.

The Ordinary Form of the Roman Rite (Pauline Mass) is not an ancient liturgy, like the Extra-Ordinary form is. The EF is based off of the Mass of Saint Pope Pius V. The Ordianary Form is modern day. A major change!. You need to know, that none of these ancient liturgies have altar girls, EMHCs, contemporary guitar music, and lots of options. They all have very strict rubrics to follow, unlike the modern day Ordinary Form of the Roman Rite. I would not even put it in the same category. And they all face East!
 
bkovacs–Minor point–but that icon you’re identifying as the Platytera is mislabelled.

The one you show is properly “Axion Estin/Dostojno Jest/It is truly meet”.

Platytera (aka Our Lady of the Sign) shows the unborn Divine Infant in a rondel on the torso of the Virgin.
 
I have always been attracted to the ancient forms of liturgy, I especially would like to be present for an Armenian liturgy. I saw the movie Ararat several years ago, and researched intensively the Armenian genocide. I would also like to be present at a Maronite liturgy. It was not too long ago since EWTN showed a Maronite liturgy.

If you click on the image it will show the larger photo and above this stylized version of the Platytera - written in Greek - the words Platytera ton oronon. I cannot speak for the OP, but I would imagine this is from where it came.

Yes, it doesn’t do well for unity considering the fact that a Pope, acting as head of the Universal Church, can and did, dismantle the entire Ancient Liturgy almost overnight. And the East is witnessing the results that ensued from the Pope’s approval of such a dismantling of the Liturgy in the West. Why would the East want to submit after seeing that?
 
This brings me to a question that I struggle with:
What made the Pope think it was a good idea to completely abandon the Ancient Liturgy and replace it with a completely new Liturgy?? Especially considering warnings from past Popes about doing just that.

And, btw, what was the hurry? Rome moves so slow on everything but the implementation of the new Mass seemed to happen quite fast. Why??
I am genuinely confused by all this. Anyone?
