Can an irish catholic join the Ancient Order of Hibernians?

Thanks

Educate us…is there anything about belonging to this organization that runs contrary to the Catholic faith?

From what I understand about their origins, the AOH was an organization that formed in Ireland by Catholics in response to Protestand persecution and that its original charter in the U.S. prohibited members from joining secret societies and/or from participating in anything which conflicted with Catholic teachings. See this link for more info: newadvent.org/cathen/07320a.htm.

Slewi,

The AOH is made up exclusively of practicing Catholics, Irish or of Irish descent. You (or anyone else) should feel free to contact me for further info. If you decide to join us, allow me to extend to you Cead Mile Failte! (100,000 Welcomes!)

As Jason noted, the organization is specifically for Catholics of Irish decent.

I’d recommend them wholeheartily.

Can someone tell me more about what this is my mother was almost full Irish and my grandfather was full Irish am I Irish enough.

There are only two qualifications: You must be Irish and Catholic (men). Irish Catholic women have the LAOH (Ladies Ancient Order Hibernians) to join.

I just started taking a “Conversational Gaelic (Irish)” class from the Hibernians.

I’m not sure of the history of the Hibernians but when I read “Trinity”, by Leon Uris, there were many many referrals to the Hibernians in his book.

Does anyone know the history?
