The American Bible Society and The Barna Group’s annual survey, which included interviews with more than 65,000 Americans over the past decade, has divulged that only Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Birmingham, Alabama, can boast that more than half of their residents report reading the Bible in a typical week, while strongly asserting that biblical principles are accurate.

Seeing Salt Lake City on the Top 10 least bible minded list is both expected and unexpected. I mean SLC is probably the least religious city in Utah, but at the same time, that’s not saying much given that it’s Utah. It would appear if I had to guess to be related to the Mormon aspect of their religiosity where the Book of Mormon would likely be the primary religious text being read, rather than the bible.
 
I am just speculating here, but as an individual raised in the South, the culture in my region was primarily Protestant. There was a great deal of emphasis placed on Bible study and scripture. Given this, the list makes sense to me.

Goes to show that being “Bible minded” and Christian are not necessarily the same thing. Either that, or the self-proclaimed “Bible minded” are saying what they think is the right answer but may not be fully honest. It would be interesting to compare these to the murder, violent crime, poverty and education rates by city.
