I got one of those mails. That ask you to nake a wish. And then say it will only come true if you pass it on.
I wavered. Then because the wish was important to me (and I always have this fear of making somebody else a liar) I thought I’ll pass it on real fast before I can think about it too much. In the sense of, what’s done is done.

I did.

And now I feel much worse.

Superstition is wrong. I feel so bad now. No earthly wish should be so (name removed by moderator)ortant to even think about giving up our standards for it.
Maybe I have not deserved it to be true now?
But I have to leave it up to God. Trust onl^y in God^. Pray.

I sent a message to the people I sent it to saying READ THIS FIRST and that I regretted it and to delete it.

And now I wonder if I have committed a mortal sin. By letting myself be tempted such. By letting a wish (a longtime dream of mine) become maybe too important???

It might be hard to find a confession time around here before mass tomorrow. Was this a mortal sin? Do I have to go to confession before receiving communion?

I feel really bad about this. I have a lunp ib my throat as I am writing this. Why did I do this??? Telling myself, do it real fast, then you won’t be able to think about it,… ha ha. And now I feel much worse.

At least I have learned something.

calm down. . . I think your immortal soul will be fine and that gods infinite compassion and love will extend to someone who has passed on a chain mail.

I delete every chain email I get.
If they are cute or have a pretty picture I send them with the chain email part erased.
I think that if you confess to God how sorry you are and in Mass when you say the Confietor and it is a venial sin you are fine. If you believe it to be a mortal sin and can’t get confession with a priest then don’t receive Communion physically receive Him spiritually …

Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that Thou art present
in the Blessed Sacrament. I love Thee above all things
and I desire Thee in my soul.
Since I cannot now receive Thee sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
As though thou wert already there,
I embrace Thee and unite myself wholly to Thee;
permit not that I should ever be separated from Thee.

then go to confession.
May the Lord grant you peace.:signofcross:

I delete every piece of mail that says FWD or has a paperclip, unless I am expecting or have requested such mail from someone. If it is from someone unknown to me I report it as spam and put the sender on my trash list. I inform all my friends that I do no open or read such mail, and that if the attachment or link is to a Catholic or prolife website I have already seen it and do not need a duplicate, and politely ask them to refrain from sending such messages in the future. If it is a chain letter, I explain why they are wrong and suggest they stop the practice of responding to them.

I have passed on chain mails in the past (and yes, i have also deleted the superstitious part before 😉 ) and I don’t think it’s a real sin per se especially if you don’t really think about it.
What i feel really bad about is:
  • Knowing it may be wrong but wanting to just get it done with so i don’t have to waver over whether or not I should do it
  • Maybe being too attached to the wish I wrote down? let go and let God, right…
I have had such a turbulent day spiritually since then. Going from “this could really be a mortal sin I feel disconnected” to “this was a great spiritual lesson that has led me to growth”.

I am very glad i kind of undid the deed by sending another mail to the people I had sent the first one to, asking them to just delete it.

Mortal sin or not… see, here my scrupulosity comes in. I may feel it was mortal just because I am scrupulous. But then, it really really made me feel bad. So maybe it was mortal.

There is confession at a church close to here today at 4pm. that is in a little more than an hour. I think I’ll try to go!!!
🙂 🙂

I did.
🙂 🙂

I hope this was a lesson well learned. Doing something quickly to avoid guilt can just lead to more guilt!!!

And I really have thought more about such mails again too. And about superstition versus trust in God.

Now I am going to say a prayer for the people who start such mails!
And of course for everybody who becomes a “victim” of them.

I just delete those things, or, like someone else said, if there is a cute picture or something, I edit out the “you must pass this on” part before I forward it.

One time I got one telling me to make a wish and saying I had to send it to 10 people or the thing opposite my wish would come true. I sent it back to the person who sent it to me and told her that my wish was that I might gain ten pounds…and that I was now waiting for the opposite to happen! 😃 That was the last chain-letter email she ever sent me. 👍

While we’re at it - do you pass those on that are prayer chains? Like, they ask you to pray for the person who sent it to you. Or say a prayer for some special intention?

Kathrin

p.s. Marco Polo thanks for being happy with me.🙂

I don’t pass on anything that includes the instruction to pass on to others. To me, it’s especially bad if the prayer chain email tells you you’ll have good luck, or get your wish, or whatever if you do and have bad luck if you don’t.

The only prayer chain stuff I do is among friends.

I’m glad things are working out for you.

Can someone give me specifics as to why superstition is wrong in Catholicism? What exactly does superstition entail that is against God?

I am a rather recent convert to Christianity for about a year. I am still learning, and I feel like I always will continue to learn.

from CCC; 2138:
Superstition is a departure from the worship that we give to the true God. It is manifested in idolatry, as well as in various forms of divination and magic.

I wavered. …
What helps me with those kind of messages is to use them as practice to strengthen my faith. I look for them now and as I delete each one, pray “bless me Lord and keep me from superstition.”

Same for stuff like walking under ladders, stepping on cracks on the sidewalk, letting black cats cross my path, worrying about the day being Friday the 13th, etc. I’ll embrace the superstitious behavior instead of avoiding it and tell God that I trust in Him.

It helps.

To Whom it may concern:
Code:
This letter is being sent to you because recently, you were sent a
chain letter, which you may or may not have passed on.
Code:
This is an anti-chain letter. It originated at Portland State
University. Its purpose is to put a stop to all of the silliness of chain
letters and their complete lack of connection with luck, fortune, or
anything else. If you receive this anti-chain letter, keep it until you
receive a chain letter. Then instead of spreading the chain letter, send
this letter back to whoever sent that obnoxious piece of junk mail to you.
If you sent one recently, send this along to the same people.
Code:
If we get lucky, maybe this will spread all over the world and
eventually get back to those goobs who have nothing better to do than write
meaningless letters that prey on people’s superstitions. (How do they know
how many times a letter has been “around the world” anyway?)
Code:
If you don't, your car will not break down; a close relative is not
going to die; and you won’t lose all of your money. If you do, you probably
won’t win a million dollars, receive a promotion, or suddenly find true
love. (We sincerely hope you do anyway.) However, you will feel much better
about ignoring chain letters in the future.
Code:
    Thank you.
        A friend.
P.S. Just keep God close by. If you see something nice, touching, meaningful, etc. in a chain letter, go ahead and send it to your friends that you think might like to see it. But only them. AFTER you delete the part about how you need to send it to 20 people before the microwave beeps and the popcorn starts to burn…or some junk like that… And, yes, if you goof up and feel like you have to send something to receive luck, Jesus still loves you.

I snipped this highlighted item below from an email i received earlier this week…

Hi,

I’m Fr. Bob McConaghy of Greenbelt chapel
(Philippines ). I just want to make the point that
The Catholic Church is opposed to spiritual chain
Letters, especially those that are rooted in the
‘gospel of prosperity’ or God wants to make you rich
and will do so if you forward such emails to 7, 12,
15 or as many names you have in your address book.
It’s idolatrous baloney. It claims legitimate
devotion to Jesus, Mary, and or saints and frightens
people to believe that if they don’t send the
letters something bad will happen to them.

Or they will get a miracle!

I beg you please not to spread these messages
anymore.

I’ve heard enough confessions in my 32 years to know
how these letters fool and frighten people and give
them a false image of Our Lady, not to mention that
it encourages idolatry and a magical approach to
religion. I am sure you were not aware of this and
mean no ill will. There is no sin here on your part,
you want good things for people and that is noble.

In all humility I would ask you to forward this note
to others.***
