And the winner is...oops!

Did anyone see that Oscar gaffe last night?

For a second, I thought Warren Beatty just couldn’t see to read the envelope. (I’m about much younger, and sometime I need to stretch my arm out to read something)

But, for whatever reason he was given the wrong envelope.

This year I haven’t seen any of the films that were nominated except for the Pixar short, “Piper” which was very cute.

.

Yeah, what an epic fail! Got the honor of seeing live on TV. I’ve seen La La Land, Piper, Borrowed Time, and a few other movies nominated at the Oscars 😃

I am not kidding about this; the PwC rep who handed Beatty the wrong envelope is my first cousin, Brian. Haven’t seen him for years, as he lives in Malibu and I’m in Alabama (we both grew up in Massachusetts) but I really feel for him. He’s a big cheese with PwC and this is his favorite job of the year; I suspect he may have gotten a little too starstruck and was tweeting pics of Emma Stone when he should have been making darn sure that he had the right envelope in his hand. There was even an extensive story about him in the UK’s Daily Mail; they knew more about him than I do!!!

Hope it blows over soon. Has to be tough for him.

Last night might have been the first time in my life I didn’t watch the Red Carpet or the
Oscars. I probably watched my first Oscars in the early 60’s. I have been a fan of Hollywood and the movie stars since watching my first Disney movies in the 1950’s.
Outside of Silence and Arrival, I had not seen any of the nominated movies. I used to go to movies 2-3 times a week, but the past 8-10 years I am lucky to go 2-3 times a year.
Hollywood has gone downhill. Many of the movies, like Arrival are built up to be these great movies and they are giant disappointments.
I heard last night’s show ran almost 4 hours!
Then to make the huge mistake on best picture was terrible!!!
The Golden Age of Hollywood is over. These stars don’t have the auras around them I once saw. I was definitely starstruck. These actors have so much money and are such elitists and so political that they really turn me off. I didn’t watch the Golden Globes or SAG awards either. I used to live for these award shows. No more. Even the Grammy’s,
another favorite, was disappointing.

Absolute classic!

I hope he doesn’t lose his job over this. My X husband worked at Deloitte and big mistakes as such often led to the “letting go” of a person in these prestigious accounting/consulting firms.

We all make mistakes. I also hope it blows over soon.

Mary.

D&T, huh? They perform some audit work for my employer.

Yep, now Deloitte (alone without the Touche last I was aware)
Hope they do a good job for your employer; they hire top notch people.

Mary.

I completely agree with you on this. When I was young, the Oscars was a yearly event in my home. We had seen all the movies and their actors and it was suspenseful to find out which ones would win since they were all good. Now, I don’t even bother seeing any of the modern films since I know I will be disappointed. And, as you say, the so-called stars have no glamour whatsoever although some have talent. Despite this, I did manage to see bits and pieces of the proceedings, including the gaffe at the end. There was also another gaffe I read about. During the In Memoriam segment, which was a tribute to movie people who died the previous year, they showed a picture of a LIVING Australian cinematographer which did not correspond to the name of the deceased one. Imagine seeing your own picture in this way!

I think there should be a thread where we pick out the wrong winners.
For championships in sports they print t shirts for both teams.
I’d love to get my hands on a Hillary for reelection 2020 shirt, or a Atlanta falcons super bowl champs shirt. Or a Cubs World Series champions shirt. Wait…

It sounds like we have the same memories regarding the past Oscar shows and old Hollywood. Remember when Bob Hope was the host and then I think Johnny Carson?
Now they change year from year.
I did hear about the other gaffe showing a picture of a living person during the In Memoriam.

I missed it! Turned off the TV as soon as they announced the winner and went to bed (it was 1 am, after all). Then this morning I woke up to this news.

It looked especially embarrassing for Faye Dunaway, who seemed to disappear from the stage as the debacle unfolded.

I saw two winners this year, La La Land and Zootopia, but I also rarely go to the movies anymore.

Then Kanye stormed the stage and said, “Yo, Barry, I’m really happy for you and I’mma let you finish, but my kid North had one of the best home movies of all time. One of the best home movies of all time!”

I thought it was ironic that an event designed to appreciate the creative arts was dulled with some smug political garbage – and then opps.

 Small world!

I hope it blows over as well.

I tried watching some of it on Sunday but the event is just so scripted and the pressure on you to feel this way or that about something so heavy, it just suffocates me. Plus there’s the fact that these Hollywood people take themselves so seriously and often, as others have pointed out, the actual product they turn out is so mediocre compared to decades past. I remember realizing this coming into sharp focus for me when ‘Gladiator’ won best picture - I had found it barely watchable.
