is the epitome of whats wrong with our society. Nails on the chalkboard to hear it…

Keep drinking coffee, stare me down across the table
While I look outside
So many things I’d say if only I were able
But I just keep quiet and count the cars that pass by

You’ve got opinions, man
We’re all entitled to ‘em, but I never asked
So let me thank you for your time, and try not to waste anymore of mine
And get out of here fast

I hate to break it to you babe, but I’m not drowning
There’s no one here to save

**Who cares if you disagree?**You are not me
Who made you king of anything?
So you dare tell me who to be?
Who died and made you king of anything?

You sound so innocent, all full of good intent
Swear you know best
But you expect me to jump up on board with you
And ride off into your delusional sunset

I’m not the one who’s lost with no direction
But you’ll never see
You’re so busy making maps with my name on them in all caps
You got the talking down, just not the listening

And who cares if you disagree?
You are not me
Who made you king of anything?
So you dare tell me who to be?
Who died and made you king of anything?

All my life I’ve tried to make everybody happy
While I just hurt and hide
Waiting for someone to tell me it’s my turn to decide

Who cares if you disagree?
You are not me
Who made you king of anything?
So you dare tell me who to be?
Who died and made you king of anything?

Let me hold your crown, babe.

I don’t know, maybe I take the song the wrong way, but the underlying message I get from it makes me wanna puke everytime I hear it. Its like the anthem for relativism and choice. http://img2.mocospace.com.edgesuite.net/wap/images/emoticons/sick.gif

Okay…so you’re not a fan of Sara Bareilles:D

But c’mon, you have got to admit it’s a waaayyy better song than that awful Anna Nalick song Breathe (2AM). Every time I hear that song I STILL get ruffled and have to turn it off. Grrrrrrr.

Relativism is bad but what exactly is it about “choice” that gives you the right to mix both? Free will implies responsibility. You are free to choose but you are also bound by the consequences.

In fact, I see nothing wrong with this song here. There is nothing wrong with choosing to be independent of others and to forge your own path. Blind obedience and being bossed around aren’t always everyone’s cup of tea.

😃 LOL Nah you know what, she had another song, her first hit she came out with “Love song” and I really liked that song.

Had to look up the other song and watch the video with lyrics. I had no idea it was that deep. Thats the kinda song I know the hook to, http://img3.mocospace.com.edgesuite.net/wap/images/emoticons/laugh.gif, and then kinda mumble the rest!! I see what you mean though, it is sad.

IDK my kid is in the car with me, and she hears the songs on the radio…(I swear you really do see the world a whole new way once you have kids) and some of them push a message… an ugly message covered up with a sweet catchy beat…

I think it may be just my perception that these days anything regarding ‘choice’ seems to be pertaining to ‘the right to choose to have an abortion’ or ‘the right to choose to be homosexual’. My skin crawls at what ‘choice’ is turning into. IDK… maybe I need to work on that.

Oh its not my cup of tea either. But, since I’ve grown up ( I like to think ) I’ve matured a lot. Sometimes people tell me things. Even now as a grown up. I take it in stride and instead of ignoring them or getting angry I genuinely take in what they have to say. Heck sometimes now I even seek out other peoples advice/wisdom just for another perspective.

I guess (in MY humble opinion) what it is, is, that this song REEKS of a punk teenage kid with a ‘you can’t tell me ****’ additude. I’m wayyy cool on all of that. Pass.

Yes you should. The word “pro-choice” leaves a bad taste in my mouth too but it’s actually because the pea-brained liberal society is attempting to wrench the association of the word from the concept of free will and responsibility. They haven’t won though so I wouldn’t advise to start treating the word “choice” as if they have.

Not everything is good counsel and not every advice you get is good. That’s why it’s important to think for yourself (which is the meaning I have gleaned from this song of yours as well as many others of similar nature). When I have a problem, I am open to a solution. However, I also hold strongly to the words, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” I tell anyone reading this now, if you come to me with unsolicited advice (especially if it’s about something that I see no need to correct such as my pro-life views, my advocacy for moral accountability, and even my choice of clothes, entertainment, food, fashion etc), then at the least I will deem you tactless. At the worst, I will find you as a bossy, self-righteous Pharisee who needs to get off his/her high-horse.

Remember, our Church doctrines have been very much like this for centuries. We do not take kindly to any attempt to “correct” them no?

Do not underestimate the good such an attitude can bring. Such an attitude could very well be the medicine against the plague of blind mass obedience that had been known to spawn from Nazism, Communism, and even the terrorist version of Islam.

An independent mind is exactly what a human being is and that is what God gave us that made us so special and unique.

Here’s some advice. Why don’t you imagine yourself singing this song against a pro-choice, pro-gay liberal activist who harasses you and tells you need to change your ‘blind, superstitious faith’?

P.S.

If it helps, I’ve used this attitude against a lot of obnoxious YouTube atheists who came up on my virtual doorstep thinking I need to be “enlightened”. It really gave me a nice feeling when I saw how these idiots tell people to think “independently” yet don’t think that finding yourself in agreement with a religion, by your own will and intellect, is just as independent as rejecting it all.

Maybe I’m naive (I’m a guy), but I thought this was a kiss-off song and the lyrics are directed to her (now) ex-b.f. “Who cares if you disagree?” With whom else would she be disagreeing?

It’s the chick version of Cee-Lo’s “Forget You.” Or am I missing something?

I’ve heard the song a few dozen times and that’s what I got. It sounded more like a “leave me alone” to an ex-boyfriend who sounds like he has control issues. You know, the “old fashion” men who still believe the idea that women are property.

Idk, I hear the ‘there’s no one here to save’ and think to myself,

‘hmmmm…what stereotypical person is out trying to ‘save’ people’

and then everything else, it seems as if this person is ‘preaching’ to her…Like you see it’s a ‘kiss off’ song, but these songs in general, I’m beginning to despise. Again, it comes down to my kid…because when I tell her something, and she turns around and says, ‘it doesn’t matter what you think its my life’ or when I tell her she can’t wear that mini skirt and she tells me ‘its my body mom you can’t tell me what to do with my body’

THAT kinda garbage. And yes, yes, I have to talk to her, as a parent, its my responsiblity, I talk to her, tell her why and all that - but just knowing it stems from this kinda mentality in these songs and everywhere else…IDK…

You sound just like my mother to be honest. I hate to break it to you but legally speaking (at the very least) your child will reach an age where she/he are entitled to their her/his own lifestyle.

I’ve seen women in mini-skirts live quite independently of their parents. In the same manner, I’ve seen people of all moral shades capable of (more or less) being able to live well off outside their parents roofs and they have every right to not be bound by their rules or be told by anyone how to live their life.

Just wondering… have you ever gone back and listened to any of Coal Miner Daughter’s Loretta Lynn’s early albums? She had fourteen songs banned from the radio:
lorettalynn.com/50/?p=1140#more-1140

I can’t think of any other musical artist who has had that many songs banned from the radio. I do know nobody will even remember this “King of Anything” song years from now.

I think this is actually a pretty good song but I might be reading more positive meaning into than some of the other posters here. To me it feels like it’s about keeping your own course when confronted with peer pressure. On Billboard. com the artist, Sara Bareilles, described this song as kind of a pep talk rather than a kiss off. It’s about her relationship with the music industry and how execs in the industry tried to force her to change the sound and the ideas of her music. In the end I think it’s kind of a statement. I made a choice for myself, you can disagree with it all you want, but I won’t change my mind based on pressure from you or anyone else.
