This is going the rounds right now and getting lots of “traction.”

I personally think if Stephen Fry really saw God he would be stunned into silence… which would be a miracle in itself.

What do you think God would say to Stephen Fry if SF actually said this to God?

I don’t know who Stephen Fry is, (I’m sure God does.) But I’ve heard the same sort of comment, without quite the same vehemence, from an agnostic friend of mind with whom I get along quite well. Speaking of some similar tragedy, he said something similar about confronting God–“I’m going to ask him–what’s that about?” I’m sure many of us might have similar questions.

I’m not going to second guess what God might say, but he might take him to the scene of his Son’s crucifixion and say, “What’s THAT about?”
 
It’s like the Church teaches, God doesn’t send people to hell, people choose it for themselves.

He was in the last 2 Hobbit movies, as the Master of Lake Town (if you saw it).

The problem with Mr. Fry’s statement is that, if there’s no God, then what to make of bone cancer in children? The only possible answer is that it’s just natural selection. Atheists today are actively trying to avoid the Nietszchean, might-makes-right consequences of their worldview.

It’s one reason I like H.P. Lovecraft; he wasn’t a sissy about his atheism, and knew and illustrated that, in a godless universe, humanity is the refuse of the cosmos that was lucky enough to self-replicate, and nothing more.
 
That’s if we are sure there is a hell. Stephen obviously doesn’t and i struggle with doubt too, amongst other things.
 
Prayers and sacrifices will help people like Stephen Fry. God created them and loves them.

We are challenged to pray for and love those who do not know God.

He’s a very intelligent guy with bi-polar disorder which led him into drugs and excess on the one hand and comedy success on the other.

He was in the Blackadder series (as was Hugh Laurie of “House”) and then had success as a comedy duo with Hugh Laurie. He just got “married” a couple of weeks ago to a man 30 years younger than him.

He’s an outspoken atheist and has great success among the secular chattering classes, but to me he is an old windbag, He has many rants against God and has been in debates against Christians.

If he wasn’t so erudite and well spoken more would realize how weak his arguments are.

I had no idea who Stephen Fry even was until someone mentioned him here.

I don´t think any of us has any idea how God would react. We can´t really can´t judge him, because we were told not to judge. We don´t know, for example, if we had been given his life if we would have done any better, and some of us might have done worse.

So, I’m not going to even try to venture a guess on how God would handle it, if he would be angry, merciful.

Let’s hope God’s merciful.
 
There was a time when i was pretty scathing of religion and it wasn’t too long ago. I do sometimes fall back when the doubts and “revelations” on Atheist sites come into my mind . I was never well spoken like Stephen, so you can only imagine what my kind language was

when low enough, i have even said bad things to nuns online…And that was not long ago either. I think in my mind that there is no real forgiveness. From anyone i have met so far.

And also, i have done far worse then Stephen in my view. I know that i will never confess to a priest, so i guess where i am going is secured.

Would somebody please explain to me if you can’t judge what Fry is saying, then how in the world could anybody know what he says is wrong or right? If you can’t judge him, how could you help him?

I’ll tell you why. Because he and those like him know and have known for a long time in their lives those who judge them. They don’t need it constantly rammed down their throat all the time.

What they need is God to come to them.
 
Old windbag, indeed. He could’ve just said “I WILL NOT SERVE.”

As I read his diatribe, I thought about how people DO choose hell and even in the midst of their torments, knowing the truth, they still angrily shake their fists at God and curse him. As 10gr8kids said, God doesn’t send people to hell.

I hope while Steven Fry still lives and breathes, he accepts God’s grace to repent and be saved. I hope he doesn’t let his pride get in the way…it seems the more outspoken atheists are, the harder it would be to do a 360 if/when they started believing. I think satan sets them up that way, strokes their ego and stokes their intelligence so it’s all but impossible to admit a change of heart.

Anyway, SF is in my prayers now.

We can’t judge a person, as that is reserved for God-- but of course we can judge whether certain actions are right or wrong, (and try to leave the individual out of it.)

Note well- I’m not saying we are supposed to be thinking about whether a person’s actions condemn him or her. I’m saying that it’s okay to say whether an act is right or wrong; for the edification and salvation of others, we should be doing that; we should be teaching our children the difference between right and wrong, definitely.

Objectively we can know that what he is saying is wrong, a bit like we can know that if someone says “2 + 2 = 5” they are wrong.

What we can’t “judge” is the state of his soul. We can’t assume that he has enough understanding or free will to be in a state of mortal sin or hell-bound if he doesn’t repent. Especially given his mental illness.

And we need not judge a person to find out why they think wrongly and help them. We don’t call a maths student stupid who gets an equation wrong, because the thing least likely to help them learn is in fact to judge them as stupid and call them such.

LOL, good point! Apparently he’s pretty certain he won’t be impressed with God, so I’m sure you’re correct. I think the devil has a great time blinding people to his existence, then “surprising” them in hell. It’s horrifying, this “if you can’t see it, it doesn’t exist” mentality.
 
By the way…My name is legion, for we are many…haha…uneasy laugh

And i’m sure many would believe that if they read the thread alluding to my sins.
