And you thought your parish had liturgical abuses

Well, what do we expect from Cardinal Mahoney??

Check out the stole of the priest on the right though -

What in tarnation?? Just what liturgical color do you classify that as?? :whacky:

Also, interesting how easily more than half of the photos they showcase are of either the “worship leaders”, choir/congregation, musicians, or “liturgical dancers”… compared to like four pictures of the actual Holy Sacrifice of the Mass!! You can certainly tell where their priorities are!! :nope:

I think the man in the bizarre stole has confused the orans position with the “hands up” position.

The priest with the freeky people stole is just… well, its just… UGH!!!:bigyikes:

#2 I am OK with using modern buildings and such… not my fav, but the Mass is the Mass… But the PINK backdrop that changes words like a freeway sign??? If they used a sort of screen to show the words of songs (over to the side… tacky but not horrible) But does it need to be behind teh altar distracting everyone? Did they have a tabernacle and Crucifix?

#3 Why were there so many ppl standing around the altar… it looked like they were blessing the Eucharist???

#4 How many people does it take to hold up the Eucharist?

#5 If they put Christ and the sacrifice of the Mass above the musicians and liturgical dancers I wouldn’t have as much a problem with it…

The priest’s stole should not be viewed the same as a man’s necktie!!! This looks like a necktie Bill Clinton wore while he was president. It isn’t a fashion statement, it is meant to be *liturgical *to go along with the liturgy… :banghead: TACKY TACKY TACKY

Are you sure this isn’t a site for the MTV “mockery of the Mass Awards?”
Maybe the pics look worse than it really is… I hope!

I am not sure the Mass was held in a Church for this event but there are so many obvious liturgical abuses in these pictures from Vestments, to Sacred Vessels and LIturgical Dancers, number of people on the altar and the predominence of female servers, etc. etc.
You have heard the expression, “What’s wrong with this picture”? Well there seems to be many things wrong with many of these pictures - I wonder if anyone has E-mailed this URL to Cardinal Ratzinger so he can see what one of his fellow Cardinals is doing in California.

California has its own reality I think.

On the bottom of the page, check out the Hawaiin and the Nigerian for some inculturation pictures. The Nigerian has a couple dancing up to the altar with the offferings - probably inculturation. The Hawaiin has Hula dancers on what appears to be the altar but at least they have sweaters on over the top.

This was all at some sort of conference in February according to information on the site.

Some of the pictures might have been taken at times other than during liturgy but the page I gave the URL for is under liturgy and was during a Mass celebrated at that conference.

If the Eucharist were not involved, my first response would be to die laughing.

Yep, so true, every time I look at them I find something else wrong… the worst part is that this was a Catholic Religious Education Congress.:bigyikes: And we wonder why so many of our youth (me once included) don’t know their faith well enough!

I have no prob for this special Hawaiian culture Mass AS LONG AS the Mass is the the Focus of the Mass and not Hula Girl entertainment ON the altar… I wouldnt’ be as upset if they were dancing in the procession… but they are not a “show highlight” They DO NOT belong on the altar. Liturgical dancers and musicians should not** upstage** Jesus Christ. They should be a backdrop, and no glory should be given to anyone but God.

indeed, this is exactly why when I have kids I will not send them to a Catholic school - I’m not wasting my money so poeple like this can “teach” them. Thankfully my husband wants to stay home and homeschool them 🙂

I homeschool my 3 children!!! My husband, children and I LOVE HOMESCHOOL Seton is an awesome curriculum! Thank you for your kind comments about homeschool its nice to hear some encouragement! I am not against Catholic school but we simply couldn’t afford tuition, and we are glad because we have not heard rave reviews for the CS in our town.

#1:This is not a parish, it’s a conference. Mass was held in the largest ballroom, I think, not in a church.

#2:You are judging on mere pictures alone. Only those who were there could possibly say something about it.

I get sort of annoyed at you guys jumping to screaming “liturgical abuse!!!” “they are leading our children away from God!!!” “They are trying to upstage Christ!!!”

Ladies and Gentleman, please be more charitable and give those at the congress the benefit of the doubt. I personally know a few of the people that were singing - they are some of the most committed and selfless youth and music ministers out there.

No one is judging the individuals but one did not have to be there to see there are liturgical abuses in the pictures - I am sure your friends are good Catholics and I mean them no discredit -

Keeping it objective - and the fact that the pictures are reported to be of a Mass, even though not done in a Church, I noticed the following abuses taking place:
  1. Notice the sacred vessels are of glass and a woven basket - not in keeping with RS or the GIRM
  2. Notice the large number of pitchers filled with wine (or sacred blood if it has already been consecrated) thus increasing the risk of spilling while pouring into chalices.
  3. The vestments should not need any comment. And stoles should not be worn OVER chasibles.
  4. The ratio of altar servers that are women instead of boys is not in keeping with the instructions given in RS.
  5. The altar dressings - are they correct?
  6. The liurgical dancers.

The Religious Education Conference is held every year at the Anaheim Convention Center. (In the Diocese of Orange, btw :o)

This particular Mass is held in the arena, an oval shaped room originally designed for basketball - that’s why you see seating fairly high up. The room holds about 9,000 people.

For those interested in where it was held, the link is here:
