Whenever I go to the Christian bookstore, I find a lot of books marked down written by an author named Andrew Murray. Andrew Murray was apparently a pastor for one of the Reformed churches in the early 19th century, and he was a prolific writer. I was skeptical of his biography because I would think his writings would be full of Reformed theology.

I am currently reading through his book “Divine Healing,” and to my surprise, I am not really finding anything that goes against the Catholic faith. His writings are truly inspirational, and I enjoy his writings as supplementary reading. It’s too bad he never became Catholic.

I am just wondering if anyone else has heard of this author or read any of his books. This is my first book of his that I am reading. I have two more of his books next in line. Does anything he writes in his other books go against the Catholic faith? I would think he would probably be one of the few Protestant authors whose works are usually tame and “Catholic friendly.”

I would never let his books outshine our glorious Catholic literature but it makes for good “side reading” and devotion.

I am always curious as to why Catholics would read such books. There are so many great books written by so many great Catholic authors that will fill your lifetime so why buy a protestant book.
A problem I encountered with a relative reading such books is that because much of what they say is true and she knew these truths she assumed everything in the book must be true but some of the things in the book contradicted Church teachings and she did not know this. I found out when she asked me about certain things and I had to correct her thinking.
In my view it is potentially risky reading Protestant books.

Pfffft.
What an arrogant, prideful, and hateful reply.

If you are concerned about only reading what the Roman Catholic faith currently teaches, I suggest you just stick to books that are current and clearly Roman Catholic.

“you will come to know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” - John 8:32 (catholic.org/bible/book.php?id=50&bible_chapter=8)

I’m not familiar with Andrew Murray, but I have read books by other Protestant authors. And I found them to be what you said about Andrew Murray, as inspirational, to be true. They hold nothing back but give their whole selves to their belief and trust in Jesus. And it really does inspire.

I did feel a bit sorry for one author in several ways because she didn’t know some things that would have helped in her faith and love if she had know what the church teaches. It would have made it so much more easy for her. She would do these very laborous searches thru the bible to find answers that the church knew for centuries. But I will say she was certainly devoted.

I liked her spirit of dedication and love for Jesus.

Billy Grahm is another one that I believe was genuine and did a lot of good. He faced the tough issues and gave tough answers. I admired him for being totally dedicated to Christ and giving his full effort to Jesus. Did he miss it on some things? Yes I have to say he did, but even knowing that doesn’t take away the great influence he had for good. I feel we owe the Protestants a great deal of gratitude for the good they do. And I do believe they have reached so many that we haven’t.
