Angel Food Ministries?

Angel Food Ministries…I have never heard of this before. Have any of you? My cousin was telling me about it today.

Anyone here try it before?? I know it’s not a ‘Catholic’ organization, but where does the money that they make go to?? It seems to be that when I looked them up that many different denominations offer this program at their churches.

If you are struggling financially, it’s worth taking a look at. I went to their site and if you are needing the assistance of food in a difficult time it’s $30 where we live for a lot of food. On their site just click on “Find a local site”. Her neighbor ordered and said that their meat was awesome (she said it was the best beef she has ever had). Don’t think I will order from them since I feel that there are others out there who probably need this more than us (but still wanted to let you all know it’s there if you need them) and I am still unsure of where they donate money to. (I know, I sound like such a goof!!)

Funny you mention this. At my boys check-up, last week, there was a flyer on the wall in the waiting room. It said it was a program for families who would like to save money…not assistance. It’s kinda like one of those food co-ops, I think…where they buy huge quantities and everyone shares in the bulk discount. I’ve never tried it, though. I don’t think you’d be taking away from others in need, if you tried it. The flyer was encouraging everyone to join.

ETA…check out their web-site…ribeyes, fillets…no, not assistance!😛 If you do try it, let us know what you think.
 
Yes, I did check out their site. It does sound like they are doing great things. And they take food stamps which would mean that everyone is getting fed that goes through them.

I had never heard of them before and was just curious to know if others had given them a try.

Her neighbor said the filets were so tender compared to others that she normally gets at the supermarket.🤷

This sounds like the SHARE (Self Help And Resource Exchange) program that operated in our county for a couple of years. You get food for a fraction of the cost in exchange for 2 hours a month of community service.

Our parish participated in this program, and was endorsed by our diocese.
 
My parents used to get food through Angel Food Ministries. To the OP, you don’t have to worry that needy people cannot get food because you participate. It is more like a co-op that buys low and sells low to “members.” Anyone can participate because they are not “giving” the food away. It is just a cost savings to help the community as this family’s ministry to God. They don’t make a large “profit” as they use the amount over their cost to keep the ministry going with fuel/storage and other costs always rising.

I think that the only reason I’ve never seen a Catholic parish participate as a host site is that the ministry tucks one little pamphlet in the food box that is Christian in belief, but not Catholic. (For instance, they teach once saved always saved because the founders are Protestant.) I have not seen anything anti-Catholic or that would really offend or lead Catholics astray. Just toss the little paper away when you get the food or take it out if you are buying a delivery for another family.

This is a wonderful opportunity to save money in a dipping economy. It is also a great way to help out perhaps a single parent family that you know could use some help.

Each month they have the “menu” available to allow orders to be placed for the next month. You pay in advance (which keeps costs low) and then pick up the food in a certain window of time on a particular day. Sometimes that is a challenge when the semi is late arriving at the host site.

They offer optional add-ons to the basic package and you can also order more than one basic package for the month. It is clearly not just meant for the “poor” since sometimes the add-on pack is steaks or other meats in quantity. Everything is good quality food (sometimes name brand frozen items are in a pack).

There are many different Protestant churches that participate. Maybe the church you received from was one that believed in osas? They are non-denominational, not the denomination just not exclusive to any particular group. There is a Catholic parish in our area that does participate in this program. So, yes they are out there.

We have received from them before and the food is awesome. I would definitely recommend them.

Mamacita’s DH here, we actually picked up our first order from them this weekend and cannot believe all that you actually get. We have pictures of all the food that I will need to get onto photobucket to upload. We think that it is worth the money. We actually had some of the steak last night and it was really good!!

SHARE has outlets in our area, along with Angel Food. I go to SHARE because it is cheaper per unit in our case ($18 vs. $30), and because SHARE was founded by Catholics (although my pickup site is an Episcopal parish). There is no longer a volunteer requirement from SHARE, although you can list your volunteer hours on the form. I buy anywhere in a month from 3 units and some of the optional offerings to 8 units and some of the optional offerings (We have a chest freezer).

It is a great deal. We were not sure about it at first, thinking that we did not “qualify” or that we were taking away from others that may need it more than us, but discovered that it was not the case. We think that it is a great program and will definitely help us out as we are not struggling, but we are not swimming in money either.

I think that DW did look to see if there was a SHARE program near us and did not find one. I will have to double check on that. When I went to pick up the food on Saturday, they were getting people in and out pretty quick and there was a lot of boxes of food there. I pray that they are doing as good as it seems that they are for those that truly need it.
 
In another thread that is about saving money, I posted about using Angel food ministries. Then I did an internal search on this topic and found this thread.

Someone mentioned that there were few, if any Catholic parishes participating as distribution points, and someone from Oklahoma said that in their area there was one.

Same for here in the Wichita, Kansas area. St. Margaret Mary’s parish is a distribution point.

Why not more Catholic parishes? Who knows? Maybe someone needs to suggest this to their parish councils.
 
That’s it - we need something like that here in Oz! Perhaps I should check up to make sure there isn’t actually already a similar program here before I get my organising butt into gear, but if there is I ain’t heard of it.
 
**We have ordered 3 times. This past month we did not since our last order the steaks were pretty bad. 🤷 So tough that you couldn’t cut them, yet they were cooked medium. :rolleyes: **
