Renaissance paintings are responsible, IMO, for a huge part of the way we think about our Creator and all His Heavenly array.

Paintings obviously helped in one way, for many centuries, to keep alive the imagination for the Christian belief.

Renaissance artists didn’t have modern technology and so this was their medium and paintings achieved in part what photographs and films achieve now, and used in religion often to express that which was ethereal, or hard to summon up in one’s mind.

The semiotics of paintings, due to their requirement, were often the key to the artist’s own thinking but also worldly elements were used as pictorial devices to express the spiritual.

I think sculptures to do with Christ’s life and Our Lady are the upside of more traditional methods of artistry. The Pieta, for example, is sublime. And we can see evidence of semiotics in there even, as Our Lady was usually made bigger than her Son, to show the enormity of the role she undertook and strength of faith in enduring such suffering.

Less helpful are images with angels. For the Christian who knows his or her faith the following does not pose an issue for the most part as we can simply view images for being lovely in their expression of the delicacy of love with which the Creator formed all of His creation. But some devices do make it difficult to form a relational bond with our Heavenly friends, and if it doesn’t for us then it does for those outside the Church who might look at our belief from a scientific point-of-view, and I think the divide is partly due to the romanticism of some of these images which stick in the mind so rigidly that it is hard to prise them away from reality.

You see, Angels don’t need wings. Demons and satan don’t have wings and they are fallen angels. Wings are a device used to express beings that are lofty and from the Heavenly heights - the Firmament above - and used to express a world which is different to our own. We know that angels don’t need wings because they are spirit form. Renaissance brought about artistic devices that stuck in the minds of St. Michael in particular, who is often pictured with a sword, and yet we know the sword is a figurative sword, representing truth, the word of our creator, and doesn’t need an actual sword because he is an angel, a spirit.

IMO, we could do with images of angels that are not so fanciful. Not that I think more romantic images of angels are bad, I love some of them, but it might be helpful if we begun to see angels a little more clearly for what and who they really are. Another poster’s thread awakened to me this need. Maybe to bring our faith up-to-date instead of living in the Renaissance at a time when they didn’t possibly understand these things in the way we can.

I don’t remember anywhere in Scripture an angel being described as having wings. As far as I am aware, they are beings of light, who can enter any place in reality, according to their position, and can enter into one’s dreams. No wings needed.

St. Pio described the title of Angel as its job - images of Angels might be nice when put into their real context and taking their real form into account.

The way history has moved on and the gap has lessened a little bit in understanding between what is real and what is not, are images of the Creator Himself, who was often pictured as an old man with a white beard sitting in a cloud. No one could say these images don’t express a divine quality and are not beautiful but for a long time this kind of image was not helpful for those to see the truth of Christianity from an outside perspective.

Thoughts, opinions?

Ezekiel 10: 1-22

10:1 And saw and behold in the firmament that was over the heads of the cherubims, there appeared over them as it were the sapphire stone, as the appearance of the likeness of a throne.

10:2 And he spoke to the man, that was clothed with linen, and said: Go in between the wheels that are under the cherubims and fill thy hand with the coals of fire that are between the cherubims, and pour them out upon the city. And he went in, in my sight:

10:3 And the cherubims stood on the right side of the house, when the man went in, and a cloud filled the inner court.

10:4 And the glory of the Lord was lifted up from above the cherub to the threshold of the house: and the house was filled with the cloud, and the court was filled with the brightness of the glory of the Lord.

10:5 And the sound of the wings of the cherubims was heard even to the out- ward court as the voice of God Almighty speaking.

10:6 And when he had commanded the man that was clothed with linen, saying: Take fire from the midst of the wheels that are between the cherubims: he went in and stood beside the wheel,

10:7 And one cherub stretched out his arm from the midst of the cherubims to the fire that was between the cherubims: and he took, and put it into the hands of him that was clothed with linen: who took it and went forth.

10:8 And there appeared in the cherubims the likeness of a man’s hand under their wings.**

10:9 And I saw, and behold there were four wheels by the cherubims: one wheel by one cherub, and another wheel by an- other cherub: and the appearance of the wheels was to the sight like the chrysolite stone:

10:10 And as to their appearance, all four were alike: as if a wheel were in the midst of a wheel.

10:11 And when they went, they went by four ways: and they turned not when they went: but to the place whither they first turned, the rest also followed, and did not turn back.
**
10:12 And their whole body, and their necks, and their hands, and their wings, and the circles were full of eyes, round about the four wheels**.

10:13 And these wheels he called voluble, in my hearing.

10:14 And every one had four faces: one face was the face of a cherub, and the second face, the face of a man: and in the third was the face of a lion: and in the fourth the face of an eagle.

10:15 And the cherubims were lifted up: this is the living creature that I had seen by the river Chobar.
**
10:16 And when the cherubims went, the wheels also went by them: and when the cherubims lifted up their wings, to mount up from the earth, the wheels stayed not behind, but were by them.**

10:17 When they stood, these stood: and when they were lifted up, these were lifted up: for the spirit of life was in them.

10:18 And the glory of the Lord went forth from the threshold of the temple: and stood over the cherubims**.

10:19 And the cherubims lifting up their wings, were raised from the earth before me: and as they went out, the wheels also followed: and it stood in the entry of the east gate of the house of the Lord: and the glory of the God of Israel was over them.**

10:20 This is the living creature, which I saw under the God of Israel by the river Chobar: and I understood that they were cherubims.

10:21 Each one had four faces, and each one had four wings: and the likeness of a man’s hand was under their wings.

10:22 And as to the likeness of their faces, they were the same faces which I had seen by the river Chobar, and their looks, and the impulse of every one to go straight forward.

Hi! 😃 Very beautiful indeed!
  1. Is the writer using figurative language?
  2. Cherubims signify beauty, and so, does this role as angel fit with the nature of wings as signs of splendour in the Heavenly spheres - maybe?
There are various roles that angels take due to the realms and dominions - maybe angels such as Cherubims have wings to make them look even more beautiful - wings of a Heavenly substance??

Isaiah 6: 1-13

6:1 In the year that king Ozias died, I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne high and elevated: and his train filled the temple.

6:2 Upon it stood the seraphims: the one had six wings, and the other had six wings: with two they covered his face, and with two they covered his feet, and with two they hew.

6:3 And they cried one to another, and said: Holy, holy, holy, the Lord God of hosts, all the earth is full of his glory.

6:4 And the lintels of the doors were moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke.

6:5 And I said: Woe is me, because I have held my peace; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people that hath unclean lips, and I have seen with my eyes the King the Lord of hosts.

6:6 And one of the seraphims flew to me, and in his hand was a live coal, which he had taken with the tongs off the altar.

6:7 And he touched my mouth, and said: Behold this hath touched thy lips, and thy iniquities shall be taken away, and thy sin shall be cleansed.

6:8 And I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: Whom shall I send? and who shall go for us? And I said: Lo, here am I, send me.

6:9 And he said: Go, and thou shalt say to this people: Hearing, hear, and understand not: and see the vision, and know it not.

6:10 Blind the heart of this people, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes: lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and be converted and I heal them.

6:11 And I said: How long, O Lord? And he said: Until the cities be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land shall be left desolate.

6:12 And the Lord shall remove men far away, and she shall be multiplied that was left in the midst of the earth.

6:13 And there shall be still a tithing therein, and she shall turn, and shall be made a show as a turpentine tree, and as an oak that spreadeth its branches: that which shall stand therein, shall be a holy seed.

Crystal waters 🙂
Still not convinced that these “wings” are not figurative in order to represent a sheer amount of light emitted from them. For example, when they move their arms, this movement could spread light which forms shapes not unlike the shape of a wing.

Is there any book in the NT for example that might shed further light on this?

Actually, as you can see, angels with wings are everywhere in scripture. I don’t doubt that these images are figurative since angels are not physical beings. But the imagery is there for a reason.

I’m not sure about Cherubims and Seruphims not having wings. Because the prophets detailed angels as having wings then maybe they do have wings, wings that emit light - they have a function that we don’t understand. I do tend to think that angels don’t need wings in the way we think from a human perspective. Maybe some do and some don’t. Cherubims are normally linked with a certain kind of our Creator’s love. I would say that wings are a sign of beauty and so maybe this alone is the reason for their existence (if not purely figurative). It cannot be doubted, as the poster proved, that Scripture does detail angels as having wings; nevertheless, the Angels encountered in the NT, as far as I’m aware, are not described as having wings. Though they might be in Revelation somewhere? It might of course be that wings have a different purpose in the Heavenly realms and so when angels are viewed their wings do not always appear to the human eye.

Beings that are in essence nonbodied cannot be accurately shown visually.

While the standard interpretation as a “winged human being” is grossly inaccurate, it works better IMNAAHO, than some of the alternatives, such as the “child’s head with wings” shown in places. Sure, that shows that there is no body, but where’s the power in that form? At least the winged human body has hands.

It’s a shame we don’t have the Ark of the Covenant to show how Angels are Biblically depicted.

Well, we have the next best thing: Ancient Near Eastern art. It’s likely the ancient Israelite conception of what a ‘cherub’ was is something similar or identical to the sacred beasts that was essentially universal in Ancient Near Eastern cultures: human-animal or animal-animal hybrids (winged men, (winged) griffins, (winged) sphinxes, (winged) human-headed bulls, (winged) goat-headed lions, winged eagle-headed men, etc.) who are thought to serve as vehicles for gods and kings and as guardians of the sacred. I mean, in Assyria, their version of these sacred beasts - the winged bulls - were called karibu “one who blesses.”

Wings are physical, just as bodies are physical.

Angels are understood as being nonbodied.

Without a body there is nothing for wings to attach to.

That said, there are heavenly beings in Rev. described as having six wings.

There are various types of angel. What angels are St. Michael and St. Rafael for example, or our guardian angels? Are they noted in Scripture as having wings as painted throughout history?
St. Michael, St. Raphael and St. Gabriel are God’s Archangels. They are God’s Messengers who God sends to fight our toughest battles for us.

The malak Yhwh (‘Messenger/Angel of Yhwh’) or the malak Elohim was apparently thought to have a human form. In fact, a good deal of the angels that appear in the Bible really seem to appear as humans (in Tobit, in fact, the angel Raphael disguises himself as a man); the only thing that marks these messengers as not being regular humans in some instances are their white clothing. (For example, the men in linen of Ezekiel or Daniel or the angels who appear in Jesus’ tomb in the gospels.)

Only the cherubim and the wheels in Ezekiel, the seraphim in Isaiah, and the living creatures in Revelation are really described as being non-humanoid, even sort of eldritch abomination-y, in form. (I’m not counting Abaddon/Apollyon or that “mighty angel” that has John eat the open scroll.) And yes, these are the only ones that are expressly said to have wings.

Ezekiel’s four cherubim each have four faces (a human, an eagle, an ox and a lion) and four wings with eyes, human hands, the feet of a calf. They are accompanied by wheels-within-wheels (ophanim) covered with eyes. Isaiah’s seraphim has six wings: “with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.” (They apparently have hands as well, since one of them touches Isaiah’s lips with a burning coal it held in its hand.) The four living creatures of Revelation are like a combination of Isaiah and Ezekiel: a lion, a calf, one that “had a face like that of a man,” and an eagle that each has six wings and are covered with eyes.

If, as we are assured, angels can communicate with us, they must do so in an incorporeal way. We don’t literally hear one whispering in our ear to avoid this temptation or act.

When we dream, we “see” things as clearly as if they were before our eyes. There is some faculty of the brain that causes/allows that.

One is inclined to think that angels are allowed, at times, to create brain impressions that are vivid and quite “real”. It is not as if we imagine them, but perhaps we are not “seeing them” in the same way we “see” each other. Perhaps our mode of perception is an inferior mode that, for us, requires the interposition of mechanical elements (eyes, nerves) that are, for incorporeal beings, unnecessary.

None of which explains the wings, of course. If angels are, at times, allowed, ordered, caused by God to create visions that do not require the use of eyes or nerves, why the wings?

We don’t really know, but we know they’re part of the “picture” if they’re in scripture. Extreme mobility, perhaps? The ability to travel between heaven and earth as well as to all parts of the universe instantly? There were no jet planes then, and the fastest thing people knew about was the flight of birds.

If angels don’t have wings, what’s the point of ringing bells, Clarence? :hmmm:

Hi. Not necessarily. People can hear angels, and the saints even developed relationships with angels, but they do also “communicate with us…in an incorporeal way.”
When we dream, we “see” things as clearly as if they were before our eyes. There is some faculty of the brain that causes/allows that.
Agreed.

Agreed. They act according to their nature and the roles they are in. I think there is an element of decision. Not that our Creator needs to make decisions but rather that He allows all of His creation to particpate in His saving action. Yet nothing that the saints, the angels and of course Our Lady does is outside of His Will. Definitely, our perception is lower than that of the spiritual realm and therefore it is only by grace that we can attain a more literal relationship with the Heavenly bodies. Our senses are not as advanced as what the inclusion of extra grace can bring about (the saints, again).
None of which explains the wings, of course. If angels are, at times, allowed, ordered, caused by God to create visions that do not require the use of eyes or nerves, why the wings?

This makes sense. People use what is around them to build their image of the Heavens. As in, Renaissance art. I think people can have divine inspirations and visions that are true in meaning and form and so if people from Scripture said that certain angels have wings then I am open to believing that some do, literally, but that their wings must have a reason for being, which in this life we cannot interpret or fathom as to why.

It would be enlightening to see the Ark of the Covenent that is for sure. Yes, I too prefer the winged human pictured with arms and hands, to the Cupid angels that you speak of. Though they exist (IMO).

I have a feeling that angels possibly have wings of a different substance. And these might be for another reason. As I said, for emitting light or to shadow over an evil thought. Angels are the defenders of Reason. So if we approach the subject by thinking: how could wings of a different substance be used for defending reason and The Word - what are these wings.

I am pretty sure that the Arch Angels do not have wings or if they do they do not show to the human eye and I’m pretty sure that the Arch Angels can take whatever form they wish. At the Creator’s discretion. In Heavenly reality, apart from for beauty’s sake, there can surely be no reason for wings to exist on a spiritual plain.

Furthermore, if angels can take form in dreams, in visions, in the conscience as well as reality and in the Heaven, the use of wings are not needed for these actions are their very job, so to move about, only have to think themselves to where they are required to be, as their movement is the acutal active grace, grace in motion, from the Will of the Creator empowered by the Holy Spirit and motivated by Our Lady for bringing all to redemption in her Son.
