I thought I would post some recent comments made by Angelina Jolie regarding being open to pregnancy in her relationship with Brad Pitt as they serve as a great example of why the church teaches that one should always be open to pregnancy and not use contraception.

Her comments illustrate very well that this openness to becoming a parent is linked to the ability to both express and feel love and Angelina says “I wouldn’t trade that experience for the world”.

Far from being anti-sex as some seem to think Christianity wants to raise sex to the level that God intended to be an emotionally and spiritually fulfilling experience in which man becomes co-creator with God of an ensouled human life.

Here is the Jolie article-

Angelina: Brad convinced me to have kids
Angelina Jolie has revealed how partner Brad Pitt changed her views on having children.

The mother-of-six, a strong advocate of adoption, said she never had any desire to give birth until she met Brad. “I think one of the life changing things that he did is that I was absolutely never going to get pregnant. I never felt that it was the right thing to do. I suppose I just looked at him and loved him and just felt open to [getting pregnant]. I suddenly wanted to. It’s one of those things you can’t explain… “I wouldn’t trade that experience for the world,” Angelina said. “It taught me a lot about life, just the process of it, and now we have three other beautiful children that wouldn’t otherwise be here.” There are currently six Jolie-Pitt children: three-month-old twins Knox and Vivienne and two-year-old Shiloh, and their adopted siblings Zahara, three, Pax, five, and Maddox, seven.

Angelina revealed the couple plan to expand their brood by at least one more, and dismissed reports she recently had a tummy tuck: “I’m with a man who’s evolved enough to look at my body and see it as more beautiful, because of the journey it has taken and what it has created. He genuinely sees it that way, so I genuinely feel even sexier.”

Welcome to the forums, Mark! 👋

I’m going to take a wild guess and say that the reason you’ve had a few views on your thread without any replies so far is because we had quite a heated discussion about the Jolie-Pitt family recently.

I wanted to welcome you to the boards, and let you know that I have read some very nice things that Miss Jolie has said, and my heart just melts. And then, I think, “Wouldn’t it be great if they converted to Catholicism and got married??? What a great testament to life they are!”

Admittedly, I know nothing else about her political views, but she seems like such a gentle mother.

God bless ~

DAng! I never knew that about the girl. Suddenly I have a lot of respect for her. Thanks for the post about A.J. :tiphat:

I think that it’s great that she’s open to life, not so great that she and Brad started a relationship while he was still married to Anniston. It’s great that they are open to life, not so great that they are not married, and having sex and babies. And doesn’t look like marriage is on the horizon.

I just don’t get into this couple all that much. I like Jolie in movies though. I just don’t agree with how her and Pitt met, because my sister dated a married man–who too, left his wife for my sister. It turned out badly. I just can’t help but see that Jolie and Pitt are in that same boat, as my sister once was.😦

It would be nice if Jolie and Pitt married–at least that would show a commitment. I wish Hollywood didn’t flaunt having sex outside of marriage–it really is a damaging message.

Jolie is not my favorite person either, but her comments do support the catholic position – that openness to life in the context of spousal love (I know they’re not married!) is not just a Church teaching. It is natural law that can often, or always, be supported by our basic human instincts.

being a mother has brought me closer to God and spurred me to be a better Christian.

I hope and pray that this couple will have a similar path. And, I hope that the children will grow up in a family linked by a sacramental marriage.

That is what I was going to say, word for word, well minus the suster dating a married man…😊

Hi MM! Nice to see you.🙂
I thought I was alone in thinking this. 😊 I’m not judging this couple–I just don’t get that happy thinking about how their relationship came to be, nor how they are having sex outside of marriage.

I liken it to…imagine if I came on here…introduced myself, and said…‘hi everyone–I have fallen in love with a married man, and he is now leaving his wife for me…and then, we are going to live together, not get married, and have lots of babies.’ I mean, what might be the reaction on here? lol:o

Doutbful it would be positive. That’s all I’m trying to say. I look at actors and actresses the same way I view everyone. I don’t think it’s good to have sex outside of marriage…it’s good that they are raising these children, but eventually, if they never marry, their kids will see that it’s not necessary to be married to have sex…Again, not a positive message in my eyes.

Mel Gibson and his wife…they are people who I think are walking the walk…They are not without their issues, but they have been married a long time, are commited to Christ, etc…

I wish there were more Christian pro-life role models out of Hollywood for kids today.

It is good to be seen. :tiphat:

I could not agree with you more. I do applaud them for thier openness to life, but without marriage that is just something that irks me. People see them, see them being open to life, but going about it in a way that goes against all that we know and hold true.

I think that I recall at one time they held the position that they would not get married until “everyone” could get married. While I applaud them for life, I find myself aggrivated by some of the choices that they have made.

I agree with you 100%

They might be getting married soon because according to Angelina in a recent interview her children were questioning why if Shrek was married why weren’t they 😃 Maybe the kids will give them a push in that direction.

I was just going to mention that PK - their initial stance on marriage was that they would not marry until homosexuals were allowed to marry. However, they have seemed to change their stance on that as Angelina feels she will have trouble explaining to the children why Mommy and Daddy aren’t married. Sometimes God comes to us in miraculous ways …Children and Shrek. As far as the other opinion of theirs - they are pretty liberal and I don’t favor it but at least unlike many other Hollywood stars they have atleast taken a stance on something and stood by it. Maybe as time goes on and one of their sons wants to date a boy or one of their daughters wants to date a girl they may come around on that issue as well.

God bless, (and pray for them)

I love it! The kids are smarter than the parents. 😃

My reason for first posting this thread is that the Jolie comments serve as a good example of how being open to pregnancy affects the individual and ones ability to express and feel love and gain spiritual and emotional fulfilment.

Her comments were very good at showing why Christianity teaches what it does regarding contraception.

Other aspects of her life such as being unmarried were not being considered or commented on.

Jolie has I’m sure not lived her life perfectly, however as Pope John Paul II has advised, the holy spirit works through those who have never even heard of or been introduced to Catholicism/Christianity. Jolie stated that in wanting to get pregnant “It’s one of those things you can’t explain.” Jolie is acting in accordance with natural law which John Paul II also commented on many times.

It’s good that non catholics can benefit from the churches teachings.

Forgive me if I don’t see anything to applaud about a couple intentionally getting pregnant outside of marriage. This is not fair to the child and it’s sinful. The only message they are sending out to the world is that it’s cool and hip to live together in sin and bring as many children as you want into the mess…

Her comments back up and support the churches teaching regarding openness to life.

Her actions, ie, her unmarried state, is not being analysed.
