I am looking for good books and writings explaining the angels and angelology. Does anyone know any good solid Catholic writings that would help me understand the angels better? Thanks for any suggestions. God bless,

Look at this video from the episode of Archbishop Sheen’s telecast of “Life is Worth Living”
. It isn’t a book, but it does give a solid theological background.

Have you looked for such books yourself, perhaps online?

I have had similar problems finding any reliable information and I’ve had to garner small pieces of information from various sources over time. There are quite a few references to angels in the bible and I expect you’ve read those.

I bought a copy of “send me your guardian angel” which has a little in it about St Pio and his relationship with his angel. I’ve also read a lot of accounts of encounters with angels but it’s not possible to attest to their reliability. There are of course tons of books written on the subject but many are pandering to new age spirituality, I’m sure you’ve noticed.

I am interested in this subject myself, I have the feeling though that since we are not told more by Our Lord about them it may be that we are not supposed to dwell on such things? That might sound dumb but it’s my feeling.

You might like Peter Kreeft’s book, “Angels and Demons” (1995 Ignatius Press). It’s written in a question and answer format, and I have always found Dr. Kreeft’s books to be both reliable and an enjoyable read.

And happy Feast Day of the Archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, (or St. Michael and All the Angels) which is today!

There are different TYPES of angels, Thrones, dominions,
principalities, etc. down to our own guardian angel. But
I believe that some “angels” whether good or bad are
actually ppl who serve their time in Purgatory HERE on
earth, who has “unfinished business”. I myself have met
one of these recently, I won’t go into details, but I have
received much healing in my relationship w/ my family,
which is experiencing a CRISIS, b/c my mother in the
Nursing Home has opted for euthanasia.

Not after they die, they are no longer bodies,
and depends what you mean by “angels”, b/c in
biblical language, they are “messengers”.

Humans are NOT angels. Humans cannot become angels even after death. Humans and angels are different species.

You are repeating yourself @thistle, I KNOW it sounds
weird, but so did I, until I met this guy who claims to
be “from heaven” whose mother lives opposite side
of the street from my mother’s Nursing Home, his
mother gave us drives there and back to town!

Have you tested this spirit? St Pio I think asked one once to say “long live Jesus and Mary” and it disappeared.

(It’s great that this meeting has helped you with life and belief, and it’s all justified imo, I’m just concerned about the true nature of this particular entity.)

We have seen apparitions of saints to people on Earth, humans who have moved on to Heaven who are permitted to relay some message, and the Church has a “no opinion” position on ghosts. Angel does come from a word for messenger.

It must be clearly stated though that we don’t typically use the word “angel” for messenger anymore, but we do typically use it for a different type (or types) of rational, incorporeal beings created by God who do not naturally have any body. These are not humans, and humans do not become them after death. Even a disembodied soul remains human and will eventually be reunited with its body.

Saint Thomas Aquinas is also generally considered an authority on angels.

I’m just reading this book. He states that he draws on the Summa Theoligica a lot. (St Thomas Aquinas.)

Humans do not turn into angels.

Angels were created way before humans and do not have corporeal forms.

Not by a Catholic, nor is it specifically about Angels, but do read Micahel Heiser’s The Unseen Realm, if you wish to learn about the divine beings of the Bible. (I don’t agree with him on everything)
