I read this morning’s mass readings, and although I understand the meaning of angels, and how they impact our lives…why are there feasts for angels? My mother in law ‘sends thousands of angels to protect me’ when I’m flying for a business trip, etc…and I always wondered…what is that about, exactly?

Here’s today’s reading…please explain? thank you!🙂

Feast of Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, archangels

Psalm: Friday 40

Reading 1
Dn 7:9-10, 13-14

As I watched:

Thrones were set up
and the Ancient One took his throne.
His clothing was bright as snow,
and the hair on his head as white as wool;
His throne was flames of fire,
with wheels of burning fire.
A surging stream of fire
flowed out from where he sat;
Thousands upon thousands were ministering to him,
and myriads upon myriads attended him.

The court was convened, and the books were opened.
As the visions during the night continued, I saw

One like a son of man coming,
on the clouds of heaven;
When he reached the Ancient One
and was presented before him,
He received dominion, glory, and kingship;
nations and peoples of every language serve him.
His dominion is an everlasting dominion
that shall not be taken away,
his kingship shall not be destroyed.

or

Rev 12:7-12ab

War broke out in heaven;
Michael and his angels battled against the dragon.
The dragon and its angels fought back,
but they did not prevail
and there was no longer any place for them in heaven.
The huge dragon, the ancient serpent,
who is called the Devil and Satan,
who deceived the whole world,
was thrown down to earth,
and its angels were thrown down with it.

Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say:
“Now have salvation and power come,
and the Kingdom of our God
and the authority of his Anointed.

For the accuser of our brothers is cast out,
who accuses them before our God day and night.
They conquered him by the Blood of the Lamb
and by the word of their testimony;
love for life did not deter them from death.
Therefore, rejoice, you heavens,
and you who dwell in them.”
ading…

Good question I would say…
The Feast Days are not FOR the angels or FOR the Saints They are for us on earth to remember that we are not alone. We have the Communion of Saints and Angels are a part of that communion.

When I saw Father John Corapi speak about how, *“Our battle is not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers…” * this chapter of Revelation immediately came to mind.

It’s important to keep in mind that angels (good and bad) can influence us all.

A feast day is a good reminder, s we can invite the good one’s to stay around. They take care of the bad one’s. 🙂

We Feast to honer them and celebrate the fact that God has created them and uses them to help us 👍

Here’s some commentary for the reading from Revelation.

The Feast of Michaelmas is to honour the Archangels St. Michael, St. Gabriel, and St. Raphael. Each of these angels are specifically named in the Scriptures and, as such, there is a special honour given to them.

The angels are a part of the Communion of Saints and for this reason alone do they deserve a feast day. But angels are responsible for the work of God throughout history and do many things that we simply do not know about. For a brief example, after our Lord was tempted in the desert He was ministered to by the angels.

Anyway, I’m really butchering this so I think I’ll end now. If you’re interested in learning a bit more about the angels, listen to this file by Dr. Kreeft discussing these blessed creatures.

Happy feast day!
