Hi all - I remember learning as a young child that each of us has a guardian angel “assigned” to us (for lack of a better phrase) - I was wondering what the church teaches about angels / and what is an Archangel compared to a “regular” angel? (sorry if this question doesn’t make much sense) In a nut shell what is the teaching about Angels in general? Thanks for you time!

scborromeo.org/ccc/p1s2c1p5.htm#I or CCC 328-333. It’s a very short portion of the Catechism. It’s easy to read. It’s the Church teaching on angels. There ya go!

To summarize it,
  1. They exist.
  2. They have been part of salvation history mostly by acting as messengers of God’s Word.
    Q) They have interacted with humans in many other ways also throughout salvation history.
  3. They will have something important to do on the Final Day.
  4. They help individual Christians.
  5. We may pray to them.
  6. We may pray with them.
  7. We each have a particular angel who helps us particularly.

There are nine different angels. Three different spheres:

First Sphere:
  1. Seraphim
  2. Cherubim
  3. Thrones
Second Sphere:
4) Dominions
5) Virtues
6) Powers

Third Sphere:
7) Principalities
8) Archangels
9) Angels

The church doesn’t really acknowledge them, probably because it’ll make Catholicism way too “mythical”. For more info about the differences, you can go here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_angelic_hierarchy

This is what I have no idea… How do people know this? How does anyone know anything at all about angles. People have told stories of mythical creatures, it does not make any of them true. Anecdotal evidence is the most unreliable source of evidence for anything.

As the NewAdvent article points out, you cannot really escape the ‘fact’ of Angels in the scriptures. While I personally think that Paul’s ‘identification’ of certain choirs is a pretty far stretch, it is rooted very firmly (and unquestionably) within the Church Tradition (although not exactly firm Dogma).

Pseudo_Dyonisius (Dennis in some places) gave us the most structured hierarchy, as listed by B&B, but this itself was claimed by D to be based upon the Tradition he received from his teachers which filled in the blanks enough to go from the overt but disconnected scriptural references, to the ‘polished’ schema he articulated. However, nothing I have studied on these works suggests that they were the result of anything other than (possibly inspired) intellectual speculation, rather than any sort of ‘angelic revelation’ where an Angel came down and said, “this is what our world is like”.

So, aside from their existence, which is De Fide, the rest is interesting speculation handed down to us for centuries (ok, over a millenia…), that while representative of the Church’s tradition on the subject, is not itself actually ‘binding’ to the Faith.

There are several booklets available that discusses what Angelic “doctrines” are binding Dogma of the Church, and which are believed but not necessarily De Fide. For example, the Catechism on the Angels, published by Opus Angelorum, which includes material from addresses made by Pope JPII, the Catechism, and Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma.

In it, it cites the CCC, sections 328 through 336, inclusive.

For Ott’s FoCD, it lists the De Fide items as being: (semi paraphrased here - B)
*God created the Angels from Nothing at the beginning of time
*The nature of Angels is spiritual
*Demons were created as good angels that became evil through their own fault
*The Secondary task of angels is the protection of mankind and its salvation
*The Devil possesses a certain dominion over mankind due to the Fall

Since I don’t really (practically) understand the distinction between “Sent. Certa.” and “Sent. communis.”, I’ll list those separately:

Certa:
*God set a supernatural final end for the angels and endowed them with the grace needed to reach this end
*The fallen angels were morally tested
*Primary task of the angels is the glorification and service of God
*Everyone has a guardian angel from the time of their baptism

Communis:
*Angels are by nature immortal
*the good angels were subjected to a moral testing

I was going to ask this question too but then I picked up a really good book at Franciscan University. There is a book you can order called : Interview with an Exorcist and it talks about all the realms of the Spiritual/Supernatural race/dominion.

The big question I had was, can your Guardian Angel fall into deception and become a demon. The book is written in Q n A form and is gives very well written thorough answers.!!

Hope this helps!

Can’t you have a gaurdian demon? Just because it is a demon there is nothing to say it would not be looking out for you…

How would you know the difference?

No, that is false. Our Guardian Angel protects us from demons. They are not our friends. They are the enemy, sent my the devil. We pray to Saint Michael to lead all the holy angels in a battle to thrust the devil and all demons and unholy spirits into hell.

A very odd attitude for a person describing herself as a witch no?

Wouldn’t you say so Abbadon - “Angel of the Abyss”?

“Double, double, toil and trouble; Fire burn, and cauldron bubble.”… 😉

We know what we know because God has revealed it to us.

I’d bet that we have a demon gunning for our downfall but looking out for us? Nope.

You air quoted anecdotal for a reason I assume… And yes that is anecdotal. It’s just an individguals writings on a story, no way for anyone else to verify it…
Ummm, no it’s not anectodal (you might want to look up that word)…it’s researched and based on Church teaching, the Bible and such. It’s not a “story”, it’s an CATHOLIC encyclopedia entry 🤷

What makes any of you all believe that we have demons looking out for us.

I think that that is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard or seen posted.

Why would God who is all good and all loving send a Demon to guard you, when it is in them to bring you down and detach you if they can from the Love of God?

Please explain, because you obviously have no real idea of the idea of a Guardian for a human being sent by God.

Take a look at the only person here claiming that - their profile states that they are a witch. Need I say more.

The Church dose acknowledge them, Scripture supports them, and to say the Church would not because it dosen’t want to look too “mythical” would mean the Church is not the Pillar of Truth.

We know what we know of the angels because of Scripture and Tradition, which God has given us, and because He is the Truth itself, He can neither decieve nor be decieved.
