Recently, I’ve been asking questions concerning angels and their activity in our lives. There is one question that I seem not to know how to answer. Before I ask, I know the angelic life is not often mentioned in the Bible, therefore, answers will undoubted be speculative in nature. Even so, Paul states, “So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but is unseen. For what is seen in temporary, and what is unseen is eternal” 2 Corinth 4:18. This may be a stretch to start asking questions about angels and the like, but at least its directed towards the eternal. I’ve been raised Protestant and the discussion of angels about angels is lax so please show grace :]

So, ever since 6th grade when our teacher discussed the battle between good and evil, she mentioned a physical battle that occurs between angels and demons. This battle goes on around us through the course of our actions in daily life whether good or evil. So do we affect the course of angelic battle? And if our evil thoughts and deeds do affect the course of battle, are angels physically wounded and can they die during there battle?

Angels are spirits and therefore have no material bodies, hence they cannot be physically wounded. Furthermore, they cannot die in any sense; they are immortal. The principal objectives of spiritual warfare are the souls of men-- the angels of God fight to save our souls while the demons fight to see us in Hell by influencing us to sin.

We participate in this battle whether we know it or not by growing in virtue and holiness or failing to do so. By our actions we may also lead others to virtue or vice. We should think of God’s angels, especially our guardian angels, as powerful allies in this battle.

Spiritual warfare is real and continues to the end of time. The good news is that Christ has already won the battle; each of us needs only to choose which team we will join.

Thanks for the insight. This question probably was the result of my fascination with LOTR, Gladiator, and the like and physical representation of archangels is similar. I don’t know if its wrong to think the mortal realm can directly influence the immortal realm in the course of spiritual warfare. But I hesitate on that matter. If it is, then our actions have consequences beyond our imagination.

Oh yeah. Pray for your Guardian Angel, it’s like shipping him new armor and ammo. Learn to recognize what tempts you and avoid it, helps your angel out very much, spends less time putting out brushfires and can concentrate on the big stuff. (Brush fires turn into conflagrations if left untended.) Pray to Saint Michael the Archangel for extra help:

Saint Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle; be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who roam through the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

The big guns in the battle against evil are Love, Charity, Sacrifice and Humility.
