I know that the CC teaches that every single human being on the face of the Earth has a guardian angel.

Here’s another question: can our guardian angels know the thoughts we’re thinking too?

How do you know they’re really there? Sense something?

Ok, I have a dumb follow-up question. Does the CC really teach that? Is it actually official dogma that we each have a guardian angel? If so, when did the dogma develop? Is it in the catechism?

I just heard somewhere or read it, okay? Don’t be so sarcastic for crying out loud. Sheesh!

Sorry for asking a question!

it is not an article of faith, however it has been based on
scripture, such as angels leading people from danger,
angels delivering messages, angels being sent to comfort…

plus, in acts 12: (KJV)

14And when she knew Peter’s voice, she opened not the gate for gladness, but ran in, and told how Peter stood before the gate.
15And they said unto her, Thou art mad. But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then said they, It is his angel.
16But Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened the door, and saw him, they were astonished.

can you imagine thinking someone’s angel was at the door?
i feel like this means that if it had been an angel, they wouldn’t
have been totally shocked… which means they must have had
some belief that it was possibly his angel… ( note his is not
capitalized so it was intended to mean they thought
it was Peter’s angel )

and Matthew 18:10

10 Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones;
for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do
always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.

and this is Jesus talking…

🙂

I dont think the above poster was being sarcastic.

We all have a guardian angel, dogma or not.

St Pio could see them, and talked with his as you or I talk with another person.

Yes it is in the Catechism … 328. Other sections do state that each of us has an angel assigned to us. Use the index for other sections in the Catechism where angels are referenced.

oh, and one more… Hebrews 1:

13 But to which of the angels said he at any time,
Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies
thy footstool?
14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to
minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?

they are ministering spirits, sent forth to minister to
the heirs of salvation…

🙂

I wasn’t trying to be sarcastic at all. 😦 I was curious if the Church actually does teach about Guardian Angels. I never really heard of any official statement. That’s why I ask.

So do we each have an angel or does an angel guard many people. I ask because f it’s a one-to-one relationship, there there’s got to be at least the same number of angels as there are people living on the planet at any given time. That’s a lot angels!

Catechism #336 states:

From its beginning until death human life is surrounded by their (angels) watchful care and intercession. (Mt 18:10, Lk 16:22). “Besides each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life”. Already here on earth the Christian life shares by faith in the blessed company of angels and men united in God.

As for the OP, I pray the Rosary twice daily, and I often feel the presence of my guardian angel during that time.

Yes, we each have our own angel. This also means that each person ever in existance had their own angel. Peter Kreeft, a philosophy teacher at Boston College, has the following insights into angels … it is from his book, Angels and Demons: What We Really Know about Them.

The Twelve Most Important Things to Know About Them
They really exist. Not just in our minds, or our myths, or our symbols, or our culture. They are as real as your dog, or your sister, or electricity.
They’re present, right here, right now, right next to you, reading these words with you.
They’re not cute, cuddly, comfortable, chummy, or “cool”. They are fearsome and formidable. They are huge. They are warriors.
They are the real “extra-terrestrials”, the real “Super-men”, the ultimate aliens. Their powers are far beyond those of all fictional creatures.
They are more brilliant minds than Einstein.
They can literally move the heavens and the earth if God permits them.
There are also evil angels, fallen angels, demons, or devils. These too are not myths. Demon possessions, and exorcisms, are real.
Angels are aware of you, even though you can’t usually see or hear them. But you can communicate with them. You can talk to them without even speaking.
You really do have your very own “guardian angel”. Everybody does.
Angels often come disguised. “Do not neglect hospitality, for some have entertained angels unawares”—that’s a warning from life’s oldest and best instruction manual.
We are on a protected part of a great battlefield between angels and devils, extending to eternity.
Angels are sentinels standing at the crossroads where life meets death. They work especially at moments of crisis, at the brink of disaster—for bodies, for souls, and for nations.

Also here is a link to some documents by Father John Hardin.

So is an angel assigned to someone for eternity? When you die does your angel move to another person? In other words: are there as many angels as there are people on Earth, or as many as there are souls?

Don’t know the anwer to your question, although I cannot seem to figure out the reason behind the question. The answer to your question though is a piece of trivia. We do know that each of us has one, given as gift to us by God. That should suffice.

I have a feeling though that the number of angels created by God is many more than we can imagine.

There are as many Angels as God wants there to be Angels.

When we no longer need a Guardian Angel, I assume that God frees the Angel assigned to us. However, that is not specifically addressed in the Catechism.

Isn’t it FABULOUS to belong to a Church that teaches that we each are assigned our VERY OWN ANGEL???

Sorry, I didn’t know that we can’t ask questions simply out of curiousity.

I just never really thought about angels and the official church belief of them. It’s pretty fascinating.

Sorry if it came across that way … did not really mean it but there is much more that is fascinating about angels.

Again sorry if I came across abrupt. Any more questions … actually I like finding stuff out or looking in materials that I have.

.

Catholic Encyclopedia- Guardian Angels
That every individual soul has a guardian angel has never been defined by the Church, and is, consequently, not an article of faith; but it is the “mind of the Church”, as St. Jerome expressed it: “how great the dignity of the soul, since each one has from his birth an angel commissioned to guard it.” (Comm. in Matt., xviii, lib. II).

So no, it is not a specific point of dogma in the Catholic Faith. But as noted above it is the “mind of the Church” or doctrine.

Please read the above notation in the Catholic Encyclopedia for more detail.

They are assigned to us for eternity.
Finally, they are not separated from us after death, but remain with us in heaven, not, however, to help us attain salvation, but “ad aliquam illustrationem”
