Anger and Hatred

Recently, my new neighbors got two rescue dogs. We have a dog of our own, as we love dogs. However, the owners work weird hours, nights, weekends, all times of day, due to their jobs. For the last five nights, they’ve let their dogs out anywhere between midnight and 5am, and have left them out, barking and barking and barking and barking. Their backyard is essentially right outside our bedroom window and these dogs are extremely loud. Not only are they loud, but the owners don’t bring them in, and these dogs just bark, bark at the wind, and non-stop, incessantly. I get it, dogs bark, and dogs should bark. But these last five nights neither my wife or I we’ve have gotten very little sleep because of being startled so quickly and the non-stop barking during normal sleeping hours. On top of that, the owners we’ll leave their dogs in the backyard while they go to work, and the dogs bark at the wind. It’s not a quick bark at someone walking by, since they have an enclosed six foot high fence. But they bark and bark and bark and bark and bark and bark, at nothing. Finally last night I went outside a little after midnight and tried to get the neighbors attention but she just looked at me.

I’ve learned in life, that really nothing works. One of the subdivision’s other neighbors was even worse with their dogs. This was about 5 years ago. His dogs would be out for days barking with no food and water. When I figured I’d be the bigger person and ask kindly if he could bring in his dogs (as some of the other neighbors were irritated too), he came after me with a butcher knife (after I called 911 the police told me he was taken to jail several times for beating his wife). To make matters worse, after he moved out, a new family moved in and started to do the same thing!!! Finally, calling the cops multiple times and having them caught in the act and the cops giving them a $150 ticket, finally solved the problem. But asking them won’t do anything and doing nothing won’t do anything either. If people are already that inconsiderate, what is going to make them stop?

I did go over to try and talk to them the other day after their dogs had been barking for hours straight, so I rang the bell (all the while knowing I might get shot…geesh), and I heard someone rustling around but no one ever answered the door.

I’m tired, and I’m angry. I have a right to be angry, right? This would be justified, would it not? These people don’t have any consideration for their fellow man. But does my anger turn to hatred if I want their dogs to be taken away? These people shouldn’t own dogs if they won’t or can’t take care of them and especially if they are that inconsiderate of their neighbors and are in fact, violating local laws (I’ve looked it up). I want to start video-taping the dogs barking non-stop at all hours of the day and hire a lawyer. Does this mean I’ve turned my anger into hatred? Is my anger justified? When is turning into hatred?

Finally, what would you do? I know most people these days don’t care, and because of this, “none-of-my-business” attitude our culture has taken, no one else wants to step in.

Call the city and ask about noise ordinances and barking dogs, etc, then call the police when they are breaking the ordinances if there are any.

How is this a moral theology problem?

The neighbors are violating noise ordinances, and possibly animal cruelty ordinances. If you’ve talked to them nicely and they refuse to do anything, call the police.

Sure, you should try to set your anger aside as much as you can so it’s not consuming you and you’re not feeling hatred for your neighbor or going after them with a knife, but when they are clearly violating ordinances put in place for the public good and refuse to stop, it’s reasonable to be frustrated and call the cops, the lawyers, etc. on them. Meanwhile, you can pray for them that they mend their ways, that the poor dogs are better cared for, and also pray for God’s grace to come into you so that you aren’t fretting about this situation all day. Easy peasy.

Yep, call the police, I’m sure there are noise ordinances for late night/ early morning…good luck.

When does the anger turn into hatred? I feel consumed by the fact that I’ve gotten very little sleep and I freaking hate what these people are doing. Isn’t that into the morality piece?

Anger is an emotion. You don’t have a “right” to be angry. You just are experiencing that emotion.,
Further indulging anger is pointless; it won’t solve the problem and it leaves you feeling worse.
Find out what the law has to say about noise in your neighborhood. Then use that. Make complaints to the proper authority.
If possible record the noise as evidence. See whether other neighbors are willing to lay complaints in support of yours.

As to your anger: love those who hate you. Pray for those who persecute you. This is not incompatible with taking legal action to abate the problem.

First, you’re tired because these neighbors’ dogs have been keeping you awake. That alone can make your emotions go completely out of whack.

Second, you’re frustrated because this is not the first time you have dealt with an annoying issue in your neighborhood and the last time it was a big headache and scary due to a violent person being involved, so you are having all kinds of frustration, anxiety, etc duking it out in your head on top of the no sleep.

I sincerely doubt you “hate” these people. If their child died or their house burned to the ground, you would not be doing the Snoopy happy dance on their front lawn.

If you are concerned about your emotions, please speak to the priest in confession. My mother did this as she had times of being extremely angry and frustrated with a lifelong friend who had a lot of bothersome habits that would frustrate most sane women, but my mother was worried that she was being un-Christian by getting upset (repeatedly) with the person. The priest gave her some good, short, advice. Priests can be very good at saying just the right thing that clicks for you. It’s Jesus working through them. In the meantime, try to get some rest and do some things you enjoy to take your mind off your frustration.
