Anger at anti-catholic?

John92,

Here is an idea.
Pray hard on this matter and ask Christ to show you the best way to love this professor.

Then e-mail the professor and tell her that you are going to love her with the Love of Christ. Not because she is right in her views of Love, but precisely because she is wrong. Because such views most likely come from personal tragedies and sufferings which have left her bitter and not from a true understanding of unselfish Love.
Tell her you will be praying for her and hoping that she will be able to attain heaven so that you both may be happy there.

True Love is the most complicated simple thing in the world and most people do not get it right, but we have the greatest examples of Love in Christ, and in those who truly follow Him. Mother Theresa and others are the most modern examples of that Love. Emulate them.

Try not to see in this misguided professor, something evil, but something lost. Love her as you Love the Christ within her.

Peace
James

JRKH:

Good idea about asking the questions on what love is.

Perhaps this instructor really does not know what it is. One could ask her what kindness is, what forgiveness is, etc…By asking such questions it might open up her soul to God without her knowing it. Such an approach might be the first steps to be taken in healing her soul.

We’re reading this book called “All About Love” by bell hooks (a black feminist), so reading it has given me a better understanding of what she means, and it’s not really as bad as I originally thought, though still in error.

Basically, bell hooks criticizes the idea that love is just a feeling - a romantic or sexual or affectionate feeling - towards another person. She argues that love has to be something far greater than that, and that love has to be defined by action (though she doesn’t go into what action would define love, and of course we as Christians know that God already gave us the perfect example in his Son - self-sacrifice is the act of love, the most perfect expression). She also criticizes the cynicism of my generation towards love, materialism as getting in the way of love and how greedy of a society we’ve become on all levels (hey I’m with you there lady!), etc.

So not all that bad. Except for how she says most children live in “abusive” homes and have never experienced love because their parents physically discipline them. She sees this as a violation of their rights. What can I say? She acknowledges that discipline is necessary and that discipline of a parent towards children is a manifestation of love, but then she draws an arbitrary line at physical violence. How is a spanking more “unloving” than a time-out? One just works better.

Oh and of course the author (and my teacher) thinks any sort of gender-role is “domination” instead of love, etc. etc.

I might not email the teacher at all, I kinda don’t want to screw up my relationship with her and get bad grades because of it.

This seems to be a common theme in academia and social workers. And to some extent I can see where they are coming from-they react to what they deal with and project that on the rest of society. In my days as a Counselor at a CPC i had a very difficult time at first relating to the problems the teenage girls I was counseling would express. I was raised in a “Leave it to Beaver” enviroment -could not have had better parents and a better home life.

I was told on more than one occassion by a tearful teenager girl that i was the first adult male they had ever talked to who would actually “listen” to what they had to say!
