Anglican/Catholic

I would agree with what most people have said here. My problem with Anglicanism was essentially the contradictions of it. I love the people, the pious worship (in my parish, can’t speak for all), the lovely verbage of the liturgy, the fellowship, and my rector was awesome. Also, being under +John-David Schofield was wonderful as bishop. But fundamentally the contradictions of a Calvinistic Evangelical element and an “anglo-catholic” group that rejects the 39 Articles both communing together under one tent is too mind-boggling at times for me. If I could make sense of it, I’d be there right now. I just can’t intellectually make sense of the contradictions.

As GKC knows, I agree with him that Anglican orders are valid. I think too much has happened since Apostolicae Curae to mitigate what Leo XIII said about Anglican orders. I think that some Anglicans are more Catholic than some Catholics I know. They’re very devout and contemplative as well as all around great folks. But I think Anglicans cannot escape the history…the Articles, Cranmer/Ridley and company, the Calvinist influences over the years, and the branch theory was an untenable position for many Oxford guys so they took the highway to Rome. I can understand being an evangelical calvinist JI Packer/John Stott protestant Anglican more than Anglo-Catholic. But hopefully GKC will convince me one of these days. I’m too thick-headed to “get it” at this point. 😛

As for the “depends on which Anglicans you ask,” that’s dead on! 😃

I never try to make anyone think like an Anglican. Sometimes I try to show how an Anglican thinks. That’s about all I can do.

I never said you did, Jim. I’m just saying that if anyone can help me make sense of what it means to be Anglo-Catholic, it would be you. It’s a compliment. At this point, I don’t understand the phenomenon. That doesn’t mean I won’t ever. At this moment in time, I can’t rationalize it. But then again I teach sixth graders all day. By the time I sit down to theological meditation, my cerebral cortex is fried and my axons and dendrites aren’t firing! LOL

Oh will you stop! You’re sharp as a tack, are building an awesome library, have a great mind, and are very active. You’re not old already…Having a hitch in your get-along doesn’t make ya old.

BTW, I’m reading “Mere Christianity” right now. Enjoying it.

I haven’t read any Lewis but have read Chesterton’s Orthodoxy.
I will agree that Chesterton is good…but a tough read (at least for me)

Chesterton is just one of those authors that I hear EVERYONE lauding and discussing how poignant his works were but I am always the only guy who isn’t into him. I just don’t like his stuff…

I could be wrong, but my impression of Chesterton is the dude just loved to hear himself talk. He was like a more reverent, religious, overweight version of Mark Twain. I guess I’m the only one who doesn’t find the guy witty.

Lewis is pretty good although, like you, I haven’t read much of him. Just starting. GKC is the one who has read everyone ever known to man. He knows and likes them all.
