I saw the coffee hours thing on an Episcopalian website on some “You know you’re Episcopalian…when” list. (It was self deprochating humor.) Robin Williams I think make the Catholic Lite comment- “All the pomp and pageantry, half the guilt.” I’m sure it’s more complex than that. Maybe there are some things about Anglicanism that you have to be raised on the culture or exposed to it for many years before it is fully understood. I was homeschooled part of high school and had to read GK Chesterton (A convert but still culturally British) and the “Ballad of the White Horse”. It was not my best subject, my mind was just too literal back then. I appreciate it more now but only because EWTN had a show which translated him into layman’s terms.
I’m sure there are similar issues in Eastern Orthodoxy when a literal, low context Weatern mind tries to understand it with rote learning.
Speaking of coincidence, the front page of our local paper today (www.timesleader.com) Sunday Nov. 15. Is about the PNCC! It doesn’t get into comparing theologies but talks about a PNCC parish and an RC parish having a joint bingo- but reminiscing about times when parents warned their kids to stay away from the other parish.
