Hello,

My question concerns John Paul II’s pastoral
provision that allowed married Anglican convert’s to come into
the priesthood. I know that celibacy is a discipline and believe in
its theological importance. So what was John Paul’s reasoning
in his provsion to forego the vow of celibacy for them? What was
his theological or pastoral reasoning? Secondly, why does this not apply to other Protestant converts?

P.S. Please don’t respond with “its a discipline answer”.
Yes, I know it is a discipline. I am questioning the pastoral
decision.

I don’t recall the source but I believe a few converts other than Anglicans have received dispensation from celibacy and been ordained. I lost a bet on it to an anti-Catholic associate who provided a secular magazine article which quoted an authoritative Church source. I just can’t remember the details.

I cannot speculate as to John Paul II’s reasons for making this pastoral decision, though I wholeheartedly support it. I do know, however, that it is not just Anglican (Episcopal) clergy who have been ordained as Catholic priests, though married. I know of married former Lutheran and Methodist ministers, now ordained Catholic priests, as well.

You are right on that. I think they were Lutheren. It isn’t limited to the Anglicans.

As for the first part of the OP’s question, I don’t know that John Paul II ever published any reasoning specifically.

If you haven’t seen it yet, the Pastoral Provision website gives some nice background information. The Pastoral provision was not dreamt up by JPII but was part of a request from a group of Anglican priests seeking to be ordained in the Catholic Church following their conversion. It was sorted out and finalized by the CDF and then sent to a Bishops council for a vote. The whole process started under Pope Paul IV but it was JPII who gave the final approval.
