Or so it seems to me you are saying. If a eucharistic miracle (beyond the customary) might occur at the hands of a layman (invalid orders, or no orders), it would seem that which layman, believing what, and doing what to what matter, is irrelevant.
Obviously I don’t want to fall into either extreme of ‘putting God in too small a box’ by saying “no, He can’t/won’t create a miracle in such situations” or “heck, proper sacramentality be darned, let’s have doritos and beer!”. We believe that God instituted the sacraments within the Church in a particular form for a reason and we do our best to follow His lead there. That doesn’t preclude God from manifesting the miraculous elsewhere if it pleases Him.

I am of the firm conviction that God would never perform a miracle to lend credence to a falsehood or to trade a greater good for a lessor good by casting doubt and confusion or by diminishing the prior. It is simply inconceivable that God would damage the credibility and faith of the greater Body of Christ (Catholic Church) by using a miracle to cast into doubt the priestly authority of the Catholic Church.

In other words, the reason why there are NO substantiated miracles whatsoever associated with the Anglican/Episcopal churches or legion of Protestant Churches is for one simple reason - there is no real presence in their rites and because they do not have real ordained priests. Protestants have ecclesiastical prayer groups and communities and group leaders. Anglican/Episcopals have at best a lower level lay deconage that is lower in spiritual authority, grace and spirituality than the average pious and devout Catholic lay member. This is due to The Catholic Church’s super abundance of grace through the real sacraments that makes Catholics a priestly people. I am sorry to say that but its the truth. Rather than go to “Sunday services” Anglicans/Episcopals believing in real presence would do infinitely better to enter into non-denominational prayer-groups with pious Catholics in good standing and pray as a community of “believers” physically inside the Catholic Church but directly before the Blessed Sacrament. This would benefit them much more than going to Sunday services and pray among themselves in a plurality of conflicted beliefs in am Anglican or Episcopal “building”.

But God will never perform a Eucharistic miracle in a Protestant Church simply because they do not have valid priestly orders. It would also be impossible since it would be sending the message that God can change His mind and does not have a single priesthood or that “there is no such thing as one church”. That would violate scripture and make God into a Divine being that can change His mind and His word. Ergo, it won’t happen since that would be the end of God as He has been revealed to us and would mean we might as well go back to worshiping Zeus and any of the legion of other mythological gods who can be fickle and change their minds just like humans can.

As usual, you have a number of idiosyncratic opinions, but, mutatis mutandis, I agree with the basic premise.

So the evidence be damned, you believe what you believe.🤷

I don’t think God boxed Himself in to the extent that the Catholic church maintains He has. He is in charge of the church, not the other way around. Some posts give me the impression that the Pope, or Mary, or the Magisterium, has every right to order God around.

I am yet to be convinced that the Catholic priesthood is all that important so that grace is restrained by the absence of a priest. Or that God will not extend grace to those of His children who do not happen to be Catholic. Grace is overflowing, superabundant, overpowering.

Two quick points:
  1. There are valid Eucharistic miracles outside of the Catholic Church because there are valid sacramental orders outside of the Catholic Church.
For instance, the Coptics Orthodox, the Churches of the East, the Chaldean and Syrian Orthodox, the Ethiopian Orthodox, the Byzantine Orthodox, etc. all have valid holy orders, valid sacraments, and a valid Eucharist.

The reason that Protestant Churches do not have Eucharistic miracles is not because of a lack of faith…rather it is because of a lack of the Sacraments. Invalid matter and invalid orders will always equal an invalid eucharist.
  1. Why is it that when Satanic cults try to attack the flesh of Christ in what is commonly called the black mass they do not steal Protestant hosts from Protestant Churches? This is because the devil knows his enemy and identifies He who is God by the method, location, and focus of the attack. This is also a definitive way for us to know that the Eucharist is not merely a symbolic memorial and that transubstantiation is real.

Not all of us are bilingual. I probably just proved I’m not.
I’m barely lingual myself. But my daughter taught high school Latin for 5 years.

It means “with the necessary changes having been made”, that is, making allowance for the errors in the original, I agree with the basic underlying premise stated.

Greetings, VH.

I’ve been meaning to tell you that I picked up a book a week or so ago.

Of course, I do that regularly; I picked up 67 books on Saturday (it was a good day). But this particular book I speak of is one we spoke of.

Wanted to let you know.

GKC

Dear GKC:

I also collect books but only as many as I can read. That limits me to about one per week. You have more in one week than I have in a year.

It sounds like you need to break ground on that West Wing Library “post haste”.

I spent the weekend at the Catholic Men’s Forum at Duquesne University. Awesome event!

Good to hear from you.

Yours in Christ,

The fundamental issue here is that no one had presented credible evidence. Catholic miracles are thoroughly investigated, reported, witnessed by credible witnesses and confirmed by or supported by the Bishop who has authority in the region it occurred in. The greater miracles & visions such as Fatima, Lourdes etc. are heavily investigated by ecclesiastical authorities over many years before they are approved. In fact, the tendency within The Catholic Church is to be highly skeptical until there are confirming events, or secondary healing etc.

I see no such miracle ever being reported in a Protestant context that has even the same order of magnitude of scrutiny that The Catholic Church performs in assessing a reported miracle or supernatural event. Do Protestants have any physical examples that exist still to this day that are even approximate to The Eucharistic Miracle of Lanciano? I don’ think so.

Here is a link to some info on Catholic Eucharistic Miracles: The Eucharistic Miracles of the World Catalogue of the Vatican International Exhibition
The Eucharistic Miracle of Lanciano, Italy

God did not box himself in but He most definately committed to an intimate relationship to His Church. That is a marriage consummated through the very Blood of Christ. I don’t know that Protestants view marriage or betrothal relationships any less serious than do Catholics but I doubt any would consider a commitment, where one is willing to die for the other out of love to be “boxing in”. No, “boxing in” is somone calling themselves Christian within the picture-frame of the Christian image but who then choose to put themselves through the grave sins of disobedience and heresy into a spiritual coffin. Such a person assumes God will want to interfere and disrespect their defiant personal choices and opinions. 😉

I can’t empathize however with your impression that Catholics order God around through the Pope, Mary, or the magisterium. Can you give any examples?

Given the complexity and mystery of grace I can understand your skepticism on how God channels grace through His Church. For the record there is a thing called universal grace that operates on every soul on the planet. All souls, Catholic and non-Catholic are invited to salvation - that invitation is universal grace. This grace compels all enter into a fullness of grace through His Catholic Church. The graces available through the sacraments not only save but permit us to perfect our souls and actually grow the soul’s spiritual capacity in the same way a child grows larger from the first day it is born until it reaches full adult maturity. But this sacramental grace does not impart a creative limitation on what our souls may be in the same way our DNA and hormones limit our height, weight, and other human factors. Where angels are created to be all they will ever be spiritually we humans under a flood of sacramental grace may actually grow our souls if we labor and cooperate with it. So it may very well be that some outside the Catholic Church are “saved” through the unfathomable Mercy of God. But there is also a notion of higher reward in heaven in proportion to one’s spiritual attainment (through cooperating with God’s grace) that limits the soul of a saved person who does not fully participate with all of God’s graces; assuming the even respond to grace and avoid mortal sin.

Grace is a complex area of theology and no doubt some aspects will remain a mystery. But we already know from scripture and various private revelations of the saints that God’s Divine Mercy is utterly unfathomable. Divine Mercy is a thing that Jesus Himself will contemplate for all eternity in how It relates to each saved soul personally. It gives Jesus eternal delight and joy to contemplate how each and every saved soul comes into eternal salvation and lives in God through Him. My own opinion is that those outside of the Catholic Church may be saved through the intercessions of The Catholic Church. We do pray for the conversion of souls in daily Holy Mass 24/7 all over the globe.

So yes, God’s grace is abundant. But except for the grace of repentance accessible through the sacrament of repentance the greater sacramental graces will not operate in a soul that is in a state of mortal sin. A soul that is not fully committed to an obdurate state of mortal sin is still savable through Universal Grace. But such a soul’s best guarantee of salvation is to yield to the call of that grace and convert to Catholicism since it is very hard to stay in a state of grace without all the sacraments. It is a daily struggle to deny sin and accept grace. When we fall, and every one of us does at some time or another, we are compelled to RUN in tears to confession to regain our channels to perfecting grace through the sacraments.

James

The fundamental issue here is that no one had presented credible evidence.
Two issues: one is that you have already stated that no evidence ever could be credible. The second is that if such things occur among Protestants or Orthodox, not a big deal is made of them. Certainly God’s miraculous action is not used to trumpet the unique rightness of that branch of Christianity, in something that strongly smells of the Catholic Church once again demanding it be acknoweldged as not only superior but sole and taking whatever evidence it can to prove that point. If God did take the elements a Baptist minister consecrated and turn them into the real, palpable flesh and blood of His Son in a service, there would be no proof. For one thing, it would be so unexpected, so unique that it would deeply upset that church or that individual in a way that I doubt it would be something that God would do without bringing, along with the grace of the event, the grace to handle the event.

A second thing is that there is no established mechanism among Protestants by which to evaluate such events. Not would there be. If I, for example, suggested my denomination establish a standing committee for the investigation of such things, laughter or bafflement would be the most positive reaction.

The cases I have heard of have been extremely private, intimate things. I think the Eucharistic miracles that are the topic of this thread are public events, public demonstrations. The transformed elements are put on display, photographed, investigated. So in that sense it is something entirely foreign to Protestants. If or when it happens, we would probably hush it up and those who encountered it would receive pastoral counseling that “such things do not happen” and “it is between you and the Lord” and “don’t publicize it.”
I can’t empathize however with your impression that Catholics order God around through the Pope, Mary, or the magisterium. Can you give any examples?
There have been times when I have seen the “what you bind on earth has been bound in heaven” passage taken to mean, seemingly, that the Church takes the lead on this. I don’t have any examples in front of me. There is the idea that Jesus cannot say no to His Mother, so you ask her and He does what she wants, which means you can control God through His Mother. I have seen Catholic documents that encourage these ideas, though as I said I don’t have any examples.

As to the rest of your post, it is your usual well-written stuff. Grace is not something I feel confident discussing, because, as you say, it is mystery, sacramentum, and I am still exploring it. Sacramental grace is somewhat foreign to me. Grace comes through faith. But then again Christ gave us sacraments, however we number or limit them. And those were not to be idle gifts.

  1. Why is it that when Satanic cults try to attack the flesh of Christ
Satanic Cult can mean one of four things:
  • Groups like the Temple of Set, the Church of Satan, and the like;
  • Groups whose major purpose/function is to reverse the ethics, principles, and practices of Christianity;
  • Groups to which that term is applied, merely on the basis of theri criminal activity;
  • Individuals who describe themselves as such, using it as a coping mechanism during puberty/adolescence;
called the black mass they do not steal Protestant hosts from Protestant Churches?
a) The Black Mass was first created by a Roman Catholic Priest, to be celebrated in a consecrated Catholic Church;

b) The Hellfire Club used hosts from the Church of England. OTOH, they didn’t have to steal them either;
This is because the devil knows his enemy and identifies He who is God by the method, location, and focus of the attack.
Prior to circa 1900, the overwhelming majority of material on Ceremonial Magic was written by, or purported to have been written by Catholic Priests. This most notable exceptions are those that are ascribed to Solomon, and Abraham the Jew. Catholic Priests did more to distribute that material, than any other group, or organization.

You might want to ponder on the implications of that, via a via who the enemy of the devil is.

And yes, I am fully aware of the difference between Ceremonial Magic, and the deliberate worship of Satan.
This is also a definitive way for us to know that the Eucharist is not merely a symbolic memorial and that transubstantiation is real.
All it confirms, is that that is the way that Catholic Christianity defines and explains specific events. It says nothing about how other branches of Christianity, and religions other than Christianity define and explain the same events that happen within their theological framework.

Dear JBlake:
  1. Paul states that the Church is the foundation and bullwork of all truth. So there is only one truth.
  2. Paul states that we all partake of one loaf…receive one baptism…and are of one (singular) faith.
  3. Paul says that if you partake of the bread and wine unworthily then you commit a blasphemy against the body and blood of Christ Jesus…That is not possible if it is merely symbollic.
  4. Jesus said “This is my body which will be broken for you…this is my blood which will shed for many so that sins may be forgiven…Unless you eat my flesh and drink my blood you shall have no life in you (JN 6).”
You might like to take the time to consult Strong’s Concordance regarding the words “phago…and …trago” in John 6. The second term Christ uses for eat means “to knaw, tear and chew like a goat”. So we must truly eat his flesh in the Eucharist.
  1. Also, when the Apostles asked Jesus to stay with them after the ressurrection He broke the bread and handed it to them…only at this moment did they recognize him and he vanished.
Your explanation about many definitions of the same substance of Christ makes both Paul and Christ liars, at worst…or at the very least greatly mistaken. Either it becomes Christ’s actual body and blood or it doesn’t…there are no psuedotruths in CHrist’s words.

As for Satanic practice…the ranks of devil worshipping cults are fed by those attacking the Catholic and Orthodox from the non-Catholic influences of society. The Church even lists consulting a phsychic as a serious sin…just as the Bible does. The Church does not permit the practice of any “magic” whether ceremonial or implicit…it is all evil.

The ranks of Satanic cults are thick with former Protestants including former pastors…especially in Europe and the USA. It is not indicative, though, that Protestants or Catholics are drawn to this. Who would you expect Satan to try to break? The bride of Christ or the disinterested. The disinterested are already in his power.

I know this as I have had occasion to try to bring such individuals back to Christ…a very difficult task. Please pray for all of those trapped in such bondage to sin.

As for the comments about priests…may I remind you that the word “heresy” means any post-baptismal denial of the Truth and Magesterial teaching of the Church. Zwingly, Luther, Knox, Bucer, Melanchton, etc…were all just that…former priests in violation of the bride of Christ, thus heretics.

Heresy seems to be a calling of many former priests. I agree completely.

Jesus had Judas.

What I was pointing out was that different groups can, and do view the exact same event, coming to different conclusions about its cause, effect, and affect. Those conclusions are how the group defines the event.

Anglicanism is a cut off branch.
Anglican “orders” are “illegal” because you have no “copyright”.
There’s no priesthood in Anglicanism so there’s no Eucharist and it doesn’t matter you believe in Real Presence. I am quite aware you had no eucharistic miralces and you won’t have any. Sorry for those painful words but this is what I believe in and, unfortunately for you, that’s how it is.
Perhaps we should just exchange Communion. It’s One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism. Jesus told us where two or more are gathered in my name, I am there.
I don’t understand the big deal. Let’s get over it and move on. Perhaps we should focus on the coming of His Kingdom and forget all the other nonsense.

Simply put, because the Catholic Church teaches that Christ is present in a special and particular way in the Eucharist. It calls the Eucharist the “source and summit” of our life. Paul said that anyone who takes the body of the Lord unworthily condemns himself, which is the impetus behind our Eucharistic discipline (no intercommunion, confession of mortal sins prior to receiving, etc).

Anytime we ask God to make the ordinary extraordinary, and bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ - a miracle happens. Whether it is “bona fide” or evident in the faces of the communicants, makes little difference.

The Eucharist is a supernatural event. By definition, all sacraments are. So Catholic, Anglican, and Lutheran Eucharistic miracles happen every day… as well as in other places.

This is non-biblical. God does not hear the prayers of those living in the grave sin of heresy and separation of His Catholic Church except for repentance. The Catholic Church is the only church in existance who have valid priestly orders and a valid sacramental mass.

’He who rejects you rejects me’.

Protestants have willfully and consciously rejected the One Holy Catholic Apostolic Church. The only ecumenical miracle is that God continues to pour out His Universal Grace to beg Protestants to return to The Church and His full salvific grace before they perish and are held accountable by His Justice for every act of disobedience and willful promotion of false heretical teaching such as this.

James

Group Think, lack of excellence and compromise around a common mean of error are the only things that come out of group decisions. Truth is not held hostage to a consensus nor a majority view.

You attempt to slander both these popes as well as The Church here. The Church is infallible the popes are not impeccable. Even if you could give evidence of this (can you?) the actions of a individual popes who are not teaching ex-cathedra are personal and do not impugn The Church except for those outside the church who want to persecute The Catholic Church. Woe to such on their day of judgement since willful slander of Christ’s Church is a cooperative marker for predestination in the negative sense.
By breaking the disinterested, it is easier to break the Bride of Christ.
