Does anyone know what the official position is of the Anglican Church of Canada’s position is on private confession. Do they believe it is necessary for forgiveness?

@GKmotley is not Canadian, but still Anglican. Maybe he can help…?

He sure isn’t Canadian, though he’s met some fine ones.

Attempting to answer in ignorance is dangerous. Attempting to generalize about Anglicans is …silly? But even so, I’ll bet that there is some general statement I might make. I would bet that private auricular confession is available to a Canadian or anyone approaching a Canadian Anglican priest, if requested. Anglicans generally consider the general confession/absolution, as in any given Mass (I hope) to be efficacious, for all sin. But does, generally, recognize that some penitents want a deeper understanding of their sin(s)pastoral counseling, and direct assurance of the forgiveness confession brings. C. S. Lewis practiced it for years, though he drifted away from it in the last years of his life.

With respect to auricular confession, the catch phrase in Anglicanism is “All can, some should, none must”.

Submitted with trepidation.

It is a totally Anglican answer and it is accurate for that tradition.

What about going to confession at an Anglican Ordinariate parish? Is that sacramentally valid?

good question; frankly i doubt the confession would be valid

every Catholic parish (that i know of ) has Confession available at regularly scheduled times

you can go face-to-face, stay behind a screen or have a private confession w/ a priest by appointment or even on the spot;

why are we catholics talking about confessing to “anglicans” ?

their churches are deserted & lonely; the whole concept of the “english church” is rotting on the vine of secularism

what exactly are we talking about here?
any catholic priest woulld gladly hear your confession, any time, anywhere…

we don’t need the anglicans; they need us…

I’d assume that it would be similar to confessing to a priest of a different Rite, both valid and licit. Interesting question!

Anglican Ordinariates are those Anglicans who have returned to the Catholic Church, but use a form of the Roman Rite that keep some of the Anglican traditions.

Well, the original question was about Anglicanism, not Catholicism. This thread is in ‘Non-Catholic’ for a reason.

And yes, the Ordinate form is simply Anglicans who realized that they do need the Church, came into full communion, and kept some of their liturgical elements.

I think there was a miscommunication. I don’t want to speak for him, but I believe our friend Brian was referring to the Anglican Communion as opposed to the Anglican Ordinariate.

i admit i am not fully up to speed on the topic

i spoke to an anglican priest once; he told me “we are catholic, but englsh”

those were his exact words (paraphrased)

i’ve never spoken to a priest here in USA who said “we are catholic, but American”

i guess i am ignorant…

either you need to go to confession to be forgiven of your sins or you don’t
…in the Catholic tradition, yes. You understand that GK is explaining a common view among Anglicans? As that is what the OP requested.
