Not too long ago I opened a thread entitled “I’m Not Catholic” which you can view here:

forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=251400&highlight=epistemes

I decided to open this new thread since certain circumstances have changed. I, for one, have decided to actively pursue my faith in the Church again - even though I cannot adequately explain why. That is to say, I don’t know why I feel a particular need to be religious now or at all, but I would be lying to myself if I tried to believe I was satisfied and happy in my disobedience.

I went to confession and I am slowly working on the penance portion. I went to Mass for the first time since Easter this morning…and, well, I hated every minute of it.

From the moment I walked in to the moment I left, I sat there subjected to the true misery that I am and have been. My emotions were a blend of sadness, anger, lonliness, dissatisfaction, contempt for everyone including myself, and, perhaps worst of all, doubt.

I didn’t participate in Mass nearly at all, and I don’t think participating would have made me feel or act any better. Since the last time I visited, I have forgotten the words to the Gloria, plus the choir has alternated the melody so drastically since then that it was hard to make out what was being said at all. We had an infant baptized, and I didn’t reconfirm my baptismal vows because I was lost in my thoughts concerning baptism. I didn’t even walk up to accept the Eucharist because I felt extremely unworthy…plus, I’m not even sure I believe in the Real Presence anymore. So, I remained kneeled and debated within myself some very important theological questions.

I find the preceding paragraph exceedingly ironic due to the fact that just this past week I was considering joining the Secular Franciscan Order within the next year or so (again, for reasons I can’t fully explain even to myself).

I have been praying more than ever, and have been reading my Bible, but I lack faith.

Today’s lesson was about the sower and the seed, which is fitting because it allowed me to see that, like some patch of dry, parched earth, I am unreceptive to God’s Word.

I would like to think that setting up an appointment with my priest as a general discussion/confession session might ease some of my “pain,” but I don’t know if it would. It’s not like my priest can repair that which I don’t wish to be mended (again, for reasons I can’t fully explain).

Pray for me, I guess. Maybe that’ll work.

Hi “Epistemes” 👋 You sound “down”. So, the first thing I’d like to say is… have courage! You feel you can’t explain why you’ve decided to pursue your faith. Well, I would go with the simple explanation. God is drawing you to Himself. I know that this happens. Because it happened in my life, as well. Although, the circumstances were different for me. Feeling “religious” isn’t a choice that we make from time to time in our lives. It is in man’s nature, to BE religious. God created us to be holy. The feeling of “religion” is simply an affirmation of the nature, with which our Creator has endowed us. It’s sad that in this age… there are so many millions who don’t know this. They shy away from it… because it isn’t “cool”. Or whatever other reasons there might be.

The “contempt” you describe sounds like a mix of both scruples and depression. I’m sorry that you’re going through such a thing. It might be a good idea to talk to someone such as a priest, your doctor or a trusted friend or relative. I would also recommend, a heart to heart with our very Best Friend… in visits with the Blessed Sacrament.

I know how you feel about forgetting words, etc. That is why I carry a Missal to Mass… at ALL times 😊 And much of the music is unknown to me. When this happens, I don’t worry about it. We can’t sing, if we don’t know the music. However, we CAN raise our hearts and minds to God… in praise, while the music is being done. In this way, we participate. Maybe this would help you, as well. Perhaps, with time… we will learn the newer music.

As far as feeling unworthy at Communion time. Well, none of us are EVER worthy… at ANY time. But as long as we are in a state of grace (that is, without mortal sin on our souls)… it is Our Lord’s Will, that we receive Him, in Holy Communion. He desires to be united with each and every one of us. That is why He instituted the Sacrament of the Eucharist. He is truly present, in the Blessed Sacrament. There are many good books, in fact… that you can read on the subject. I began a thread in another forum on this subject. Here is the link. I’ve ordered the book by Fr. Groeschel. Perhaps it would be of interest to you, as well.

forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=252653

I will definitely keep you in my prayers… and ask that you keep me in yours, too. And please know, above all else… that Our Lord LOVES you. He loves you DEARLY. He loves all of us. That is why He became one of us, died for us… and veils Himself, in all humility… in our Tabernacles. He loves us so much… He desires to remain in our midst. God bless you. And I hope that you are feeling better soon.

I will pray for God to give you the faith that you need.

Blessings

Steel, let’s start at the beginning:
  1. Do you believe in God?
  2. Do you believe in Jesus Christ?
  3. Do you believe in the Catholic Church?

Epistemes,

I am sorry to hear you’re having such a hard time right now. It sounds to me that God is calling you to a closer relationship with Himself - hence the desire to go to Mass and look into secular orders.

Just pray that God will heal your emotions, and make your heart fertile ground for His word to take root. I will pray for you as well this week.

Prayers here.

Perhaps you might ask your Priest to help you find a spiritual director?

I will keep you in my prayers as well. One of my most favorite sermons given on today’s Gospel was “where on the path are you?” Sometimes we don’t seem to be on the path at all. Sometimes we seem to just go down the same old beaten path and get nowhere. I agree with the other’s, God is calling you to a deeper walk with Him. He loves you and I think He just wants you to realize that. When you get down to nothing, all you have is Him anyway, right? Isn’t He all we really need when you really think about it? I think some time spent in Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is in order too, just pour your heart out to Him, He’ll listen. Then when you get finished doing that, you listen, okay? Try reading a little bit of the Gospel everyday too. Come back here and spend some time with all of us, we’re pretty friendly and don’t bite (usually, except when we’re having a bad day, and then we usually apologize.)😃 Oh, and I do think if you had a heart to heart with a good Priest it would help too. Make an appointment with one and just tell the secretary that it’s personal.

I forgot to say something very important, I will ask the Blessed Mother’s intercession for you too.:signofcross:

Ah, the Devil is having a field day with you. He’s angry that you’ve gone back to the Church and is placing all sorts of doubt in your way. Keep persevering! Remember to bless yourself in the name of the Father, Son, & Holy Spirit with holy water when you enter and leave the Church. Pray the Rosary. Ask St. Michael for protection and pray the Prayer to St. Michael. You may wish to have your parish priest come and bless your house and every room in it. Also, do not deny yourself the Eucharist!

I’d like to “second” this. Hope you’re feeling better today, “Epistemes”.

**This shows you are actually exercising faith, paradoxical though it sounds!

God is nearer to you than you realize!

Did you ever read C. S. Lewis’s THE SCREWTAPE LETTERS? In it, the demon Screwtape says something like this: “Believe me, our cause is never in as great danger as when a human being looks out upon a world from which every sign of God is gone, asks why he has been abandoned, and still intends to obey Him.”**

That’s pretty profound. It’s where I’m at, though.

I try not to think too much about the devil, but I think you’re right in certain ways. I’ve lived my life since September '07 as nothing less than an immoral residual atheist, denying my faith, blaspheming God, and living perilously. To walk back into a situation that requires love, faith and obedience is…tough.

I’ve contacted my priest in hopes that he and I might be able to chat for about 30 minutes one day soon.

We’ll keep praying and I agree that the Screwtape Letters is very profound. It isn’t even so much that I ever give any credence to the devil either, I just praise God whenever I think that satan is giving me any thought. “Praise Him, Praise Him, Praise Him in the morning, Praise Him at the noon time, Praise Him, Praise Him, Praise Him til the sun goes down.” (I learned that at one of Blessed Mother Teresa’s houses once years and years ago when I was with a group of other women from our Parish taking meals to the people who stayed there.) Those nuns are awesome, perhaps a talk with one of the nuns at those houses (if one is near you) would help also. The first thing that they do is take you to the “Master of the house”, you are lead to the Chapel to pray when you enter. Very awesome indeed.

Yes, Jesus & Mary are calling you back and the devil is mad as Hell!!.Ha! Often such dryness is called the Dark Night of the Soul.

First you should stop complaining & demanding/expecting too much.

Are you healthy? Are the kids, your husband, everyone okay? Do they love you? Do you love them? If so, rejoice, be glad. Thank God for these blessings. The sun is shining; there is food on the table…God is holding you & your family in his Hand. Surely you can say thanks for that?

When we reduce our self-esteem to that of an insect then we grow in humility and God’s grace pours forth in abundance. There is always someone - nay millions - worse off than ourselves.

Sometimes it is easier to find God in an empty church than Sunday Mass. Try it - drop by, light a candle & just sit. Believe or not, He is there …waiting for you; otherwise He wouldn’t keep calling you.

I find this statement to be confusing.
Ordinarily one completes his/her penance prior to attending Mass.

In facr, one wouldn’t receive the Holy Eucharist without finishing one’s penance first.

Maybe you need to straighten this out with a priest. ASAP.

My penance was to read the Gospel of John and reflect on its meanings, which isn’t easy.

I probably should have completed the penance prior to Mass, but I’m not very good at penances. In fact, I’m quite sure there are a couple I neglected to do from months back - which is pathetic since I used to be quite zealous about performing my penances.

I’ll make sure to discuss this with my priest if time permits.

Have you spoken to a physician or had a medical evaluation? Is it possible that your condition is medically related?
