Just a small intention. In brief, my roommate (who is like a sister to me [and really and truly there is nothing funny going on]), mentioned the council being put together to research the possibility of female deacons. I explained (erroneously apparently) that it definitely did not mean any kind of ordination but was just a title and that female ordination is an impossibility. Mistake. One, I was as it turns out, wrong, and two, my dear sister-friend-thing is a feminist and very picky cultural cafeteria Catholic. Her whole demeanor changed drastically and has been very short and dismissive since yesterday. I told her after research that I was mistaken and that the council is in fact researching the possibility of ordination, just not Priestly ordination. At any rate, she responded “that’s nice” and that was it. She’s still upset. I can only roll my eyes while out of sight. She goes through moods sometimes and always bounces back and is happy and silly and funny again. We are family, through and through, her dad has my kidney and her folks have adopted me, so ending the friendship (and I have no desire to do so) is out of the question. But shes so moooody. So, yeah. If anyone has time please pray for us, k?

You were right. The belief that this “council” will some how bring about female ordination or even female “deaconesses” is about as farfetched as the belief that the recent Synods on the Family were going to bring about “gay marriage” in the Church. Sounds like the secular media has gotten to your roommate. Pope John Paul II declared ex cathedra that women’s ordination is impossible, and he was declared a saint by the current Pope. Enough said.

Sorry for your strife. I have personal experience with this attitude toward perceived female exclusion in the Church, as if the translations of the biblical texts were all biased, making sure all pronouns were swayed when possible to the male pronoun, and such. And the male hierarchy, historically misogynistic, etc.

A Jesus who would break that time’s taboo to speak to a woman, then break another taboo to even speak to a Samaritan woman at the well would not be “constrained by custom” to exclude women from priestly ordination. He told followers to literally munch His flesh and many left Him. If those who chronicled His earthly journey could leave in that time’s cultural gaffs and the perception of cannabilism, why would they erase evidence supporting women’s ordination? His mother Mary would have made a fine priest, if He would have willed it so.

Alas, this is not usually a logical topic but an emotional one. I find it hard enough being a decent Christian without also trying to form God to our ways. And when I think I disagree with the Pope on Church teachings, I ask, like this Pope often answers, “who am I to judge?”

I pray for your reconciliation and restoration of your friendship.

Jesus did exactly that with the first twelve priests. Also, social “customs” which come and go are much different than doctrinal religious ones. If after 2000 years this is changed then just about anything is up for grabs and all of a sudden we’ll find ourselves left with something other than the Catholic faith, which unfortunately is looking more and more like the case every day. Fact of the matter is if He wanted women priests He’d have had them. Just as I’m a man and cannot become a Bride of Christ nor give birth to a child, a woman cannot become a priest nor get another woman pregnant. Once people can again recognize boundaries we’ll all be in a much better place.

IMHO, its never going to happen anyway, so this is all just conversation.

The Deaconesses in the Early Church were brought about for modesty reasons when women were Baptized. They really didn’t have much of a “ministry”.
There are thousands of Lay Ecclesial Ministers that are women, and they don’t get to do much of anything in parishes except what no one else wants to do, so…yeah. Nope. Don’t see it happening.
Just my opinion, YMMV.
Make peace with your friend. It’s not worth losing a friend over. I’ll pray fro your peace.
