Dear Forum

I woke up irritated this morning. I was cranky and not in the mood to talk to anyone.

Then My youngest brother comes along and I tell him to shut up or I will kick you in the teeth.

Then I had a really stupid though with blood coming out of his mouth, then I decided to tone it down and not think of kicking him in the teeth that bad, then I eventually gave the thoughts the boot

I know the Catechism says that if it wishes grave harm to a neighbor, it is mortal. I don’t know if this exactly counts as the thoughts remained for a few moments, maybe half a minute at most I would think…

Mortal???

same answer you will get every time:

you need COUNSELING for your scrupulosity and other OCD related compulsive thoughts and behaviors.

We cannot answer you. You need to be under the care of both a priest and a mental health professional to get this under control.

My first thoughts was this is part of your scrupulosity and OCD. You are a beautiful child of God.

You also are a teen, which means dealing with the typical teen things - like brothers - learning more and more about the faith - striving to follow God.

Learning to understand the Bible is hard for all of us. Understanding as a teen suffering with scrupulosity/ OCD is even harder.

There is no mortal sin. You at no point actually wanted to cause grave harm to your brother. Its easy for me to see, but hard because you are not only trying to read and understand the Bible and CCC, but you are doing so with young and distorted lenses.

You need to be able to not let your thoughts control you.

Have you discussed with your parents going to both a doctor and a priest to help you with this?

I hope your day is brighter.

:dancing:Three cheers for not kicking your brother in the teeth :D, for toning down how hard you wanted to kick him in the teeth and for giving the “kung-fu brother” idea the boot. :slapfight:

I think that if your angry thought was just a passing violent idea out of frustration, irritation, or crankiness, and after a few moments you thought better of it simply because it is wholly unreasonable, then it is not a mortal sin.

Yes, thoughts like this are a problem, and they can be mortal if you truly wish a person harm and think of such things often, but in this case (by the information you gave me, of course) it doesn’t look mortal.

I also don’t think this is quite warranting the need for a therapist, either, until the situation gets out of hand. I think you just need to replace the angry thoughts with loving thoughts.

Given additional circumstances, of course, the situation could change.
I hope this answers your question.

get help,no one here is qualified to help you.writing this i know it feeds your disordered needs.others will be along shortly to affirm these needs.

april32010,

I think you are badly misconstruing what is going on here. This is not a case of murder, or of a person brandishing a heavy steel weapon at her brother, threatening to knock his teeth out.

This is a simple question, asking if it is a mortal sin to wish harm on a person in a passing thought out of frustration or anger.

I think you are over-reacting slightly, and that your encouragement to “get help” is unnecessary in this situation.

God Bless

We all have demonic thoughts from time to time. Don’t dwell on them and it is not any kind of sin, and definitely don’t act them out!! To dwell on,“why did I think that”, gives it life and would be sin.

Lord Jesus, have mercy on me a sinner!

I don’t think he even had a demonic thought. He had an “I woke up in a bad mood for whatever reason instead of a good mood and I have a brother” thought. Nothing more.

Nothing demonic…maybe unkind…but not demonic…maybe “natural” towards a brother…not what mom would want…but not demonic.

“Let me pass my unpleasant feeling on to ‘unpleasant feeling towards my brother’.”

I’m like that every Monday when the alarm goes off. You really need to see a counselor.

Not mortal because you didn’t really didn’t mean to do that. If you did really mean it, you will have to confess that because to actually intend to do bodily harm would be serious.
It would certainly be venial. You need to get serious about getting control of this. 👍

Most assuredly NO mortal sin was committed. You are only human after all. Sometimes we get irritable, cross, angry etc, and have unkind thoughts. At most this was a venial sin, if even that. Do not dwell on it or worry about it. Next time you go to confession then mention it but I would not go to confession just for that and trust me on this - I have a sensitive conscience and strive to strenuously avoid even venial sin. God forbid, were you to draw your last breath now, I am certain that the behaviour you described, although not ideal, would not warrant eternal damnation. Jesus has come to set you free not for you to be imprisoned in self mental torture. Lean on Christ’s mercy and love. Be aware that too much scrupulosity can stray into spiritual pride - you are only a man. You are not a saint. You may be one day but not yet. Remember, even the Saints occasionally got angry.

Now if you dwelt on the angry feeling for a significant period of time and harboured ill well then that would be a different matter. My advice would be to apologise to your brother and then pray an act of contrition and a decade of the rosary. Our Lord knows you are only human and therefore imperfect. What matters is that you are striving to do His Holy Will.

You really do need to get a grip of the scrupulosity as I suspect that Satan is behind it, using it to suck the joy and freedom out of your life and faith in the hope that you will eventually succumb to exhaustion and despair and quit the race to Christ. Christ and our Faith should bring joy and peace. Anything that brings anxiety, fear etc. is not of Christ and is not His Will. Offer your struggle with scrupulosity to the Lord and TRUST that He has what it takes to unburden you - “Come to me all you labour and long for rest, for my yoke is easy and my burden, light”.

I know you desire to be perfect for Christ and yes we must strive for perfection but remember the Christian life is a marathon not a sprint.

Wishing you all the very best and Peace in Christ.👍

No.

You can take it at face value, that you need professional help. We cannot answer this question for you.
I disagree with this assumption. We cannot assume that is an offense needing therapy without context to assume such a thing.

If you have not read all of mymamamary’s threads, please do so. He is a teenager with a kind heart and wishes to be a priest. The problem is that he sees mortal sin everywhere. If he’s having a very difficult time he will have a number of threads going as once. That is why you will see posts that appear to be uncharitable, but they are not. We all love him and want him to get help.

Ah.

Well I guess a lack of context is a problem in my assessment of his situation, although I have seen a few other of his threads. Thank you.

You’re welcome. I didn’t want you to think that there were some who were being cruel.
