Animal have souls, too!

Animals do have souls. They have MORTAL souls. People have immortal souls. Yes, animals deserve respect. No animal deserves to be abused.

I don’t kill bugs as much as possible. I take spiders and other insects outside as much as I can. However, I’m allergic to bees, hornets and wasps. The hornets nest in my window had to go! I killed all of them with wasp and hornet spray. I can’t risk being nice to the likes of bees.

I absolutely believe in being kind to all animals even the ugly kind. It usually grates on the nerves of my family and friends. I have to consider what is dangerous to my health and the health of others when on my “animal saving missions”. Humans are el numero uno. That’s just how it goes.

No, it can’t be argued that plants feel pain or pleasure. Reacting to stimuli has nothing to do with ‘feeling’ something. Feeling is a more complex process than a cause-and-effect due to stimuli.
I think if you take the overall meaning of feeling then plants can feel. Sea sponges are technically animals, they are without a central nervous system. I would say they feel when they encounter a stimuli. I would argue that plants feel when they are being cut or ripped out of the ground. It is not be the same feeling you an I have since they do not have the emotions to back them up. But pain does not need an emotion for it to feel.

I would also argue that when a person touches something hot they imidiately withdraw their hand. This is a cause and effect reaction to heat. Now a plant is not cabable of moving but I have no doubt that their is a reaction.

I am not trying to say plants are on the same level as animals, but there is more too it then they are just plants and feel nothing. People argue it is not ok to kill animals because they feel pain. Why is it ok to kill anything that is living regardless if it feels pain.

I just think there is more too it then that.

Well of course, they feel in reaction to a stimuli, because that’s sensory. I meant it in terms of processing pain. Sea sponges don’t process pain, those kinds of characteristics are present in more complex animals.

What’s there to argue about this, I think everyone knows this from experience…?

The only reaction a plant has is chemical reaction when it burns, there is no other pain related reaction. You’re just trying to find something that’s not there. They are not the same as human beings or other animals, they do not have “pain”. For something to hurt, you have to be able to realize, and be conscious of danger, for that you need a brain, and also a brain capable of processing those complex cognitive abilities, a plant doesn’t have a brain, so there’s nothing to even argue about there, you need at least a brain to feel.

Yes, then stop eating.

In my opinion, it’s acceptable for animals to be used as food. But everything I read about the meat production industry makes it sound more and more like excessive torture. Would God really approve of this? And should we really be killing animals since we have the facts and most of us have the means to eat a healthy diet without meat?

Sorry if these questions sound off-topic or confrontational, I just think it’s a subject that’s not explored too often in Christianity and deserves to be.

God bless,

I am really disturbed when I see people crushing insects or killing animals for no reason. I feel that it is very wrong to kill without an outstanding reason. If you pause to consider what life is like for them, perhaps you’ll respect that they just want to live.
So what animal opened up their mouth and told you this?
I understand that most, if not all animals run off of instinct and do not have the rational mind necessary to consider their own death.
The idea that ‘they just want to live’ assumes they have an understanding of self.

Without higher brain function (and an immortal soul) these concepts are simply beyond the grasp of an animal.

What is a soul though? And aside from the fact that one will last a lot longer, what makes an immortal one different from a mortal one?

I agree. People like to think they’ve got the universe figured out because they can open a dusty book of canons and dogmas, but there are a lot of gray areas yet to be explained by the Church. The issue of animals’ souls is one such issue. Aristotle and Aquinas are not infallible, so the issue of animal souls can continue to be explored. The fact is, animals live and thus should only be killed for the preservation of life, i.e. food, pests, etc. The whole circle of life thing isn’t just a children’s story.
But I wanted to reply because you have FMA in your sig. Dang I love that show!!! You made my day! 👍
Thank you! The show is soooo good!! And I just met one of FMA’s voice actors the other day! Anyone who hasn’t seen that anime should watch it as it’s the type of anime that teaches reallessons. There’s a lot that just has action and gore, but I love the anime that has a deeper meaning. And FullMetal Alchemist is chock-full of not only great quotes but deep lessons on life.
I’m wondering if there isn’t some new-age (ish) stuff going on here.
… The hierarchy of God → Man → Animals is clear in the OT.
…Animals do have souls and animals can suffer but they cannot unite their suffering to Christ’s…
There is no New Age here and I agree completely. Human life is of a higher nature than animal, according to Church teaching. However, the fact that animals can’t unite their sufferings to Christ changes nothing. They deserve the right to live until their natural death or an outstanding reason for their premature death. Also, animals are very close to God! They praise God constantly, just by being! Often, human intellect and reason gets in the way of our closeness to God! We needed Christ! Death for the preservation of Life!
Also, I used negative energy for lack of a better word. Studies have shown that animals are quite adept at selecting good meats and fruits. The difference between the choices given them are that one is raised on organic farms in a humane way and the second choice is produced on factory farms with quantity not quality as the main consideration. Even between two organic products, they picked the one that was treated the best. Well-treated animals make better meat than others.
I agree with many of your statements about animal cruelty, but as someone said, you’re also going to the extremes a bit. Flies are pests, sure they have an ecological role, but not in your house… Their systems are different to ours, they respond to pressure and stimulus, but they don’t necessarily feel pain the way we do, they don’t interpret things as “ow”.
No, I agree with pest control to the point that it’s for a clean and healthy home, of course. But pain is not a consideration in ending life. The only consideration is a justifiable need for taking life.
Humans are el numero uno. That’s just how it goes.
Of course! I didn’t mean to be interpreted as that there is no hierarchy of life! Human life should be preferred to animal life! But human life and human convenience/luxury shouldn’t be confused, and people should be mindful at all times of what it means to live and let live in the most literal sense possible.
Why is it ok to kill anything that is living regardless if it feels pain?
Exactly, pain has no bearing on life. Abortion would be no less horrible if you used anesthetic (I am not equating animal and human life here, just an example).
In my opinion, it’s acceptable for animals to be used as food. But everything I read about the meat production industry makes it sound more and more like excessive torture. Would God really approve of this? And should we really be killing animals since we have the facts and most of us have the means to eat a healthy diet without meat?
Much of the current meat industry is absolutely tortuous! I almost became a vegan as a result of this fact, but I felt like that was giving up. I now strive to use my choices and my vote to change the industry into one that respects the animals it chops and packages by at least providing a good life and a good diet, all natural! And though we have the means to live without meat, I think it’s certainly alright to have meat in one’s diet, though I might still become a vegetarian just for the health benefits. We certainly shouldn’t have a diet that is mostly meat. Everything in moderation.
So what animal opened up their mouth and told you this?
I understand that most, if not all animals run off of instinct and do not have the rational mind necessary to consider their own death.
The idea that ‘they just want to live’ assumes they have an understanding of self.

Life desires life. One doesn’t have to be able to reason one’s individuality to desire life. The desire to live goes much deeper than intellect. The fact that animals have instincts to survive is clear evidence that they desire life, even if they can’t write a dissertation on the definition of the ego and desires.

In order to argue whether animals have souls or not, one must define what exactly is a soul. We all treat souls as generally a good thing to have, but what exactly are they?

I don’t know if animals have souls or not, but they clearly feel emotions. Animals are capable of love and fear. The more I learn about animals, the more I feel that animals are really just dumbed down humans (or humans are hyper advanced animals). Though, if they do have souls, it raises many questions about sin and if there is a heaven for them, etc.

As to insect cruelty, I agree, to a certain extent. I completely sympethize with exterminators who clean their homes of pests. I myself have a zero tolerance policy on any roach or ant I see indoors. However, it can be considered cruel to crush insects for fun. I mean, if they were any other animal, nobody would tolerate the cruelty we put them through. I do not claim to be innocent in this at all; I have caught myself killing bugs for no other reason than they were there.

As for going vegetarian, I won’t do it. **In order to function normally, you kinda need some meat. ** That’s just the way biology works. I do not agree with factory farming, but without such mass production, we wouldn’t be able to feed the masses like we do now.
I have to respectfully disagree with your statement. The average healthy human being can certainly function normally without meat. This may not be the case for people with certain medical conditions. I am a vegetarian and able to lead an extremely active lifestyle. The only thing I find which gets in the way of my training for a marathon is my sheer laziness 😃

In all seriousness however, done wisely, a vegetarian diet is not harmful in itself.

I am really disturbed when I see people crushing insects or killing animals for no reason. I feel that it is very wrong to kill without an outstanding reason. If you pause to consider what life is like for them, perhaps you’ll respect that they just want to live. Outstanding reasons might include killing for meat or killing pests in one’s home that would be impossible to get outside. I do not swat flies; I open the door to let them out. I don’t fish with a rod anymore because after I saw their terrified eyes and their mouths bleeding from the hook (not to mention the worm squirming on the hook). And while I’m on the subject, eating food made from cruelly-treated animals is very harmful for your health as the negative energies present from the cruelty will pass to the one eating it. I think that this is one of the reasons for illnesses today. Bad energies make the body susceptible to illness. So, PLEASE, for the Love of the God who made them, treat animals and plants with respect!!!
There are three types of souls: vegetative, sensitive, and rational.
Animals have only the vegetative and sensitive “souls”. This does not mean that they have two souls, but that they have the properties of both.
A person is an individual substance of a rational nature. (Boethius)
Humans have all three (they have one soul but the properties of all three) because they are rational. That is, humans have an intellect and will. Animals (non persons) so not have this.
Only the rational soul is immortal. This makes humans superior to all other animals, hence, his dominion over them.
This also means that humans should treat all created things with respect.
For more information you will have to look into Plato, Aristotle, Augustine and Aquinas.
It is far too late for me to go into more detail than this, but those four philosophers contain the progression of how this truth was realized.

Basically, Dr. Geraghty says that animals have souls which is what makes them live, but that soul stops existing when the animal dies.
I’ve heard this on multiple accounts–to the point where I believe it.

Life desires life. One doesn’t have to be able to reason one’s individuality to desire life. The desire to live goes much deeper than intellect. The fact that animals have instincts to survive is clear evidence that they desire life, even if they can’t write a dissertation on the definition of the ego and desires.
An instinct towards self presevation does not indicate desire.
Desire is a higher reasoned process than instinct.

I don’t fish with a rod anymore because after I saw their terrified eyes and their mouths bleeding from the hook

Since fish cannot exhibit emotions with their eyes, how can you tell the difference betweed a
“terrified” fish eye and a “non-terrified” fish eye? Methinks you are imparting emotions on a creature that do not exist.
And while I’m on the subject, eating food made from cruelly-treated animals is very harmful for your health as the negative energies present from the cruelty will pass to the one eating it. I think that this is one of the reasons for illnesses today. Bad energies make the body susceptible to illness.
“Negative energies” pass along from a dead animal to what/whoever eats it? Really? So the wolves that eat the moose, the eagle that eats the fish or the snake, the lion that kills and eats the antelope suffer, heck, any predator suffers from the “negative energies” of their prey??

I’m not being sarcastic; where on earth did you come up with this notion?

God knows of our love for our pets . it wouldn’t surprise me that what I love is with me in heaven , what loves you more unconditionally then you pet on this earth - they are pure innocent spirit. why would God not allow us to be with what we love.

So essentially what you are saying is that you cannot be happy in God’s presence unless your pets are there?

That is interesting to me. I would hope that being in the presence of God, who loves me more and more unconditionally than anything ever created. God gave me LIFE. God gave me pets. God gave me the million little things that make me happy and joyful. Why would I need anything else?

Though God has granted us dominion over animals, that doesn’t give us license to abuse them. However, they are on earth for our service and benefit: for work, to keep people company, and for food. No, I don’t believe that animals have souls - and, even if they did, they’d be “lesser” souls, since Jesus made it clear in Matthew 6:26 that humans are of much greater value. Check out CCC 2415-2418.

The Church teaching is very clear that from creation humans have a supernatural end. That means there will not be pets in Heaven or Hell. The souls of animals cease to exist when the animal dies.

How exactly does the existence of an immortal soul for humans remove the possibility for something similar for animals?

Actually I never said anything like that - it was you reading between lines in my thoughts.Where did I say I would not be happy in the presence of God without my pet? Its is simply one of my hopes - relax pal.

The existence of an immortal soul in humans does not preclude the possibility that there may be one for animals.

Church teaching does.

The church has taught and continues to teach that humans are unique among the creatures on earth for their immortal soul.
