I don’t fish with a rod anymore because after **I saw their terrified eyes **and their mouths bleeding from the hook (not to mention the worm squirming on the hook).
This I’ve got to see. Please show me two photos of a fish, one with normal eyes and one with terrified eyes. This ought to be good!!!
And while I’m on the subject, eating food made from cruelly-treated animals is very harmful for your health as the negative energies present from the cruelty will pass to the one eating it.
That is nothing but new age gibberish.
I think that this is one of the reasons for illnesses today. Bad energies make the body susceptible to illness. So, PLEASE, for the Love of the God who made them, treat animals and plants with respect!!!
Yeah, it is probably the bad energies rather than microbes or normal human nature. It is clear that primitive man lived forever since he treated the animals he killed with respect so he didn’t suffer from the negative energies. Right?

Peace

Tim

Actually I never said anything like that - it was you reading between lines in my thoughts.Where did I say I would not be happy in the presence of God without my pet? Its is simply one of my hopes - relax pal.
lol, touche.

But I hope you understand how I could understand what you said in that fashion.

God knows of our love for our pets . it wouldn’t surprise me that what I love is with me in heaven , what loves you more unconditionally then you pet on this earth - they are pure innocent spirit. why would God not allow us to be with what we love.
Pets (or any non-rational animal) do not love. The will is required to love and animals to not have an intellect and a will. The intellect knows and the will seeks that knowledge.

What is a soul though?
The life principle of a living being.
And aside from the fact that one will last a lot longer, what makes an immortal one different from a mortal one?
An immortal soul lives forever, and on judgment day is reunited with it’s body.
A mortal soul ceases to be at the death of the being.

Though God has granted us dominion over animals, that doesn’t give us license to abuse them. However, they are on earth for our service and benefit: for work, to keep people company, and for food. No, I don’t believe that animals have souls - and, even if they did, they’d be “lesser” souls, since Jesus made it clear in Matthew 6:26 that humans are of much greater value. Check out CCC 2415-2418.
I am glad you brought up the Catechism! It make my entire point in starting this thread. I didn’t make this thread to argue over the nature of animal souls; I started it to argue the morality of killing animals needlessly and in manners that are more painful than others (using a hook instead of fish trap/net, for example). “It is contrary to human dignity to cause animals to suffer or die needlessly.” CCC 2418
The existence of an immortal soul in humans does not preclude the possibility that there may be one for animals.

Church teaching does.

The church has taught and continues to teach that humans are unique among the creatures on earth for their immortal soul.
It is true that humans are unique among the creatures of earth for having immortal souls, but the mortality of animal souls does not keep God from preserving them in an immortal state after their death. The last section, titled “Animals and Heaven”, of this FishEaters article makes that argument.

I said I use the word energy for lack of a better term. Traditional medicine uses these old terms to describe actual, physical phenomena in most cases. I’m sure there is another more modern-sounding name I’m not aware of, but it’s been proven that poorly-treated animals don’t provide good nutritional meat. Why do you think Kobe beef is the best? Because they’re treated so well, not that I’m saying that every farm animal should be treated that well!

I have yet to hear any reputable physician use the term ‘negative energies’

Can you please provide a context in which we may hear it?

Were God to preserve an animal immortal, its soul would likewise be immortal.
And we cease to be unique for that trait.

Since that is not church teaching, I will stick with the concept of their mortal soul.

You may have never been to a doctor of traditional medicine. They are doctors with medical licenses who practice traditional Asian medicine. They are a valid option for medical treatment.

I meant to put the link there. Sorry! fisheaters.com/animals.html Animal souls being preserved after death wouldn’t lessen the dignity of human souls. But, again, this argument is kind of off topic. The thread was more about cruelty and senseless killing of our fellow created inhabitants of Earth.

Have they made any type of medical study concerning ‘negative energies’?

What is the context?
What is the definition?

I doubt the church shares the point of view the article espouses.

Yep there pure unemotional little creatures.

We project our emotions onto animals. Our pets really don’t feel the same things that we do. I learned this first hand when I had to give up a beloved cat who was with me through a lot of difficult times in my life. He was very special to me, but it turned out that I wasn’t all that special to him. He bonded with his new owners (dependent upon them for food and petting) and when I went back to visit him, he was polite, but detached. It really hurt because I had memories of him “comforting” me when I was going through tough times, but he was…just being a cat.

I think it’s hard for people not to interpret the expressions, etc. of animals as our own emotions. With dogs, it’s more about leadership, and loyalty to their pack than it is anything as higher-level as love. They don’t have the self-awareness it takes to feel higher-level emotions.

Well fortunate for me its a matter of opinion - I’m not in danger of eternal damnation if I believe they do. Dogs and cat have been know to travel unimaginably long distances to be reunited with their owners and believe it or not have given their lives to save their masters. They are capable of unselfish acts. They are also known to be able to sense the emotions of their owner and provide comfort.Pets have been known to sit on their owners graves refusing to eat or drink and die - there are many unexplainable behaviors that animals have shown. But if you choose to believe other wise then that’s your opinion and I respect it.Call it instinct - thats fine with me.

Like I said, that is an archaic term; I’m not up on the new terminology. Some of you people get too caught up on details! Plus, the Church does not have a point of view on the matter; no dogma has ever been pronounced on the nature of material souls and, obviously, God can do as He very well pleases.

How exactly does the existence of an immortal soul for humans remove the possibility for something similar for animals?
Because the Church teaches that from creation (humans, animals and plants) humans have a supernatural end. That excludes animals and plants from having a supernatural end.

If you want an easy to read explanation I recommend Theology For Beginners by F.J. Sheed.

Absolutely. I don’t see how anyone can argue against that. I think a useful word here would be to avoid allowing animals to suffer intentionally. If more humane ways of killing animals are available to us, then there’s no question that we should choose them over lesser ones.

This word “humane” is widely accepted, yet erroneously applied to animals.
It is sinful to treat animals as humans. It is proper to treat animals as animals. To many people that means to treat them indifferently, or even worse, but:

The Catechism is right, we should not needlessly harm animals, we should respect them as God’s creation. That is an important principle behind everything, to love and respect a creature for love of God. The degree in which one does that is dependent upon the dignity of the thing, and humans have an infinitely higher degree of dignity than animals because humans are rational.

I think people here, myself included, are attempting to give you the reasons behind the Church teaching.

No it is not erroneously applied at all. Most understand the word ‘humane’ to revolve around ‘humanity’ i.e. the humanity of individuals who are doing a particular thing. To do something humanely does not mean that we are ascribing humanity on an object, animal or task, but rather that we are acting in a manner which reflects those characteristics that make up a recognised and idealised aspect of what we know as ‘humanity’ - reason, intelligence and compassion.
