Hey. I was just wondering what everybody’s opinion was one this:
I have a friend who is very noice and a very good friend of mine. He seems like a normal person in every other way, and he treats people in a fairly nice manner, but…
For some reason, he gets a kick out of causing pain to animals… this is kind of disturbing to me, as I enjoy animals, and am, in fact, an animal lover. I told him that I think that it’s wrong and unjust to cause pain to a fellow-creature, but he got really defensive and said that all those animals (Other’s pets, too) deserve to die because they’re pests. But that didn’t answer the problem.
It’s just highly disturbing to me that he would destroy animal life in violent ways for what appears to me to be no reason. What’s really disturbing, though, is that he enjoys it so much… isn’t that sadistic…? He’s a really nice person to me at least, but he gets angry every time I tell him that what he does is cruel and wrong.
Does anybody understand this, or have any thoughts on when it is ok to destroy animal life (Like I have no problem with it if it’s for clothing, food, etc., and it’s done in a human way) or have any advice as far as what I should say to him when he’s about to harm another creature? I know these questions sound weird, but, I don’t know, I guess it just gets to me as an animal lover. He recently joked about killing my pet, and I was NOT very happy about that at all, and told him he crossed the line. Any thoughts…?

I guess this belongs in the moral theology thread, but I wanted to see Protestant and Orthodox and non-Christian views as well.

All creatures are precious to God and even “pests” have a purpose here on earth. Without some of the pesty creatures, we would have many more dead animals rotting away and causing disease, rotten half eaten food sitting around at dumps, and many more discusting things. I view each creature (animal) as a living being, which we are to protect, not torture. I worry about people who enjoy torturing animals because if they can torture and kill a defenseless creature, what is to stop them from doing the same to a human being? This is how serial killers start–with animals. Many are kind and charming business people who you would never suspect and that is why they are hard to catch…I’m not saying your friend is going to be a serial killer, but his behavior is indeed sadistic and deviant in nature. Some people kill pesty animals because they feel the animals are destroying their house, land, garden (I don’t), but when one turns to killing out of pleasure, that is very dangerous…😦

Prayers and petitions,
Alexius:cool:

I know… he gets VERY angry when I tell him what he’s doing is cruel or wrong. I mean, animals are not on par with humans by far (because of the lack of a human soul) but they have some sort of life-force, and they can feel pain. And you’re right about the serial-killer thing. Most of those people with warped minds start out by destroying animal life in a cruel way. I just don’t understand why he could be so nice to fellow-humans, but hate God’s creatures so vehemently (I actually remember him saying he “enjoys killing things”). That makes me angry! I just don’t know how causing pain can be enjoyable to people…

“Animal Life: When is it Okay to Exstinguish?”

when your survival needs it,
whether it be spider, bear or man.

as for your friend:

There are three so-called behavioral red flags that researchers have identified. They are known as the psychopathological triad: enuresis (bed-wetting), pyromania (firestarting), and sadism.
Enuresis: When the problem persists into puberty it is a sign of significant or dangerous emotional disturbance.
Pyromania: Arson is an intense pathological expression of anger and aggression.
Sadism: Usually in the form of animal torture, it acts as a “rehearsal” for the crimes the killer will later commit.

Quote by Jeffrey Dahmer “I found a dog and cut it open just to see what the insides looked like, and for some reason I thought it would be a fun prank to stick the head on a stake and set it out in the woods.”

in regards to your friend,
your question should be a psychological one first,
moral second, religious third.

Enuresis: When the problem persists into puberty it is a sign of significant or dangerous emotional disturbance.
Pyromania: Arson is an intense pathological expression of anger and aggression.
Now that you mention it, he mentioned to me that when he was a kid he started a marsh fire for no reason…
This is kind of creepy. Can a 34 year old man suffer from enuresis as well? If all three of these things are correct… do you think he may be dangerous? He has had occasional outbursts of anger towards me and others, although that hardly ever happens.
Quote by Jeffrey Dahmer “I found a dog and cut it open just to see what the insides looked like, and for some reason I thought it would be a fun prank to stick the head on a stake and set it out in the woods.”
😦 That’s terrible…

I am begging you to get out of this man’s life and stay out. There are so many red flags on him already he looks like a parade float from here. Run, don’t walk.

Ugh… this guy’s a very close friend… and, he also happens to be my boss… I need that money for college. I couldn’t find a better-paying job.

God created the animals and is present within His creation so we should respect them. I agree with you.

Gets extremely upset by criticism, enjoys hurting and killing things in a sadistic way, jokes about hurting you by killing your pet, to you, started a fire for no reason… Brrr. If he were under say 15 I might think it was a stage he was passing through, but an adult? That’s the outline of the personality type that ends up hurting human beings. Most serial killers appear normal, kind or easygoing to their friends except that they show the very traits described above, usually just once in a while, and the friends don’t make the connection until it’s way too late.

I’m not feeling very safe right now… Maybe I’ll just take out a student loan and get to college ASAP. If I leave my job, I won’t know what to do…

Well you’ll just have to pick and choose your battles. Although quit your job is you feel unsafe.

There are laws against him randomly killing animals or torturing them. Perhaps he needs a rude awakening to that fact!

Metaron,

This person has psychological problems besides the obvious moral ones.

In nearly every studied case of sociopathic behavior ending in violence against human beings, the subjects first practiced violence and cruelty toward animals.

It is, really, a gateway behavior to rape and murder.

I am not saying this person will rape and murder anyone but he has the kind of make up which often manifests itself in this kind of behavior.

He needs treatment.

Ok, by now I’m not sure about this. Maybe… It’s time for me to get a new job. Thanks for your (name removed by moderator)ut, my Lutheran buddy. :hug1:

He is a sick, sadistic man. Money isn’t everything, and I’d run as far as the east is from the west to get away from someone like that, even if it meant working at a fast-food joint, taking out student loans, and living with a bunch of roommates (btdt, btw, and it wasn’t the end of the world). For whatever reason, he feels a need to victimize those weaker than himself, and even though he is “friendly” to you now, he IS your boss and that gives him a bit of power over you. What makes you so sure he won’t turn on you? The fact that he joked about killing your pet gives me the heebie-jeebies. And why on earth would you be friends with someone who gets his kicks from murdering innocent animals? Run, don’t walk, away from this creepy “friend!” Good luck and God bless.

I don’t have many friends… so I jump at the opportunity to have someone whom I can rely on, someone who can share my life experiences with, all that… I had no idea until I had already befriended him that he was so cruel and unkind towards animals. Now that I think of it… he is sometimes harsh towards me. He says, because I hate to see anyone/anything suffering, that I’m sensitive, and that “he doesn’t need me”. But I need friendship. I need someone I can confide in… I don’t know. I’m rambling at this point.

Okay sweetie. I get it. Your a quiet kid whose a bit lonely and shy and this guy started out as a nice fellow who made you feel like a good person with a good friend? Got it.

He lied to you.

That’s not who he is and you are not listening to your gut, which is screaming at you, imho. There’s a wonderful book out there by Gavin de Becker called the Gift of Fear
amazon.com/Fear-Survival-Signals-Protect-Violence/dp/B00007MF53/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1196655008&sr=1-1

***It’s available at most libraries. ***

Set aside the whole issue of animal cruelty and at the very least you have a man who has zero regard for the feelings and property of other people. And he uses his supposed authority as a boss to intimidate and make “friends”. (If he was your boss first (?) he should have never become so “friendly”.) He thinks he is right and knows better and they deserve it for not agreeing with him. How dare you, a sensitive nothing he doesn’t need, question him?! Yeah, I bet he gets ticked off alright.

He’s not the god he thinks he is and you can not only do better, it’s become dangerous for you to not do better.

If I were you, or you were my kid at college, I’d tell you to pack up tonight and come home. He can mail the last paycheck to the school for you to pick up there. I’d call the police and tell them what this man is doing and what he’s said to you. No, they may not be able to do more than some extra patrols and such, but well… just in case, I’d want a record of this guy somewhere.

Do not confront this guy and sure as heck don’t be alone with him anymore.

Do you have family to call?

Seriously dear, you’re freaking me out all the way over here.

Get away.

If you need someone to confide in see your parish priest. He will be a friend and will help you to do what is right and safe.

Please see you Priest and get his help.
