You are correct in that we are stewards of God’s creation, including animals. But organizations like PETA want to elevate animals to a level almost equal to humans. They aggressively lobby the world people to not use animals for some foods we eat, for clothing, for medical research and such.

From their website:
PETA focuses its attention on the four areas in which the largest numbers of animals suffer the most intensely for the longest periods of time: on factory farms, in laboratories, in the clothing trade, and in the entertainment industry. We also work on a variety of other issues, including the cruel killing of beavers, birds and other “pests,” and the abuse of backyard dogs.

What I ask of PETA supporters is this: if we dont’ have factory farms, are you willing to hunt, kill, clean and prepare your own meat? As for “cruel killing” of other animals, should we, as stewards of the earth, allow a certain type of animal to overrun human population areas (deer, rats, etc.), to destroy their crops intended for food (deer, boar, rabbits, etc), to endanger air transportation (bird flocks at airports), destroy fragile wetland areas vital for the survival of many other species (nutreas in Texas is a good example)?

I totally agree with not abusing animals for sport, entertainment or any other non-useful purpose. But the plain and simple fact is, they are subordinate to humans and, if unchecked, could endanger human life through uncontrolled growth and infestation of farms, water sources, and other places that I’m sure many of us don’t want to see them. So using them for food, clothing and reducing their numbers in areas where they are a problem for humans is Good Stewardship. Making a species extinct is not. Abusing animals is not.

FWIW, I’m a nature freak. I grew up with animals of all types as household pets. All of my dogs have come from shelters and pounds. I’ve enjoyed animals while backpacking/camping throughout the U.S. and even overseas. They are a beautiful creation to be enjoyed…in many different ways. But groups like PETA would have us enjoy them only one way; alive and free to live as they please with uncontrolled growth. Good for the animal, bad for man.

Merry Christmas!!

not sure i entirely disagree with what you quoted from their web site. i think that when we have to cull herds or limit population growth of some species, it should be done in as humane a manner as possible, and only killing the bare minimum of the animals as what is really needed.

we have racoons here that get into things and cause problems… i’m all for removing them, if necessary even killing them… but just because it has come into our environment doesn’t give us a license to make them suffer more than what is absolutely necessary.

I don’t agree with all of PETAs programs.I don’t believe that animals should be elevated to the level of humans.
In my mind animal rights goes hand in hand with pro-life and the environment. It is all interconnected. One necessarily effects the other in sometimes direct and sometimes subtle ways. All issues need to be addressed.
And just like the Body of Christ (as the Church is called) each person active in any of the areas is doing his or her part to alleviate an ever so convoluted problem.
Each ‘activist’(if you will) sees their particular issue as more important than anothers. And this is all well and good.Take football for example,…the forward concentrates on his position while the linemen take care of theirs.Only in this football team no body is paying attention to how the whole team works. They are too busy pointing fingers at each other and being ball-hogs.So,no body scores…

I think that for some persons this subject falls under the ‘ignorance is bliss’ heading.😦

As the Church teaches and other posters have pointed out we should not cause animals unnecessary suffering. However, humans take priority.
I wish all animal rights groups and animal conservationists would put as much passion, time and energy into saving aborted children and the starving of the world.
I wish the same. And I agree that humans take priority over animals. Humans should always get priority over animals because humans have souls. I hear that animals have material souls but not the kind of eternal souls that humans have.

well you’re certainly entitled to that - but followed to its logical conclusion then, it’s wrong to spend money on any luxury item or “extra” as long as people are starving.

Matthew 14:7For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you want, you can do good for them. But you will not always have me.

Animals are mentioned frequently in scripture, such as the verses below.

Proverbs 12:10,
“The righteous man regards the life of his beast.”

In Genesis 9,
after the flood, it is mentioned five times that “I will make a covenant with you and with all living creatures.”

Deuteronomy 22 and Exodus 23,
“If you see an animal that is overburdened, you should lighten its load to help it.”

Job 12: 7-10,
“Ask the birds, ask the beasts and they will teach you.”

St. Francis of Assisi
Sermon to the Birds - c - 1220
Code:
My little sisters, the birds, much bounden are ye unto God, your Creator, and always in every place ought ye to praise Him, for that He hath given you liberty to fly about everywhere, and hath also given you double and triple rainment; moreover He preserved your seed in the ark of Noah, that your race might not perish out of the world; still more are ye beholden to Him for the element of the air which He hath appointed for you; beyond all this, ye sow not, neither do you reap; and God feedeth you, and giveth you the streams and fountains for your drink; the mountains and valleys for your refuge and the high trees whereon to make your nests; and because ye know not how to spin or sow, God clotheth you, you and your children; wherefore your Creator loveth you much, seeing that He hath bestowed on you so many benefits; and therefore, my little sisters, beware of the sin of ingratitude, and study always to give praises unto God.

Animals should never be chosen over people who are not healthy, well fed, well watered, and have no proper shelter. We should not spend resources on animals that should be spent on people.
If I followed this I should be ringing my vet to make an appointment to have my two cats put to to sleep (oophs mean killed) and donate what I would have spent on them for the rest of their lives to a suitable charity whose focus is humans.

No more milk bones for my dog.I don’t care how glad he is to see me when I get home.Or how much he enriches my life.Stupid dog.Barks at intruders.Consoles me when I’m sad.Keeps my feet warm on cold nights. He acts as if his whole life is centered around pleasing me.He views me the same way I view God.
Stupid dog.

Do Dogs Have Souls? Catholics v Cumberland Presbyterians
Code:
Very cute. This is literally a 'church signs' debate, being played out in a southern town, between the Catholic church and a (fundamentalist) Presbyterian church. From top to bottom shows you the response and counter-response over time.

Humerous, though I think the Presbyterians easliy won and and saddened that the Catholic pastor or Church council would let emotional attachment to animals lead them to publically display a sign that can’t be supported by our or their theology.

I can’t believe I’m eating Cinnamon Toast Crunch right now; this stuff goes against my healthy eating, but I really had a craving for something sweet. Anyhow, nice lean meats from a reputable source are great for the body and an essential form of protein. You don’t have to shun meat in order to favor proper animal treatment.
I used to love Cinnamon Toast Crunch!!!
And,no,you don’t have to shun meat in order to favor proper animal treatment.
And thank you very much for your support!👍

Bingo! - that is exactly what the Pope talks about when he mentions the trappings of materialism and secularism.

Jesus saith to him: If thou wilt be perfect, go sell what thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come follow me.

[2444](javascript:openWindow(‘cr/2444.htm’)😉 “The Church’s love for the poor . . . is a part of her constant tradition.” This love is inspired by the Gospel of the Beatitudes, of the poverty of Jesus, and of his concern for the poor.235 Love for the poor is even one of the motives for the duty of working so as to "be able to give to those in need."236 It extends not only to material poverty but also to the many forms of cultural and religious poverty.237
[2445](javascript:openWindow(‘cr/2445.htm’)😉 Love for the poor is incompatible with immoderate love of riches or their selfish use:

Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you. Your riches have rotted and your garments are moth-eaten. Your gold and silver have rusted, and their rust will be evidence against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up treasure for the last days. Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, cry out; and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. You have lived on the earth in luxury and in pleasure; you have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter. You have condemned, you have killed the righteous man; he does not resist you.238 [2446](javascript:openWindow(‘cr/2446.htm’)😉 St. John Chrysostom vigorously recalls this: "Not to enable the poor to share in our goods is to steal from them and deprive them of life. The goods we possess are not ours, but theirs."239 “The demands of justice must be satisfied first of all; that which is already due in justice is not to be offered as a gift of charity”:240

When we attend to the needs of those in want, we give them what is theirs, not ours. More than performing works of mercy, we are paying a debt of justice.241

No - you can still keep the cats. Feed them table scraps. Don’t send them fro grooming or nail clipping or training or etc…

It’s interesting how several issues all tie in together, except we fail to see the forest for the trees…

Matthew 19
20The young man said to Him, “All these things I have kept; what am I still lacking?”

21Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be complete, go and sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”

22But when the young man heard this statement, he went away grieving; for he was one who owned much property.

23And Jesus said to His disciples, "Truly I say to you, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.

24"Again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."

25When the disciples heard this, they were very astonished and said, “Then who can be saved?”

26And looking at them Jesus said to them, “With people this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

I’m not sure about obscenely rich. But, I do know that people have an obscene attachment to their worldly possessions. How many packrats do you know? With an old playstation collecting dust because they have an x-box.But,they don’t want to give up the playstation because it’s still good. Why not donate that to the poor?and countless other examples I am sure you can think of yourself?

I’m not going to neglect my dog for the sake of the poor. But, I am willing to donate things I don’t need anymore;i.e.,clothing, appliances, even time at the SVdP.Charity extends to all realms of our Christian walk.
To be pro-life is more than about babies. It is about ALL life.Animals included.
Stop staring at one tree.Turn and see all the other trees that make up the forest!!!

ASPCA Arrests Bronx Man for Cruelty to St. Bernard Mix

PreciousOn November 20, ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement agents arrested Bronx resident Cedric Flemming for neglecting his seven-year-old female dog, Precious. Flemming, 28, was charged with one count of misdemeanor animal cruelty, punishable by up to one year in jail and a $2,000 fine.

Back in October, when responding to a complaint, ASPCA Special Agent John De La Torre discovered Precious, an emaciated St. Bernard mix, about ten blocks north of Yankee Stadium. Agent De La Torre seized the dog and brought her to the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital, where she was treated for starvation and neglect. Under the care of our veterinarians, Precious’s gaunt 65-pound frame soon bulked up by 45 percent—after just one month at the ASPCA, she weighed in at a healthy 94 pounds. “When she first came in, Precious looked like a walking skeleton,” remembers Trish McMillan, ASPCA Senior Manager, Animal Behavior. “She’s now looking a million times better. You wouldn’t believe she’s the same dog!”
