Animal Sacrifice in the Bible

I was listening to a talk by Scott Hahn on Hebrews. He mentioned - but did not give any references - that animal sacrifice was not required by God prior to the golden calf incident in the wilderness.

Is there any scriptures to support this ? I seemed to get the impression that he was saying that some priests did sacrifice animals before this incident. If so is there a reference or a reason.

Animal sacrifices to God go back to the story of Cain and Abel (Genesis 4). Noah also made animal sacrifices (Genesis 20). As did Abraham (Genesis 22).

As far as it being “required,” well I’m not sure. Remember that it was after the golden calf that the Law was given so it could just be a coincidence. Abraham already made sacrifices so it could have just been required for everyone at that time.
 
The book of Leviticus talks about the offerings that the God of the Old Testament required and is a precedent of the Eucharist. God required animal sacrifice as well as a grain offering made of flour and oil which was not to contain yeast.
