Melanie01:
Animals have a type of soul as they are animated by Gods love. However, they being not endowed with reason are different to Mankind.

I have dearly loved my pets and believe that there is a returning to the Divine Goodness how and wherefore I do not know but God is Merciful and Good if only we have Faith in His Wisdom.
Well stated Melanie01!..Barb:)

Even though animals have material souls and not spiritual souls and so are not immortal, it is possible that God could reassemble their bodies on the Last Day…

However, whether he will or not is another issue.

St. Thomas Aquinas and the Scholastics believed they would not:

newadvent.org/summa/509100.htm

However, as you can see…some of their theories were perhaps a little quaint…believing in Four Elements of Earth, Water, Air, and Fire…thinking the Sun revolves around the earth and would stop moving at the end of time…nowadays we have a more holistic view of creation…perhaps there will be animals…perhaps not…
Thank you for the encouraging and enlightened words, Battedy!

I know that Church Theology including St. Thomas state that animals do not go to Heaven - but “all things are possible to God” and God is limited by nothing whatsoever and hence tho I realize what The Church has to say on the subject…my hope is in God.

Comforting Post Battedy! Thank you…Barb

There will be plants and animals in the new creation:

**Catechism of the Catholic Church

THE HOPE OF THE NEW HEAVEN AND THE NEW EARTH

1042** At the end of time, the Kingdom of God will come in its fullness. After the universal judgment, the righteous will reign for ever with Christ, glorified in body and soul. The universe itself will be renewed:
The Church . . . will receive her perfection only in the glory of heaven, when will come the time of the renewal of all things. At that time, together with the human race, the universe itself, which is so closely related to man and which attains its destiny through him, will be perfectly re-established in Christ.
**1043 ** Sacred Scripture calls this mysterious renewal, which will transform humanity and the world, “new heavens and a new earth.” It will be the definitive realization of God’s plan to bring under a single head “all things in [Christ], things in heaven and things on earth.”

1044 In this new universe, the heavenly Jerusalem, God will have his dwelling among men. “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain any more, for the former things have passed away.”

1045 For man, this consummation will be the final realization of the unity of the human race, which God willed from creation and of which the pilgrim Church has been “in the nature of sacrament.” Those who are united with Christ will form the community of the redeemed, “the holy city” of God, “the Bride, the wife of the Lamb.” She will not be wounded any longer by sin, stains, self-love, that destroy or wound the earthly community. The beatific vision, in which God opens himself in an inexhaustible way to the elect, will be the ever-flowing well-spring of happiness, peace, and mutual communion.

**1046 ** For the cosmos, Revelation affirms the profound common destiny of the material world and man:
For **the creation ** waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God . . . in hope because the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay. . . . We know that the whole creation has been groaning in travail together until now; and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.
**1047 ** The visible universe, then, is itself destined to be transformed, "so that the world itself, restored to its original state, facing no further obstacles, should be at the service of the just," sharing their glorification in the risen Jesus Christ.
The original state of the universe included immortal plants and animals, and so will the restored creation.

God doesn’t have to “reassemble” anything. The past, present, and future is in the now of God. An animal that was alive five thousand years ago is still alive in the now of God. All God has to do is to restore the animal living in the now of God to the immortal condition that animals had before the Fall.

Wouldn’t that also imply that Satan and Hitler will be there too???

Dear friend

:clapping: Thank you !

As for the poster who asked will Hitler or satan be there too, well no satan will not share in Christ’s kindgom, his fate was sealed at the fall, but Hitler may have every possibility of being there if he repented.

God Bless you and much love and peace to you.

Of course Hitler will be resurrected and his soul will be reunited with his body but they will be in a different place for eternity I suspect. satan does not have a physical body.

I was going to say the exact same thing, but it looks like matt already beat me to it.

As I have 2 fine family dogs it would be very nice if my whole family makes it to heaven to enjoy these pets company in eternity with my family.
But I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what God has planned.

Thank you **Matt16_18 **for the quotations from the Catholic Catechism which were totally enlightening and affirming on the point of the WHOLE of the universe and creation.

As for Hitler and also Judas and two well know ‘grave sinners’ I certainly hope that both and all great sinners prior to death whisper “Oh God I am sorry!” and will eventually, after keeping company with me in Purgatory for a while, will enter Heaven with me! Who is so great a repentant sinner, even at the precise moment before death repentant, that God exempts them from His Mercy.

Satan and its angels will undoubtedly be in Hell since they chose it. Nevertheless the Final Days are shrouded in the Mystery of God.

Hey good Post, Matt16_18, and interesting issues raised from this topic in your Post.🙂

Montie Claunch:
Will Animals be resurected at the second coming or will it just be humans? Thanks and God bless.
I hope animals are included. This past Sunday was the one year anniversary of the loss of my pet (he had cancer) and he was my guardian angel during the worst time of my life. I know that the Catholic Church does not preach or endorse animals in Heaven (heard it when I was in 5th grade and have heard it other times since), but when I pray my Rosary, I also pray to see my deceased pets, as well as my living pets, in Heaven. I do not have a strong theological position on this at all. It is just something I believe; that God, in his infinite goodness, will do for us.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church is truly a great gift. Thanks for the kind words for merely cutting and pasting from the CCC.

Why strive for Purgatory - why not seek to go straight to heaven as a great saint? With God, all things are possible! Have you ever asked God to make you a great saint? 😉

Sometimes I imagine that God is patiently waiting for all of us to ask him for the grace necessary to great saints - that he eagerly desires to give this gift to anyone who would ask for it, but he is also sad that so few are interested in asking for what he most wants to give. I imagine that God gets a little bored by all the prayers asking for physical health and finances - “Why are you asking for such fleeting things? Think BIG. I am God, I am generous beyond your wildest dreams”. 🙂

I like to remember what my Irish grandmother told me when I was a very little girl: “whatever you need in heaven to make you happy, you will have in heaven.” I like to think I will see my special dogs again.

Hi to you Matt16_18 and joyous Christmas to you and every blessing in 2006:) …I enjoy your Posts immensely.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church is truly a great gift. Thanks for the kind words for merely cutting and pasting from the CCC.
Yes I agree with you that the Catechism is a truly great gift as is the once Cardinal Ratzinger - now Pope. As soon as the CCC became available in book form (I did not then know a thing about computers) I bought one - but oh the Index was a headache as I found it not sufficiently extensive. Great joy when finding the seach engine for the Catechism once I became familiar with the internet after acquiring a computer for my studies. My book copy here is well and truly worn from extensive consulting pre internet mainly.

I certainly do not strive for Purgatory, tho recognizing that I shall in all probability be a guest for some time and after death still with my own.

My desire to be a great saint, an ardent desire, has dogged my heals since I was seven years old. I only wrote to my spiritual director a few days ago that while desiring to be a great saint, I recognize that I am not made of the stuffing of generally thought of re ‘great saints’ and probably very much as St. Therese insighted herself and yet she indeed became a great saint! Hence I retain hope…St Therese and my patron saint is another wondrous gift to The Church and I hail The Church for canonizing her for her message is for the souls of the little and her witness that through the very ordinary and even mundane calls or duties of one’s state one can attain sanctity not intrinsically because of the ordinary and mundane but one’s attitude and perspective re such matters…this concept is proven in the person of St. Therese of Lisieux for one.

“All things are possible to God” and I’ve told The Lord on a few occasions that if He would like to prove the truth of that statement to its depths, then make me a great saint!!!😃 …for then all would truly see that absolutely everything without exemption is indeed possible to God…even to make great sinners great saints. Not only this by making this great sinner a great saint, why then He can reveal just how extensive His Mercy and Loving Mercy is in reality…how else can He witness to humanity about this!

And so you see, I think VERY BIG INDEED!😃

…but then there are some incredibly beautiful words in The Mass which touch me very deeply every time I hear them “whose Faith is known only to Thee”…

Happy Christmas Matt…regards - Barb

There is a true story dealing with repentant sinners. A very athletic and active man had injured himself in such a way that he became paralyzed from the waist down. From that point on in his life he was bound to a wheel chair. Eventually he could take no more so he wheeled himself off the edge of a bridge that passed over a certain river and died upon impact with some rocks. His mother was horrified that he had comitted suicide and feared the worst (hell of course) so she went to seek council with a certain Bishop. God had gifted him with some knowledge about what really happened to her son that day and from that he was able to give her these very reassuring words

“Between the bridge and the river he repented and was saved”

Our bodies will be reunited with our souls. As animals’ souls die when the animals die there are no souls for them to be reunited with. Animals and plants will not be in Heaven.
Actually, I can quite accept this view, Thistle, ie, that those animals (even the good and faithful pets and servants to their human masters) will not share in the supernatural life of the Beatific Vision. BUT…isn’t it possible that there will be new ones? “A new Heaven and a new Earth” and all of that? I’m not saying that there will CERTAINLY be any, but MIGHT there not be?

Br. Rich SFO:
It would however be possible that God would create at the end of time new plants and animals for Heaven.
You beat me to it, Br. Rich, that’s what I wondered.

Anything is possible for God but remember he created humans to join him in Heaven (assuming we accept his love), not humans and animals. Whether you take Genesis literally or symbolically there is no mention of animals being created to join God in Heaven or he would also have given them immortal souls.

Interesting. I’m inclined to believe that Heaven is the presence of Jesus (the Triune God being the Beatific Vision, seeing God in the Face, as He is), so really He’s all we’ll need to be happy. But then again, we’ve no idea what it will be like, ie “eye hath not seen,” etc.

I became interested in becoming a Catholic in my teens but when I was 25 and took Catholic lessons I found out that the Church teaches animals don’t have immortal souls & don’t go to Heaven so I backed out as I had grown up believeing that animals went to Heaven and had always looked forward to seeing all my beloved companion animals again. When I told the ladies at the rosary group which I belonged to that I never knew that teaching, they laughed at me & made fun of me (one even told me I was nuts). So then I turned away from the Church & from God, and now at 39 I remain unbaptized, and as long as the Church has that diabolical teaching I will remain so! I just hope & pray God has more sense & compassion than those people! But I seriously have my doubts!

Totally Disillusioned
