Anime & Manga for Catholic teen

Hello! So, I’ve been wondering about a certain show called Hellsing. I looked it up and found that it was rated R for violence and profanity. This is a red flag (obviously) but it doesn’t tell me enough about the show to see if I’m willing to just go ahead and watch it for the story. I’d like to prevent mental scarring, however (haha) so if you’ve seen the show, would you mind telling me about it? Is it good overall? Do the characters have good morals? Does it make fun of Catholicism in any way/s? Does the language seem excessive) Also: are there any torture scenes and/or do we actually see people being violently killed?

I really have no idea of what to expect with this show, and I’m sorry for bombarding you all with so many questions!
(One last question, though: if there is any sex I’d like to know about that, too!)

Now, on a brighter subject: does anyone have any good manga or anime they’d like to share? Something a 12-13 year old could watch with me (my little sis likes anime, too

and I’m running out of ideas for her. She’s not really a romantic and wouldn’t watch anything that’s very child-oriented (but I wouldn’t have her watch Bleach or Fullmetal Alchemist yet, either).

Nosatsu Junkie (14+)(no, it’s not about drug addicts

Alice in the Country of Hearts (14)
Barajou no Kiss (14+)
Card Captor Sakura (12+, maybe? Haven’t read it myself but heard it’s good for younglings)
Ouran High School Host Club (13+ has two bros who act gay, but really aren’t. It’s just for laughs, but I’m warning you anyway.)
Fruits Basket (12~13+ one of my favorites ever

Clannad (16+ for mild suggestive themes, but mostly for its deep message. Younger audience may not fully understand.)
Faster Than a Kiss (14+ it’s a teacher/student relationship, but quite appropriate (means there’s no sex). They have to keep their relationship a secret and I wouldn’t encourage this kind of relationship in real life but it’s manga and there are no rules here).

Anime::
Action/Shounen:
The Devil is a Part-Timer! (15+ hilarious, a fictional ‘Satan’ comes to earth from a strange planet and starts working at a “MgRonald’s” to pay for his apartment bills. Has mild suggestive themes, but I loved it).
Sword Art Online (14+)
Free! Iwatobi Swim Club (15+ watch for the characters and their stories.)
Fairy Tail
Pandora Hearts (14+ expect a bit of gore and a few slightly disturbing images, but it’s fun and another favorite).

Romance/Shoujo:
Say I Love You (13+ DO NOT READ THE MANGA unless you are much older than 13. Has a sexual scene in it that took me by surprise. I was disappointed and quit reading it

but that’s not in the anime, so it’s ok.)
Clannad
The Rose of Versailles (11+ but it’s sad :,(
Fruits Basket

I chose Catholic Answers forums for honest, kind feedback instead of going to a regular anime forum where they may not share similar morals. Please be polite in all of your replies!

I never got around to watching Hellsing but I do have a list of Anime you may be interested in.

Monthly Girl’s Nozaki-Kun (romance comedy)
Locodol (super cute anime)
Tonari No Seki-Kun: Master of Killing Time (slice of life, comedy)
Polar Bear Cafe (Cute anime, slice of life comedy)
Chi’s Sweet Home - Chi’s New Address (it’s targeted @ kids but my husband and I enjoyed it)
Nichijou (slice of life, there are guns but it’s very cartoony…I don’t recall any blood)
Log Horizon (it’s kind of like sword art online. it’s about an MMO so there are fights in there but nothing horrible to my memory)
Magi (There is blood but I don’t think it was any worse then Fairy Tail)
Hunter X Hunter (…might be borderline violent from what you were describing…?? but super amazing show)
Sailor Moon Crystal (remake of the original series…suppose to follow the manga this time…)
Then of course there’s the Studio Ghibli movies

‘Kids on the Slope’ is a great one! It’s basically a slice of life (that takes place in the 60’s) about highschool kids who get together to play jazz music. It’s got a great soundtrack by Yoko Kanno so that’s always a plus

A cool thing about it is that some of the main characters are actually Catholic :3 There are even scenes of them attending mass, veils and all

and at the end of the series…well, any Catholic I think would get a kick out of what happens at the end…

Also, it would be a sin for me not to recommend ghibli films ;3 Just about any ghibli film will do.

Another unique gem is ‘Tsuritama’. If you want a show that’ll make you smile and feel good, you can’t go wrong with this one! The plot is also really interesting. It’s about a group of friends who like to fish…but the story also revolves around aliens…Sounds weird, but it actually ends up being pretty genius!

Chihayafuru will make you fall in love with its cast and care more about an obscure Japanese card game than you ever thought possible! It’s on Crunchyroll.

I’d second the recommendation for Tsuritama. It’s a great slice of life anime with a good message and a fantastical twist that keeps things interesting. Also on Crunchyroll.

If you can handle stuff that’s really emotionally draining, Dennō Coil is an absolute masterpiece and perfect for young teens. It starts off pretty light-hearted, but near the end there’s some really tear-wrenching scenes and explorations of loss. You’ll have to import it, as it was never released in America.

Another recommendation would be ‘Haibane Renmei’. I personally haven’t finished yet, but I really liked what I saw thus far! There’s a lot of interesting themes and there’s a lot of spiritual undertones to it

Also, ‘Wolf’s Rain’. It features lots of symbolism and a really beautifully crafted plot. It can get pretty sad at times though so if you’re into that, you’ll like this one.

‘Death Note’ can be a very thought provoking experience. It really shows you what kind of a monster someone can become when given power that should only be God’s; that our corrupted humanity cannot handle such power.

‘Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit’ is a pretty amazing anime, too. The animation is gorgeous, around Ghibli good at times, and I like how unique the main character is. She’s a strong, intelligent, dignified female who is capable of gentleness. She isn’t an airhead, nor is she like a man in a woman’s body. She really breaks stereotypes

Not to mention the story. It’s pretty epic and exciting!

It does feature some eastern and new-agey spirituality, but it doesn’t overwhelm anything really so I don’t see it as much of an issue. It isn’t as bad as, say, ‘Avatar the last Airbender’.

I’ve never heard of ‘Denno Coil’ before but after googling some screenshots, I gotta say, I’m a fan of the art style! It reminds me a bit of Mamoru Hosoda’s style with a bit of Hayao Miyazaki thrown in

I’ll have to look into it more. Is there anywhere legal to stream it online with subs or do you have to buy a physical copy?

Hellsing is very anticatholic, a terrible series, I don’t recommend it.

A lot of gore, demented Catholic characters, and the main Priest character can’t kill the vampire protagonist even with a Relic from the Passion.

There is a Crusade, and an Archbishop orders the Crusaders to kill innocent bystanders instead of going after the vampires and monsters.

Free! I’ve seen it described as a fujoshi (fan of yaoi [male homosexuality]) bait show.

Fairy Tail, I’ve read that the manga has lots of fanservice (nudity, etc).

About other shows mentioned by other forums memebers:

Monthly Girl’s Nozaki-Kun, this one is from last year. I was reading about it, but didn’t liked things like the switching of gender roles, the male-looking “school prince” (a girl) that is liked by the other girls (these seem to have a crushes over her), etc.

Locodol, another of these moé and shoujo-ai (lesbian themes) series, from what I’ve read.

Nichijou, has various funny scenes. Could have been better if it didn’t showed the yaoi (homosexual) drawings one of the female characters did.

Magi, I think that one has some nudity (a blue female djinn), from what I’ve read.

Log Horizon, has a effeminate character.

Sailor Moon Crystal, as a remake, is possible that the lesbian couple of Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune is going to appear.

I suggest to search in wikis about the series, in anidb.com, (look at the “tags” tab) and tvtropes (warning, a time waster site), not only the main articles, but the “ymmv” and characters pages too.

Also, I suggest to make more descriptive content warnings of the shows you mention, when applicable.

For the younger ages (12+) I would recommend

-Kamisama Kiss (awesome show in the romance genre)
-Princess Tutu (awesome show in the fantasy genre)
-Red Data Girl
-Kimi Ni Todoke:From me to you (If you liked Say I Love You, would would like this one. It does get annoying in the second half when things seem to stall out. But I like the characters in this one better, and it was sweeter).
-Noragami (I don’t even know how to describe this one, but fun).
-The Sacred Blacksmith (fun fighting anime)

For older teens (15+) (For these read up on the themes or watch oneself before showing to younger people)
-Maid-sama (romance).
-The Irregular at magic High School (High school life/magic/fighting)
-Sword Art Online

For older more adult themes (mostly violence and gore) I would suggest
-Ghost hunt (paranormal/horror)
-Darker than Black (first season only - crime/syndicate/drama)
-Chrome Shelled Regios (post apocalyptic/fighting)

Thank you for your feedback! I won’t be watching Hellsing, then. I must say, about the show Free: I’m sorry if anyone does not agree with me, but I do not support homosexuality (doesn’t mean I hate anyone!

but the show didn’t strike me as hardcore yaoi. There are a few instances that seemed a bit suggestive if that, but overall it’s a story about friendships.
But thank you for pointing out that I should be more descriptive. I think that is a good piece of advice.

I don’t think you need to explain here that you don’t hate anyone, you are just following Catholic doctrine.

About that show, yes, is not about yaoi, but because the suggestive things, I think people describe it as a fujoshi bait show. Still, I think that said things are problematic.

Yes, I think is important to be more descriptive with content warnings, etc.

Sora no Method
This is very good with a super cool ending. It does not have any fan service or sexual stuff or violence. It’s directed by the same guy who did Kanon or Air for Key/Visual Arts. It’s very “Kanon-y”.

Kanon by the way is also a very tame series.
