Anime/Pron Question

I just Google searched Fanservice and Anime / Porn and previewed some clips of ones for sale.

It looked to me to be a form of cartoon pornography. Incest, lesbianism, and an overall theme of female cartoon girls being dominated by boys and men.

It seemed to revolve around degrading or sexually dominating extremely young cartoon girls. Almost kiddie porn.

Some were of Anime type girls being restrained and raped by monsters, robots and aliens. Man, what is up with that?
That’s hentai, the anime equiv. of porn and the majority of anime does not have that in it. It’s important to understand that hentai, like porn, is a genre. Anime has just as many genres as there are movies (action, romantic comedy, drama, etc.), and, unfortunately, porn is one of those genres. It does NOT represent the whole of anime.

Please don’t confuse it with fanservice, either. Basic fanservice, in a typical anime show that might have it now and again, are things like quick cleavage shots, a girl bending over, the guy accidentally walks into the wrong hotsprings bath while the women are bathing, etc. Usually, scenes like this end in humor, with the male characters getting beaten up our pounded by the girls for getting a peak. Often times, the girl is oblivious of the attention she’s getting and it’s mostly in the imagination of the male character that she’s seductive looking, or sometimes the girl will use it to get the boys to do what she wants (like run errands for them, be their slave, do their work), etc., before she forgives them, and this is usually meant to be comical somehow.

The clear difference between hentai and fanservice is that fanservice has it’s time and place in an episode, and it’s used sparingly or not at all, which is why they call it FAN service. They draw these types of scenes into the show because the predominantly male audience wants to see that occasionally. They put these scenes into a show to get you to laugh, get you attention if they’re losing it, and get back into the episode’s plot or story if it starts to get boring. It’s a means to an end, but not the end itself.

Hentai, on the other hand, is the end since it’s flat out porn and obviously all about the sex.

Writing about sexual depravity, as per your example, is largely unnecessary since we know what it is and don’t need it illustrated or stylistically written about. Writing about it for it’s own sake or topic is grounds for scandal and is a personal occasion of sin. The more you decide to write about it, the more your mind conforms to the topic, and the more your mind conforms to the topic, the easier it is to become depraved yourself the more you write, not for a lack of your own personal virtues or strengths, but because you’ve put yourself in a near occasion of sin, and simply dealing with this material or themes don’t promote growth away from the topic, but dependence on it’s inner workings. Eventually, you end up doing what hentai artists do- sensationalizing or glorifying these depraved acts.

They key to not letting it get this far is immediately setting a boundary. It’s preferable to set this boundary when it is still at the fanservice stage. Anything past that compromises everything the more you feel you have to stylize something in order to make it worth validly talking about or portraying.
I’m not sure if that’s true. I mean you can’t exactly show how sick a porn addict is without showing people even a glimpse of what he’s into. The same way it is with pimps, gangsters, and other denizens of society. My goal however is not to glorify these things. I simply describe them (probably a little too much in detail) but in the end, they get what’s coming to them. If you think people describing rape scenes were disturbing you should see me write fight scenes. My style involves showing just how far the deep end society is and yet in the end, I have justice prevail (and have its hammer come down in the most brutal and indiscriminate manner possible). You could say I wanna be the Light Yagami of fiction. I wanna give my readers a good look at depravity at its peak and then watch as I sorta smash into a wall until its dead.

Yup, that’s hentai all right. Not fan service.
Make no mistake though, I myself do not like the way the girls in hentai are often being dominated and brainwashed into sex objects as well as toys to be played with by tentacle-armed freaks. In fact, one of my usual scenarios in my own stories is showing a similar situation but with a huge twist. Just when you think she’s about to get violeted, BAM! In comes her knight-in-shining armor/enigmatic-bishie-wizard/tsundere-best-friend and annihilates them.

I understand what you’re saying. While it may be deemed necessary to show what these undesirables are doing, you still have to be careful, since, by your own admission, you get into too much detail. One of the reasons hentai artists, for example, become so obsessed with the genre they’ve chosen to associate themselves with, is that they become obsessed with the pursuits of the evil people in the very details themselves.

It would take a measure of Christian charity and purity, on your part, to avoid falling into this trap, by counterbalancing the evil with good. The problem with hentai is it never ends well. If what you’re saying is you prevent mortal sins (basically) from happening, then I question why you need to build up to that to begin with. Part of temptation, and the very nature of an occasion of sin, is that you’re pushing the envelope and treading on thin ice. We have to ask ourselves as artists and writers whether that’s adequate Christian modest and values or not. If you have to constantly question what you’re drawing, or it makes you uncomfortable, even for a second, then we need to reevaluate what we plan on drawing or writing about, however true to life it may be, before we continue.

We all have those inner promptings of the Holy Spirit, and we especially have to be more careful, because other people read and look at what we’re writing and drawing, and we put them at risk for occasions of sin as well.

I think the way I have my protagonists bash the bejeezus out of the lecherous bad guys could be a good counterbalance. 🤷

I’m not sure if I understood your statement here but if you’re asking why I choose to portray a certain sinful act right before I have my characters prevent it, it’s because that’s pretty much the setup of every “hero scene”. I mean how can you show Superman beating up bank robbers without first showing the audience a bank being robbed? The paradox “No hero without a villain” comes to mind. That’s pretty much how many of my stories go.

One of the things I’ve always seen in hentai (particularly of the rape/bondage sub-genre) is the way they let the bad guys get away with what they have done. I intend to turn that around. Like I said, I wanna go all Death Note when writing about the demise of these villains. I’ve already seen it done in manga called Code Breaker.

In all honesty though, I can’t really say if my work would be considered an example of Christian purity even if I did took out the sexual stuff. So far, my stories are all about one thing: justice of the right-wing variety. My characters are pretty much borderline vigilantes. :o

You see, that’s my problem. I can’t say that I want to do this out of some petty carnal want. In fact, I see my so-called “sexual frustrations” to be nothing more than the degenerated form of all the stress I’ve been having. Normally, I can easily vent such frustrations by playing addictive games and so forth and in fact, I have been able to stave off any sexual temptations entirely by merely beating something senseless on my PSP screen.

However, there is more at stake here. These temptations are not the result of any desire for material gain, pleasure etc. They involve my writing style and writing is the only thing I know I can do well. I’m no good at sports. My drawing skills are extremely limited. I am no academic role-model. All I have is my vocabulary, my knowledge of English, and a crazy imagination. I’m not sure if it would be a good idea to think that God would give me such an eccentric talent (with a deviant style) only to end up not being able to use it much.
I am going to make some inferences here, no offense, in the following paragraphs, but they are likely on target.

I haven’t read your works nor do I intend to, I can only speculate from what you have written here.

I do not know if your talent at source comes from Hell or from God. . and it can entirely come from Hell, I will note – but I do know that it will entirely be Hell’s if you continue in this state of reliance upon it, and that all it does is serve Hell if you are willing to compromise regarding sin with it.

When you say, ‘it is the only thing I can do well’, and show such attachment to this as a way of life I know that evil is involved – because frankly, if you were a multiply disabled occupant of a wheelchair who could only move his fingers to type, it would still not be the only thing you could do, or do well. Too great attachment to anything in life besides God is evil.

But he who does not give up his life for the sake of Christ shall lose it, his soul and his life.

The standard is simple – does your work create a near occasion of sin for people – or does it not? Does a normal or a normally weak person find temptation to sin, or find in the work itself sacrilege or blasphemy in it? Does this work present a standard that is of Hell rather than God and guide people to adjust and accept this standard?

If your work is sin, then your work is of Hell. And from the sound of it, you have this ‘fanservice’ which is another name for pornography in your work. This is forbidden. Period.

You are **forbidden **from creating artworks that entice to sin.

God is clear, the saints are clear – You are punished for the harm your artwork does as long as it exists. You owe reparation for all the lives you harm by its existence. Every sin we commit we owe complete reparation and additional penance for, this is God’s justice.

Even if you were to repent, go to Confession, your responsibility would be to destroy all those works, and if you had the capacity to do so, you would not be absolved until you did so or promised to do so.

Yes you have to destroy them.

Moreoever, if you are incapable of destroying them, if by some chance you later repent and somehow enter into purgatory – there is precedent that you be kept in the fires there until all the artwork you created that is still causing sin upon the earth is destroyed. This can well be till the end of the world.

From what you have said you seem like a person very likely habitually living in mortal sin and denial of the fact thereof. If you are busy playing addictive games and trying out various addictions to distract yourself, you are not living a holy life – far from it, you are living a grace deprived life, and it is no wonder you can see no way out of it – it is because you are living in sin and cannot receive the graces necessary, because you will not repent. You have to face full repentance, have to pass through that doorway.

Why not repent? Ignorance can be a cause, but the law is written in the heart and you had to overwrite it somehow in your past through sins so it does not totally excuse.

Let us not delve deeply into possible motivations… you have to come out of this. 🙂

Until your work is saintly and pure as the lily white snow, you must not proceed with it. If it causes any person to sin, it causes you to sin – and deprives you of the grace of God.

That is the road to Hell. So get out of this onto the road of Heaven.

This stuff is not your life unless you make it so. 🙂

Your life must be holy and spiritual works, for the sake of the love of God, not works devoted to the base passions.

Holy and pure spiritual works for the sake of the love of God.

‘The soul is more precious than the whole world!’

St. John Chrysostom

The passions lying hidden in the soul provide the demons with the means of arousing impassioned droughts in us. Then, fighting the intellect through these thoughts, they force it to give its assent to sin. When it has been overcome, they lead it to sin in the mind; and when this has been done they induce it, captive as it is, to commit the sin in action. Having thus desolated the soul by means of these thoughts, the demons then retreat, taking the thoughts with them, and only the specter or idol of sin remains in the intellect. Referring to this our Lord says, ‘When you see the abominable idol of desolation standing in the holy place (let him who reads understand) . . .’ (Matt. 24:15). For man’s intellect is a holy place and a temple of God in which the demons, having desolated the soul by means of impassioned thoughts, set up the idol of sin.

St. Maximos the Confessor

I’m a strong believer that God creates us for the sake of giving us a sense of meaning and purpose. How is it a sin then to be attached to your talent, to what you can do, when it can lead to the very meaning of your existence? I don’t think it’s a good idea to equate talents and abilities, which are special gifts from God, with material obsessions.

I’m afraid that would be dependent on part of the reader himself/herself. Even if I did exercise great control over the sensuality in my work, there will always be those who will make exaggerated interpretations. Take the book of Songs for example. I shudder to think what would happen if some guy like, let’s say Hugh Hefner, would read it.

I believe The Otaku and I have already elaborated the differences between fan service and outright hentai (a.k.a. pornography). As I said before, it will still be up to the reader if he/she is enticed (although, personally, I’m not sure it would be easy to fantasize when you see the peeping toms in fan service situations get brutalized).

Yes you have to destroy them.
I’ve seen people take quotes, books, movies and even the Bible itself to support many atrocities. Is it truly the fault of the authors’ then that these sins are committed just because their work influenced people in ways they did not intend? Are we then to destroy them? You decide. Don’t forget, it was when a certain German monk read a verse that anti-Catholicism was born.
Moreoever, if you are incapable of destroying them, if by some chance you later repent and somehow enter into purgatory – there is precedent that you be kept in the fires there until all the artwork you created that is still causing sin upon the earth is destroyed. Not much to say here really except if you’re going to say I’ll be in Purgatory till Judgment day and trumpet sounds… well, what the heck. Nobody knows what Purgatory is like anyways and I might as well start fantasizing that I’ll end being some grim immortal doing my time watching over the earth and such. Who knows, maybe I’ll even be commissioned to do some demon busting as payment for my supposed “crimes”… yeah… that actually sounds likely… :hmmm:

In mortal sin? Yes. (We all are in one way or another anyways)
Denial? No. One of the reasons why I hate myself so much is because I commit certain mortal sins. Also, what if I’ve been praying to God all this time for a way to break my habits… only to realize I already have a way, just not the way you’d expect? I remember a story once about a man who believed that God will save him from death. During a flood, he refused any aid. From a passing lifeboat to a rescue chopper, he refused them all saying “God will save me!”. Then he died in that flood. When his soul reached heaven, he angrily asked God why He didn’t save him. God answered, “Baka! Who do you think sent that lifeboat? That chopper?”

I’m not sure if I’ve overwritten as much as I have only tried to understand the law. I have found my motivations to be morally ambiguous at best and I have constantly meditated upon them even until now. Yet despite this, no matter how many times I’ve tried to change my perspective, I’ve always had a strong affinity for what is dark (with sensuality being just a very small part of it). Every time I try to be more on the light, I feel like I am simply running away instead of finding out why I have this affinity in the first place. It’s just not me. I just can’t simply imagine myself as an altar boy.

I want you to think about this seriously for a second. Look at the world now. Many people are using things affiliated with what I call “the Light”, yet using them in ways that I find morally questionable. Mercy is abused with regards to capital punishment (or any form of punishment whatsoever). Charity is being used to mask Communism while Generosity nowadays means you can’t refuse a lazy hippie his pot money. Look at the current New Age belief about how you are suppose to fill your life only with what is “positive” and not “negative”. This doesn’t sound very different from your view of living in purity yet why does it sound more like an invitation to live in a bubble?

If people have managed to twist such pure, innocent ideals of the Light… why can’t something similar be done the Dark? Take note, “the Dark” does not entirely mean evil but merely things that you might not consider saintly or pure. Aside from sensuality, things such as anger, indifference, stubbornness, these can be used for the good as well. Righteous anger can do wonders when delivering swift justice. Indifference can be an unyielding wall against the emotional appeals of people such as the secularists and liberals. Stubbornness can help one persevere with a cause that is being strongly opposed by society. Even sensuality can be used either to show the beauty of procreation or the horrors of sexual immorality and why it should be stopped.

These ideas are actually what I attempt to touch upon in my stories. The sensuality is merely one of things I use to portray the world as is and how simply trying to avoid the reality of it all won’t lead anywhere.
