I wouldn’t be surprised, but I think girls do more that could be mistaken for romantic feelings anyway. Guys are kind of paranoid about others perceptions, I think. Many girls have no problem with emotional closeness (not all, but lots). So while it’s definitely possible to read two girls who are very concerned about each other as “lesbian relationship!” It could also just be two straight girls who are really close best friends. Or who want to be best friends, I guess. Of course, anime exaggerates what this looks like.

Come to think of it, I’ve never seen a show with no boys in it, and have absolutely no desire to start now. They’re usually aimed at guys. 🤷
In any case, I am disgusted at this effect of the Sexual Devolution.
We live in an age where friendships and family relations are oversexualized to the point of sheer recklessness. In the case of the latter, I’m pointing at the likes of Da Capo and KissxSis!

Well they’re not exactly the most popular shows in existence (never heard to the first one, only heard of the second in passing), so they don’t represent all of anime and they shouldn’t be too hard to avoid.

What is “sheer recklessness”? That’s at least the third time I’ve seen you use that phrase.

Avoiding those shows is easy. Avoiding the annoying members of their respective fanbases is another matter.

By “sheer recklessness” I mean something which is worse than being overdone.

😃

Some of my friends only seem to like shonen fighters, and others never branch out from shojo romances. I’m the only one I know of who ever goes for seinen. It helps that I’m in high school. 😉

I watch seinen, like Ah! My Goddess. 🙂
To be fair, I do go for both shoujo and shonen. I’m just very picky about it these days because I’m not easily impressed.

LOL, I am soooo out of the loop. I had to go look all these terms up. 😊 Looks like I am mostly a shonen fan, and with some shojo and seinen thrown in there.

I just finished Kaze no Stigma anime. I generally enjoyed it, it was pretty light (though the short skirts and wind combination was kind of annoying, if you get my drift.:eek:).

Hi there! Everybody who likes anime has to looks the terms up at some point, so don’t feel bad! 🙂 Which shonen anime is your favorite? (Or anime in general, if you want- we could definitely use a conversation topic that isn’t related to yuri ;))

LOL, I got into anime via Naruto. (I still really enjoy that one, probably still my favorite), but I also liked the first several archs of Bleach (through the soul society arch).

Otherwise I enjoyed Princess Tutu anime-😊-but the themes were really cool (fairytale/literary) and nothing objectionable.

I think that happens to a lot of people. 🙂 I watched Naruto before I really got into anime, but I didn’t start looking for more until I read Fruits Basket and watched Evangelion.

Yay, someone else who’s seen it! 😃 That is definitely my favorite anime. I loved how storytelling itself was central to the second half, and the brilliant use of “fate”… And the ending… :o And the use of ballet!

I hadn’t seen too much anime when I watched it, but when I finished, I was pretty much hooked. 😃

Yuru Yuri is innocent?

Also, what is Vividred Operation? O:
Haven’t seen Yuri Yuri but Vividred is really good. OK some mild “Barbie doll” transformation nudity present  , but that can be ignored.

4 friends (who fight aliens after transforming using special devices) and one other girl, except the 5th girl helps the bad guys (aliens) because she wants her parents and home world to be restored. Still the 4 make inroads with her and she is slowly realising how much she hurts them every time she helps the alien monsters. The 4 don’t know she’s involved.

OK, it’s cliched but bitter sweet. 🙂

It’s a Strike Witches with a twist.

I think most anime use the many girls with no guys thing for fan service purposes. Remember target audience is reclusive, and maybe even repulsive, otaku who cannot get close to a girl. Here he gets insight into a group of friends who really care about each other - for the emotional aspect of the show - without a rival to steal the girls away.

I think most “yuri” anime is not yuri. It’s a Western projection I think.

I’ll try. 🙂

I do recommend Heroic Age. Why? Sci-fi and Greek mythology references collide. 🙂

Yeah, I know why those shows are creepy… So I’m not exactly sure why you guys would want to watch them, I guess. 🤷

Ah, well. To each his own.

👍

I should do fruits basket (my little sister really liked that one, and we have pretty similar tastes). I watched most of Evangelion too, and liked it until the end. Then it got really esoteric, and I must have missed too much to understand what was going on.

You didn’t misunderstand it. It just doesn’t make any sense. 😛

I don’t really like the Fruits Basket anime after reading the manga, but I did like it before then. Both versions are incredibly sweet. It’s just that the manga is sweeter. 😉
Sadly, just as there are yaoi anime, there’s also yuri anime.
Yeah, but I don’t think there’s a male equivalent of “lots of cute girls fight aliens and blush at each other suggestively, and for some reason boys don’t exist”

And even if there was, I wouldn’t watch it. It sounds boring. I guess I’m just not getting the appeal of shows with tons of lesbian subtext and no guys, especially if someone claims not to be watching them for creepy reasons. 🤷

I don’t know about that. o:

Same here. Such shows are quite boring. Then again, the yaoi, yuri and incest genres bore me to no end.

I don’t think incest has a genre yet, unless the world became much more terrible when I wasn’t looking.

I’m just saying, that’s what a lot of the shows Tenofovir is recommending sound like- lots of lesbian subtext, no spelled-out lesbianism, and all aimed at guys for fanservice purposes. I could be misunderstanding him, though.

…Aaaand we’re back on yuri, aren’t we.:doh2:

You know what’s a good show? Kino’s Journey. There is no romance, and the two main characters are a gender-ambiguous girl and a talking motorcycle. They discuss philosophy a lot and run into a bunch of city states that try and fail to solve some of the fundamental problems of humanity. No yaoi or yuri subtext. Just a character, many settings, the occasional action scene, and a lot of thought. 😛

They are made like that for otakus, in Japan.

I watch them mostly for the cute girls. 🙂

Not sexual stuff. Just big eyed, smiling, butt kicking kawaii girls. The butt kicking doesn’t always come easy though and they’re often at risk which means you start to worry about them.

And also there’s lots of explosions and emotional stuff.

I don’t think it’s creepy for me because there’s no sexual stuff or any intimate biological stuff. They don’t discuss their menstrual periods or such. They discuss their dreams and fears. It’s all family friendly. But some people do often think there is “sexual stuff” there.
It’s all incredibly innocent and that makes you want to root for these physically and emotionally fragile yet somehow strong girls. Who doesn’t want to see an underdog succeed?

I don’t like yuri anime and avoid it, but Mai Otome or Hime, are not really yuri, despite some blushing and worship of older colleagues. That’s my opinion. But I’m sure some will read yuri into it. If they do, and they get off on it, that’s their personal problem.

Vividred has some disturbing elements in that many of the adult male pilots, navy personnel and tank operators end up dying when aliens attack the military. That’s a bit of a downer, considering that maybe the alien beams could just be disabling the tanks or not even firing at them (the aliens possess impenetrable energy shields.)

It does sound kind of creepy, but it’s hard to explain why. Like innocence is becoming a commodity to be bought, sold, gazed upon, and consumed.

But I write about dystopias for fun, so my thoughts do tend to the disturbing side. 😉
