Reiterating the thank-you, this is totally what I need right now. Perfect.

As a side note, though, it’s weird watching this show and not knowing Japanese, considering that the whole plot revolves around a game that’s essentially made up of Japanese poems.

Makes me want to take up Japanese again… 😃
Yeah, this show is really getting people interested not only in learning the language, but getting the Karuta DS video game and/or printing out some Karuta cards online or buying some, lol.

日本語は楽しいです!

Any person that considers themself a dedicated anime fan I think should at least learn the Kana! 😃 It’s easy and quick to learn in a day to a week, depending on what technique, if any, a person uses. 🙂 For me, it’s really paid off, especially when trying to navigate thru the official Japanese website for a particular anime since they usually use a lot of カタカナ(Katakana).

I remembered “Japan” and the hiragana sounds by myself, then I had to look it up. I still have a loooooong way to go before it becomes useful. :o But yes, it helps that it is fun! I love the way all the characters look. 😃

Chihayafuru has successfully rinsed my brain out (only took it about seven episodes- this is probably a record :p), and it’s good enough that I’ll definitely continue watching it. Maybe not all at once, though! :o
Hey guys, has anyone followed any of the Winter season shows? If so, what have been your favorites? I only watched 4 shows and in terms of enjoyment, I guess I would rate them in this order:

Chihayafuru 2
Amnesia
(I know a lot of people disliked this show, but I’ll admit I was drawn into the mystery aspect 😛 )
**Kotoura-san
Maoyu **
I wasn’t following anything before now, but the one that I’m most interested in (other than Chihayafuru!) is Kotoura-san. I don’t have a good reason or anything, but nothing else really stands out to me.

To be honest, though, I rarely watch stuff as it comes out. I’ll most likely end up watching some more Chihayafuru and then finish up Spice and Wolf or Inuyasha. At least, I hope that’s what I do. The list of anime I need to finish is pretty long right now. :o

I thought hiragana was easier to learn than katakana. But maybe that was just because I learned hiragana first and had them all in my head when I was trying to learn katakana after that. I like the way hiragana looks more than katakana too.

Also, what shows from the Spring season have your attention? I still need to take a look myself at what’s airing this Spring (I know some already started airing, lol), but I’d be curious to hear any that may have your attention. 🙂

If u are serious, well, I think Chihayafuru is quite a cheery, loveable & feel-good series. The music, imo, is just outstanding and uplifting too! The 2nd season is still going with a new ep airing every Friday. This has easily been my favorite series (or continuation of a series) from the winter. ^___^
The shows I watched (and in some cases still watching) over the Winter season were Problem Children, GJ-bu, Oreshura, and Minami-ke. I was also following Kotoura-san and Robotics;Notes, but I’ve slacked off on both.

Anyone watching anything this Spring? I’ve watched Majestic Prince and Hataraku Maou-sama so far.

Maou-sama is a show about a demon lord (who goes by the name of Satan, but it’s definitely not the Satan we know of) who gets sent from his realm to Earth by accident, and he and one of his generals are left without their powers and must take on human life here on Earth. Maou, in particular, works at MgRonalds (lol). It’s a good show if you can get past the odd naming decisions. Maou is apparently rather good at his job at MgRonalds, too. Who would have guessed that the secret to excellent customer service is a burning desire to wipe out humanity? There’s a short preview here: youtube.com/watch?v=X55cjjQNEJg

I also want to watch Muromi-san, Severing Crime Edge, Mushibugyo, Aiura, Valvrave, and I might give season 2 of Nyaruko a try.

Same for me- I still don’t have the katakana down 100%. It’s partly that I’m just not diligent about it, though. I don’t have the patience for flash cards, so I ended up writing the sounds used in anime themes in all hiragana or katakana. It’s very very incorrect, but it does make learning them more interesting. :o

For rote memorization of what the kanji looked like, I used a game called “Slime Forest”. It’s not complete, though, because I only know what the meanings/translations are in English, not how to read them in Japanese. And I definitely wouldn’t be able to write them properly. Sigh…

Maybe I should think of it as making thousands and thousands of new friends?

I started watching Spice and Wolf this weekend.

If I say it’s the atmosphere I like, will you guys get what I’m saying?
Yes, because I saw it too, lol.😃 Since u like that show, u might like Maoyu as well since the atmosphere is the same, it deals with economics, and both the main male and female protagonists are voiced by the same ones as in Spice and Wolf. 🙂 I think I liked Spice and Wolf just slightly better than Maoyu though since I feel Holo and Lawrence’s relationship was better fleshed-out & developed than the main 2 protagonists in Maoyu’s. Of course, it’s had 2 season to do this, and Maoyu has had only 1 so far. 😃

I’ve seen previews of Attack on Titan, and it seems pretty interesting. I’ve even seen some people say that it could be the next SAO! So far, nobody has picked it up though which is disappointing. But if somebody does, I’ll prolly try to watch it. Here’s a preview if anyone’s interested:
Attack on Titan’s Preview

And MgRonalds, lol! I love that! I looked at the preview and I might give a couple eps a shot and see if it grabs my interest.

Slime forest, lol. I like the name! I’ll prolly give that game a shot, since I wouldn’t mind a fun way of learning some more Kanji.

As for learning the Kana, I actually mostly learned them using a book called Remembering the Kana. James Heisig, the author, came up with a method called “imaginative memory” in which he reassembles the kana into images that fix the sound of each particular kana to its writing. His method, imo, is quite effective and was how I learned it right away. But one must be ready to exercise their brain for a few to several hours - but I believe it is worth it in the end, as u can literally learn all of it (as well as the proper strokes for each character) in a day or 2. Seriously, it is that good and effective (but results of course vary from person to person).

If anyone’s interested, you can find his book Remembering the Kana on amazon for around $10 used. Or u might be able to find it at a library around you. You can prolly do an online search of all the libraries in your area, so u may not even need to leave your home to check for it. James Heisig also has 3 volumes (Remembering the Kanji) where he does the same thing with Kanji - not sure how effective his Kanji books are as I haven’t really used them much myself. :o

Interesting. I probably won’t have a large block of time until summer, but I’ll make a note of it.

On the up side, I can read your location! Is it cold up there? 🙂

I tried learning Japanese, but I’m not sure that I’d actually be able to do so. I’ve tried learning a bunch of different languages, and if I can’t learn Spanish after at least four years, what hope, excepting divine intervention, do I have of learning one of the most difficult languages out there? I think I’m going to continue trying for now, though. It’s just such a beautiful language, and I have to admit that the very fact that Japanese is one of the most difficult languages to learn is enticing.

P. S. I saw the first episode of The Devil Is a Part-Timer, and I have to admit I thought that it was hilarious how seriously the demons took themselves once they got stuck on Earth. I’m also interested in seeing Severing Crime Edge, Karneval, and Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet.

Severing Crime Edge is pretty good. Not to the level of “Best anime ever”, but it has started well.

I am probably going to give OreImo a try as well, but only to see if Kuroneko gets much screen time. I don’t like much of the show, but the Kyousuke x Kuroneko relationship is nice.

Let me know what Gargantia ends up looking like.

I just got another friend to watch Princess Tutu. Success! 😃

Chihayafuru continues to be excellent, though I’ve slowed down a lot in watching it. I don’t watch much shojo, but this is great.

I just realized, too- Chihayafuru is the only anime series I’ve ever watched that didn’t have fantasy or science fiction elements in it. It’s the only one that’s actually possible!

Good news for Sankarea fans: Manga is coming stateside with an English translation!

Familiar of Zero is also getting an English translation.

I plan to try both of these.

Sadly, I have to wait until this weekend to watch Severing Crime Edge and Gargantia because Crunchyroll generally makes free users wait a week for new episodes, but at least the first episode of Karneval was really good. Nai is so adorable, even if he is shockingly naive. If anyone likes gag series, Cuticle Detective Inaba has been pretty good so far, too, though that one’s already finished.

An English release of the Sankarea manga sounds pretty good, since I was not happy with the anime’s ending. Shows that are unlikely to get a second season should avoid sequel hooks, especially sequel hooks involving cliffhangers. Ah, well…

panting I finally had a chance to look more into the Spring shows, and now I have like 7 shows I’m planning on at least trying/or continuing:
**(The) Devil is a Part-Timer! (TV)
Flowers of Evil (TV)
Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet (TV)
Ginga Kikōtai Majestic Prince (TV)
(The) Severing Crime Edge (TV)
Oreimo 2
Chihayafuru 2
**
Too many shows for me though, lol. I’m gonna give the majority of them a 2-4 ep trial run and if I’m not liking what I’m seeing, I’m gonna have to drop 'em.

Also, anyone watch Awakara Under the Bridge? I just watched a couple eps a couple days ago… it was a strange show… the absurdity level, for me, is just off the charts that I can’t take this show seriously. One of the characters in the show was a big man dressed as a nun (w/a firearm) who was acting like a priest , and that pretty much made me throw in the towel on this show, among other things.

Oh, not sure if u are aware, but u can do what a lot of people do and just ask for a guest pass on the forums. 🙂 There’s a sticky thread in the anime forum of CR if interested:
48 Hour Guest Pass Thread
or…
I actually still have 2 guest passes to give away also if u or anyone wants one, lol.

Haha, glad you’re enjoying it! The 2nd season is great too! Btw, are u on Team Arata or Team Taichi? lol. I’m on Team Arata! 😃

Tell me what Flowers of evil is like, it looked pretty strange. I’m not gonna try the other shows unless somebody says they’re particularly good.

I can’t decide! I was team Arata, and then team Taichi, and then team “Chihaya plays karuta forever and is awesome”, and I think I’m on team Taichi again? But Arata hasn’t shown up much since ep 3 or 4 (I’m on ep 11 now), and I’m probably gonna change my mind again.

But I think I’ll literally be satisfied with anything, as long as Chihaya’s happy with it. 🙂

I don’t want to sound annoying or greedy, but, suko, do you still have a guest pass for Crunchyroll?

HEY! That’s cheating! 😃 lol. You can’t keep switching teams, LOL! You’re either on Team Arata, or Team Taichi… or Team Desk-kun! 😛
No, but seriously, I know what u mean about Arata not showing up as much. That’s usually one of the main reasons that those on Team Taichi usually give. Some of the arguments I’ve seen on other forums about this are pretty funny, since some people take it pretty seriously.

I’m also hoping for a Kana-chan & Desk-kun pairing! 🙂

Sent 1 to ya! Enjoy! 🙂

Sorry to be abrupt with the question but I always wondered what was the point of joining Crunchyroll? I don’t mean that in a snarky way. I mean like: do I get cooler shows or something? I wish I lived in America so I could watch subbed One Piece. Sigh.

Any recommendations for some good new shows on crunchyroll coming out? I’ve been, lets say, away from the media for a good 12-15 months so I have no idea what’s going on anime wise!

Aku no Hana has beautiful backgrounds, but the animation is strange, yes, is rotoscoping, but still could be more detailed.
